struggle i m not a member of your party the anxiety which the period of rival membership portals caused me and the relief i felt when i considered the possibility of not joining made my decision for me for those who are and those who like me are still on the party s periphery i think the branch formation process is going to be critical i think we should do whatever we can to make our local branch to be more like a transmission belt to whatever s going on locally and less like a hierarchical node in a structure like an organisational chart all ready for local party veterans to move in once they can swing the necessary votes i am absolutely not in favour of barring members of revolutionary socialist groups in general from yp or even the socialist workers party in particular however i am also absolutely not in favour of rerunning the socialist alliance respect left list débacle with zarah sultana in the role of george galloway and i think this is a genuine danger if we give free rein to local news comments 0 staggering revelations 24 january 2025 16 42 phil bc recently asked why the new statesman keeps hyping up the threat posed by nigel farage in the magazine since last june we ve had articles like reform isn t going anywhere reform could haunt a labour government reform is labour s problem now how dangerous is reform to labour and will reform win in your local council the latest entry in the sub genre comes courtesy of george eaton who has set out to explain why farage is turning left as if to prove his point two days later the ns published an article titled will reform supplant the tories as phil rightly comments it s one thing for the right wing press to big up reform and quite another for the centre left s magazine of choice to indulge it so what s going on his own explanation turns on the management of expectations labour are currently offering very little to the people who voted for them last july so some other appeal is needed such as the appeal of being a labour government and as such preferable to the alternative the main alternative the tories are on the ropes which is where the threat of farage comes in invoking the threat of a demon opposition is tough when the tories are bumping along the bottom but with a comparably more dynamic and more extreme threat a la reform some will stick to keir starmer and labour for fear that something even worse than the tories is in the offing i wonder reform uk certainly look scary now they ve been level pegging with the tories in the twelve opinion polls published in 2025 behind them in six polls ahead in four and tied in another two but since last june if the ns was already bigging up the threat of reform uk at the time of the election that surely can t be explained in terms of their perceived importance back then farage was polling around 11 with the tories and labour on 23 and 45 respectively moreover while the new statesman almost certainly doesn t influence many potential reform uk voters it does have an effect when it comes to defining political consensus reality those stories anticipating the threat that reform uk could pose to labour will have helped to keep the party s name in circulation helped keep it part of the political conversation and ultimately helped it get to the position where it s polling in the low 20 s whatever else they may be the people responsible for the new statesman s political coverage aren t novices and they aren t stupid they know how this kind of political media feedback loop works would they really use the threat of farage to shore up labour s waning popularity if they knew that they might just end up attracting support to farage there s a much simpler explanation which is that the new statesman are doing what they re doing for the same reasons that people generally do things because they like doing them and like the results they get in this perspective hyping up the threat of nigel farage isn t a reaction to a particular situation or need it s just what they do and how they think but why 2025 extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of hacks to explain that we need to look at a mindset held quite widely on some parts of the left i have some sympathy with it but ultimately think it s pernicious it starts from the assumption that the far right is substantial deeply rooted and important responding to demands and anxieties that the left belittles and fails to understand rather than assume we re dealing with thugs and bigots we need to understand the far right s positive appeal and the solutions it offers to its followers concerns which in fact the left also needs to address ultimately the far right needs to be defeated however it more urgently needs to be engaged with understood and learnt from if engaging with the far right in the marketplace of ideas means that in the short term they gain greater political representation both in democratic institutions and in the media that s probably better in the long run than brushing them under the carpet if anything it s a salutary reminder of the significant level of support their demands have always had and the scale of the challenge they pose as i say i have some sympathy with this point of view i ve devoted a fair amount of time to studying the far right academically and otherwise i don t think the vocabulary of fascism can be reduced to crush kill destroy and i think it s interesting and useful to distinguish one strand of the far right from another i ve also got some experience of workplaces where almost everyone was white and hardly anyone had gone to university i know what day to day unthinking racism sounds like and i strongly suspect that it s alive and well out there so i agree that far right ideas are interesting in themselves i also agree that those ideas have a definite appeal to substantial numbers of people in the words of a then senior member of ukip t here are hundreds of thousands of bigots in the united kingdom and they deserve representation where i part company with the mindset i m describing and i think with the new statesman is that i don t think the far right has anything to offer not to the left not to the political sphere not even to the people who support it at least i don t think it has anything good to offer to quote a blog post i wrote in 2016 after the assassination of jo cox racism is both a handicap a map with the wrong borders marked in and a morbid symptom of powerlessness in the last analysis racism and xenophobia and other degenerate lever pressing forms of politics are a distraction from the identification of the working class s real concerns which is also why our response to those who foment racism and lies should be so obdurate think of them as ideological plague spreaders take the far right seriously by all means but take them seriously as an enemy as spreaders of division and lies purveyors of false and destructive solutions to real problems i may not have the solutions myself what with just being some guy on the internet but i m pretty confident i know what assumptions a valid solution would start from and they aren t right wing assumptions the crucial thing about the mindset i m describing is that it lacks this basic level of confidence in the left or self confidence as part of the left without it those who hold it are left worrying away at the challenge of the far right fretfully perseverating over the question of whether there s any validity to their ideas it s worth keeping an eye on these people even though they re obviously wrong but still worth listening to even though it s obviously not the answer still shouldn t just ignore them might be useful though it s obviously not and repeat i m talking about a culture a set of shared assumptions which i believe characterises the new statesman s political output but i m also talking about people with names a key role predictably has been played by jason cowley editor of the ns from 2008 to 2024 george eaton the promoter of nigel farage s supposed left turn was recruited to the ns by cowley in 2009 and has held senior posts since 2014 including his current role of political editor we should also mention stephen bush now of the financial times who joined the ns in 2015 and was political editor from 2018 to 2022 now this blog s memory goes back a fair way and it turns out that these people have form insert wobbly dissolve or tardis sound effects to taste 2011 already dead to me to find a reference to george eaton we have to go right back to 2011 the early days of the coalition before nick clegg had even said sorry but it s an interesting one in 2011 to quote myself a big and unpredictable change was proposed and it was rejected it wasn t and informative account of the future facing labour in seats like this one at least as seen through the mindset we re looking at here unfortunately he published it while the polls in oldham west were still open and in the form of to be as charitable as possible what could easily be read as a reflection on labour s anticipated defeat the title why oldham west could be just the start of labour s worries does nothing to dispel this reading particularly as it s hard to see why winning a seat with 62 of the vote should be the start of the winner s worries i should also say that i put this to
