mb the tree only the monkey can that image has been on my mind a lot recently i made the decision not to take part in the cec election hustings and i want to explain why not as a personal complaint but as part of a wider conversation we need to have about accessibility in political culture i am neurodivergent and live with adhd and long standing social anxiety which for my entire life i ve tried very hard to mask leading to burn out and a conscious choice to minimise socialising i ve also always suffered from a significant fear of public speaking this is not simple nervousness it is the kind of fear that can make your mind go blank your heart race and your thoughts feel like they have evaporated just when you need them most i have tried for years to push through it i once took a counselling skills course and had to practise in front of classmates every week i felt sick with dread i took medication herbal remedies anything that might help i still lost track of my partner s role play stories because anxiety turned all my focus inward somehow i still passed the course but my previous plan to take further courses to enable me to practice professionally was sadly ditched i knew i could never put myself through that again i have forced myself to speak at political events before at labour conference i was heavily cajoled by a fellow delegate to speak on a motion she knew i cared about deeply so i reluctantly raised my hand secretly hoping i would not be chosen when i was i wanted to curl up and die then when i did speak i froze in the middle just for a few seconds probably but to me it felt like an hour watching it back later i could see the panic on my face even though i was trying to hide it inside it felt like falling without a parachute i vowed never to speak at a conference again this is what high pressure public speaking can be like for some of us not challenging not character building genuinely overwhelming and traumatic when it goes wrong public speaking anxiety is incredibly common and even more so among people with adhd and other neurodivergent conditions yet our political processes consistently centre exactly this skill we treat confident live performance as a neutral measure of political ability but the cec is a governance body it is not a public facing role the work involves judgement strategy collaboration integrity and long term thinking it does not require slick answers under time pressure in front of an audience when hustings become the main test we risk filtering out people whose strengths show up differently reflective thinkers writers strategists people with anxiety people with speech differences people for whom english is not their first language carers who are already exhausted neurodivergent members who have spent a lifetime masking just to get through the day we would never design a process that excluded people with visible physical disabilities and call that fair yet when the barrier is anxiety or an invisible disability it is often framed as a personal weakness to overcome rather than an accessibility issue to address most people who struggle simply opt out quietly we never hear from them we just end up with a narrower type of person stepping forward and we tell ourselves that is democracy working perfectly this is not an argument for scrapping hustings altogether some people value them and some candidates thrive in that environment but accessibility means offering meaningful alternatives not treating one communication style as the gold standard of political legitimacy written questions rumours about jeremy corbyn specifically that he might be considering taking the plunge to from a new political party having accepted that he will never be reinstated as a labour mp the fact this was first reported in the telegraph led to understandable accusations of mischief making however the overwhelming response on the left and from some on the right hoping for a split labour vote was i bloody hope this is true that was my response too i m done with being ms negativity i m done with spending 99 of my political activism aimed at attacking rather than promoting and i m not alone for 5 years we had a vision to fight for it is devastating emotionally and mentally to go from that to absolutely no hope at all going round saying plague on all their houses might make us less controversial guests round the dinner table but it makes us more depressed people all that energy all that creativity all that hope gone the prospect of building slowly from within the labour party is now entirely defunct we don t have time for slow movement building and we don t have the heart for it either we are all spent from 5 years of internal warfare defending one of if not the best leader the labour party ever had the disgraceful treatment of jeremy corbyn and left wing members hasn t sparked a desire to reclaim the labour party instead it has sparked a mass exodus that is simply human nature no stirring battle cries from well paid labour socialist mps will inspire financially hard pressed socialists to part with their money to fund a party to which they no longer feel any affinity and time to spark real and lasting change is running out we would need decades to rebuild from within the party we don t have decades the climate crisis is now and it is urgent the housing crisis is now and it is urgent the national health service crisis is now and it is urgent if i believed the labour party in its current incarnation would tackle these crisis lining up to destroy our children s future i d get behind it despite my personal anger towards starmer for his sabotage of the last ge with his brexit policy u turn i d hold my nose and vote labour for the greater good that s not the case however starmer has had ample time to give us some hope instead he has used the last 21 months to either attack the left or make clear his lack of vision via a number of boring relaunches summarised by even more boring vacuous slogans why do that if you are then going to run with exciting socialist ideas for the optics maybe a case of smoke and mirrors knowing the policies are popular but the idea of socialism isn t if that s the case the man has the integrity of a romance scammer and i wouldn t trust him to enact radical socialist policies even if he suddenly claimed them for his own i do however have immense trust and respect in jeremy corbyn millions of people do he s a man of honour and integrity he s a man who is not scared of the establishment of talking truth to power and that s what our political landscape needs right now i am under no illusions that a new party headed by jeremy would suddenly surge to victory in a ge what it would do is pose a threat to a far too comfortable labour party waiting for their inevitable turn at power the tories have been in for 13 years next year and they are living on borrowed time the anger felt over starmer s remain policy which drove many lifelong labour voters either into tory arms or to not vote at all in 2019 is on the wane many will swing back to labour whoever is leader especially after the recent tory scandals which have tripped over each other in their frequency so starmer is sitting there rubbing his hands in arrogant glee knowing all he has to do is not cock up too badly and his time will come and when it does he will claim it was his purge of corbyn and the hard left that won it then it will be business as usual fuscia labour will tweak the status quo but they won t change it dramatically any positive changes they implement will be nice and easy to reverse for their tory friends when their inevitable turn comes around again this revolving door of not much changing can only be challenged by a new party and that new party has to be headed by jeremy corbyn why jeremy because he is the most unifying figure the left have because he s the most inspiring political figure for generations because he has the political weight and credibility to light that spark his age isn t an issue bernie sanders was 6 years older when he ran for president the only issue is if jeremy wants to do it obviously if he doesn t we will have to accept and respect it no one would blame him after the lies and smears he endured for the last 6 years i would however urge him to give it serious consideration those lies and smears are never going away he will never be the safe elder statesman he s too threatening a figure for that to happen so he might as well run with that anti establishment reputation displayed hyperactivity and frequent job changes after an online assessment the results pointed to a high likelihood of him having adhd intrigued i took the same test to find out what result someone without adhd would get only to be shocked when it suggested i might have adhd as well this revelation challenged my preconceived notions about adhd i had previously associated it with hyperactive little boys struggling at school yet as i delved into research my misconceptions crumbled adhd doesn t fit a single mould it s a multifaceted condition with both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms forgetfulness distractedness struggles with concentration and focus and sometimes having too much focus feeling forever restless and overwhelmed or under overstimulated a genuine phobic response towards anything boring rejection sensitive dysphoria where you feel pain and terror at the thought of criticism or perceived rejection these are just the tip of a very deep iceberg my journey of self discovery revealed the complexity of this condition particularly in adults and especially in women and girls who more commonly mask their symptoms to avoid negative judgement looking back i recognised patterns in my life that aligned with adhd symptoms organisation and planning had been lifelong challenges maintaining focus especially on complex tasks was elusive forgetfulness and distractability haunted me leading to countless misplaced items and anguish over forgotten please and thankyous appointments email and text replies or names despite knowing that person for years the tediousness of routine tasks inflicted genuine pain conversations especially small talk often left me overwhelmed and burnt out i grappled with executive functioning causing my home management to be sporadic in childhood i demonstrated classic signs of adhd like impatience and forgetfulness i d stubbornly carry all my toys upstairs despite knowing i d drop them i never learnt from my mistake impulsivity took a toll waiting for a bus was unthinkable so i d walk to the next bus stop only to miss it and be late for school this pattern combined with struggles in homework schoolwork in general and constant hobby shifts painted a vivid picture coping in the workplace was challenging due to my fear of criticism leading me to work for myself life itself felt overwhelming and i had long considered myself a flawed individual i used to say being myself was hardwork still the strength of empathy and a desire for fairness which often accompanies adhd fueled my passion for politics and we all know where that
