considerations for deploying artificial intelligence in mental healthcare what about what mps are borrowing the library regularly publishes details of the most frequently borrowed books as well as titles purchased specifically at mps requests impossible not to have a peek the unsung heroes of parliament behind every informed debate and policy decision is a team of expert librarians and researchers working tirelessly to ensure accuracy it was fascinating to hear how they navigate politically sensitive topics while maintaining neutrality their work ensures that mps regardless of party affiliation receive balanced evidence based information to support their arguments and policy decisions as an open access advocate i was particularly interested in understanding the library s attitude to sharing content so that a wider audience can access and reuse it beyond the mps and their staff that they so diligently serve in fact anyone can read all the research published by the library and can sign up for alerts for new published content all readers are also free to re use the information available in the library s publications with proper attribution under an open parliament licence final reflections the visit was an eye opening experience showcasing a side of parliament that lots of people don t get to see while the commons chamber might steal the spotlight it s the house of hanley chloe fielding james mcleod and amy pearson from the centre for neurodiversity and development stand with kelly hetherington from the library i approached the centre for neurodiversity and development because as a parent carer of a neurodivergent child i am passionate about raising awareness and believe that a deeper understanding of neurodiversity benefits the whole of society i attended a talk by the centre for the university s carer network and knew that colleagues at the library would find this interesting durham university staff can find out more about the carer s network here https durhamuniversity sharepoint com teams staffnetworks sitepages carers network aspx we were joined by professor debbie riby and dr mary hanley directors of the centre along with dr amy pearson dr monique botha chloe fielding and james mcleod their presentations covered a range of thought provoking topics including research methods used in the discipline school distress and attendance domestic abuse risks for neurodivergent people physical education barriers and the triple a project some of the key things that i personally took away monique botha s research about how autistic people can be dehumanised in society was really shocking chloe talked about neurodivergent school distress a term that recognises that school refusal is problematic as it negates the impact of their negative school experiences school distress she told us is still not a perfect term so it will be interesting to see if this evolves during her research as well as her research amy pearson discussed her positionality as an autistic autism researcher and how having a lived experience of autism has played a part in the development of her research methods following a blog post back in 2021 about the triple a project it was fantastic to hear about the positive impact that this project is having for children with anxiety sensory arousal and attention difficulties within the classroom environment i m looking forward to finding out how james research into physical education challenges for neurodivergent pupils progresses and seeing his phd thesis on our etheses repository the external community partners that the centre have which include local councils nhs trusts and charities demonstrate the level of impact and the importance of the research for the community amy s recent research has been able to reach more people due to the green open access versions in durham s repository read the centre s research outputs in dro the session was received positively by library staff members and the members of the centre who attended it is encouraging to know that research is being undertaken into areas of life that can really affect autistic children and adults such as school avoidance participation in physical education and adult intimate relationships i have found myself recommending this team and its research to friends outside of work and in other contexts i hope to attend more of the events and training that is offered by this team and think it was really well received by our library team naomi m an interesting look into neurodiversity opening my eyes on the areas being explored by professionals that i feel is only the tip of the iceberg rob h it was a really thought provoking and informative session as someone with lived experience of struggling to explain and gain support for a child s neurodiverse needs hearing about the work that is being done in this area was very heartening ben t thank you for inviting members of the centre for neurodiversity development to the library today to talk about our research and impact activities it was great to see so many members of your team at the session and to hear everyone being so engaged monday or the most depressing day of the year is calculated using an actual equation the formula uses many factors including w weather t time since christmas q time since the failure of new year s resolutions and na the feeling of needing to take action some have dismissed this theory as pseudoscience but clearly those people have never faced the bitter cold months of winter in the north of england on the 20th of january this year we at the bill bryson library indeed took action against this dreaded day and defended ourselves from the blues the best way we know how with books our blind date with a book initiative was simple we took one hundred fiction books of various genres from our collection wrapped them in paper and wrote nothing but the genre of the book and its first line on the front we had everything from jane austen to mind melting science fiction from 19th century short stories to feminist poetry and many texts were even recommended by our students themselves books wrapped and ready to be loved the way we see it blind dates are high risk high reward sure you might meet the love of your life your new favourite book or you might end up with a dud that you only end up getting a few pages through before giving up on the fear of the complete unknown is scary and so we gave our students just the first line each book to give them a little taste of what was to come should they pick that book up a little way of testing compatibility without throwing yourself in entirely blind and without most importantly judging a book by its cover some may argue that the most imperative line in a story is the first line you read it can hook you in or instantly put you off i asked our blog team for the first lines of books that they love and they came up with some beauties for instance i warn you that what you re starting to read is full of loose ends and unanswered questions immediately lets the reader know that they are going to be wandering through a maze when reading the body snatchers by jack finney last night i dreamt i went to manderley again is the perfect introduction into daphne de maurier s rebecca already we feel haunted by memories that aren t familiar to us yet something for everyone at our blind date with a book event all one hundred books were gone from the display and taken on their dates by the end of the day so clearly our students agree that a good first line is enough to tempt and pique interest if we ve learnt anything from this event it s of course to judge a book by its contents and not its appearance but also that no this is now available to anyone in the university community wishing to know how best to navigate the often overwhelming problems of environmental sustainability while keeping a sense of wellbeing as one of the library s environmental champions i was inspired by a conversation with members of the greenspace team to collect a number of resources which are urgently optimistic in how they deal with the problems facing the world and which explain how individuals have power to drive change in the right direction they share reasons for hope through the innovations being implemented globally the ones rarely featured in headline news to tackle issues as biodiversity loss climate change inequality co² emissions reduction and carbon capture it is hoped that this list will offer a boost to wellbeing through access to balanced information all the titles come with top recommendations but if i had to select only one for anyone struggling with the onslaught of bad climate news it would be not the end of the world by oxford data scientist hannah ritchie she takes doom and gloom headlines and news articles and with a lot of number crunching and data analysis is able to present the full real picture always one more nuanced and certainly less bleak than expected it s an empowering read the talis list links straight to a copy of the audiobook on libby this is read by ritchie herself with the added bonus of her reassuringly calm glaswegian lilt the titles are cross disciplinary but pitched at the general public and accessible to a wide audience the ability to host such a reading list on talis with direct and convenient links is a great opportunity to publicise the library s excellent range of holdings it is intended that it will be publicised further via the greenspace app
