faith 13 july 2026 janus when people think about faith they usually apply this to a religion and how much faith they do or don t have in whatever religion in this sense faith is a very limited idea to most people faith is something that someone possesses or doesn t possess either or but faith is about more than religion and faith is at least as much about doing as it is about having nor is faith simply either or but it s a whole process something like a feedback loop a breakdown of the process of faith for the sake of further thought i m providing a specific breakdown of the process of building faith in general whatever kind the ideas described in the rest of the article are built on this basic process the process of faith we have faith in our perceptions knowledge and reason we act on our faith but our perceptions knowledge and reason are limited from faith in our perceptions knowledge and reason we take action from our actions we gain experience of reality from our experience of reality we gain knowledge from our knowledge we gain trust from our trust we gain faith but with a better understanding faith in perceptions knowledge and reason all people with active minds experience consciousness and we all receive information from our senses our sensations emotions and spirits that i m calling perceptions we also all have capacity without even trying to reason to some extent using logic to recognize patterns and extrapolate from those patterns whatever will likely happen next we also have knowledge some of it inborn and instinctive and some learned from when we ve applied our reason to our perceptions every person with an active mind processes reality this way even a little child a note about solipsism i make the assumption that everyone has faith in his perceptions knowledge and reason but there was a time long ago when i philosophically doubted even these basic things and i could only logically accept the idea of solipsism the idea that the only certain reality is one s own consciousness to the idea of solipsism i can only call bullshit as life forced me to call out my own delusions in this area solipsism is a luxury idea a faith unto itself but it s a deluded overly rationalistic faith and it doesn t hold up to real life experience try as we might to cut ourselves off from faith in reality faith in our senses faith in our memories or faith in logic when we are thirsty we will seek water when we re hungry we ll seek food and when we re cold we ll seek warmth even if we lack intellectual faith in external reality and our memories we will still actively practice faith because we can t help it even if we are so crazy that we refuse to seek water food and shelter then at the very least when we re punched in the nose or teased and rejected to no end or suffer some other grievous harm then we are going to feel hurt either physically or emotionally we will react to that hurt and we re not going to doubt these sensations we simply possess faith in these fundamentals to the very cores of our being whether these foundations are objectively provable or not we are born with at least this degree of faith faith in family and our surroundings when we are born we don t have reason only instinct and perception as babies we have instinctive faith we do whatever our instincts tell us we know how to nurse and how to cry when we re in need for instance these kinds of instincts are our only knowledge by these inborn instincts and our infant perceptions we gain life experience from what we do and from whatever we perceive happens to us from these early experiences we start building knowledge based on our actions and the actions of those around us out of this knowledge we build trust of some kind trust in a mother that she will care for us that she hasn t disappeared when we can t see her trust in how our family treats us and how we interact with our homes and environments all around us gradually a picture of life emerges from which we gain frames of reference as we grow from babies into children and from children into youth we constantly build upon this knowledge we trust our experiences for their consistency and how we apply our efforts our cognitive reason develops and we can better apply logic to more complex and nuanced situations as we gain knowledge from our experiences and a growing sense of reason we gain trust in our abilities and understandings that leads to faith in ourselves and those around us and we act on that faith more and more as we grow over time we learn how to live our lives how to behave in private with family and in public around strangers what happens inside our house or outside in nature what we can see and what we can t what to trust and what to avoid we learn to trust what we know and to doubt or question whatever falls outside of our knowledge and to actively fill the gaps in some of this knowledge by applying this experienced faith to our actions we see again and again when our faith is misplaced and when it s not and our faith grows as our knowledge and experience grow it s a reasonable faith based on experience of the world around us faith feeds knowledge and experience and knowledge and experience feed faith faith within relationships when a particular young man and young woman first meet each other romantically they know nothing about each other without thinking based on instinct and experience these two almost immediately identify each other s ethnicity social class age and temperament and they instinctively have faith in this assessment very quickly the two can tell that chemistry is flowing between them the compatibility is strong enough to engross the young couple to actively learn more they share contact information and agree to meet again over the course of several days the young couple discovers they have much in common and they enjoy each other s company as time goes on they share time with one another learn more about each other s lives and start to trust each other based on this experience and knowledge the process starts shallowly with each trying to impress the other but gradually they grow more serious and open up more and more they start to see the practical limits of their faith in each other and in themselves as they relate to the other everyone has a capacity and every personality has its limits part of building knowledge and faith is figuring out the limitations and scope of who or what we are dealing with eventually the young couple marries and has children over the course of a lifetime both of them continue to gain experience knowledge and trust which they use to build their faith in the other and upon themselves it s a process that is constantly running even if it runs more smoothly with greater knowledge and experience but faith can run the other way if the young man had learned that the young woman had been misleading him about her nature over the course of several weeks or the young woman had discovered the same about the young man then trust would be broken and their faith in the other would be broken or maybe faith would take the form of faith that the other is untrustworthy faith in science and history science and history are just two forms of collective human knowledge but i m singling out these two because they are the most commonly cited as the basis of truth or facts in the course of education about the outside world we are exposed to lessons about science and history people start off knowing nothing of these things but we gain faith in the sources of this information the institutions that present them and by how the information relates to observed reality as we gain greater knowledge and experience we see more and more of the overall picture that science and history present if we travel around the world we meet different peoples and see different lands we read books written on different subjects and in different times we experience the flow of history ourselves over the course of time if we gain sufficient perspective we see that some of this information holds up and some of it doesn t seem to fit the larger picture there are limitations to what scientists can measure or derive from the measurements there are limits to the source materials that historians have from the past oftentimes scientists and historians like to pass off academic consensus as facts or they fill in gaps through extrapolation or they simply follow political trends and scholarly fashions they tend to apply their conclusions across all of time and across all of space and they lack the imaginations to understand that beyond a certain scope they can only understand so much yet in other areas they study narrow fields that they artificially isolate from the rest of reality deliberately ignoring the larger picture overall the academics and scholars fail to consider the evidence or possibility of spiritual and material realities that exist beyond their limited resources still within the scope and context of measured data and primary sources details of history and science can definitely be verified we can retain levels of trust in careful experts or institutions that demonstrate their processes and document their sources especially if their conclusions are compatible with other verifiable sources of information we can have faith in human knowledge but only to degrees of probability and only in the limited scopes for which that knowledge can be applied faith in ideology today s ideologies are like secular religions governments and formal institutions operate with them and modern people are more likely to find more personal motivation within an organized ideology than with an organized religion people are often raised in ideologies from their childhood and they tend to take them as articles of faith but it s hard to tell how effective or ineffective these belief systems are until we can see their results and understand their scope ideologies are like human relationships in the sense that oftentimes they are just as much about the people who promote them as the package of ideas they present if the proponents are trustworthy then we can better focus on the ideas themselves if the proponents are exploiters or fools which they usually are then we learn that we can t trust their ideologies no matter how much or how little the ideas might make sense in their technical application ideologies are also like science or history or any other collective human knowledge in that we can see which ideas hold up and which ones don t especially when we disconnect the verifiable facts from the subjective notions and from the personalities involved to the extent that they work with reality and bring favorable results over the long term we can start to attach probabilities of faith in their success or failure faith in god when we are born we have no specific knowledge of god or the supernatural though as humans we are affected by what happens in our spirits and we do seem to be born with certain instincts regarding the spiritual world positively and negatively nowadays a good many people grow up with no personal experience of god and that s true even for many of those who formally belong to some organized religion many such families don t practice their faith or they do so hollowly and of course many people were raised to be completely secular and materialist and they actively shrug at the idea of a god or reject the idea entirely i can at least make rational arguments that the complexities of the universe with the interconnectedness of physics and biology with the further connections of these realities to human consciousness together with our spiritual connections all suggest the existence of a prime mover if people are honest about it certainly aristotle deduced such a force or entity if each facet of reality proceeds from another facet then ultimately there must be an eternal builder of reality itself it s harder to prove but it s a reasonable deduction to say that after looking at case after case of human experience in the present and across history that something in the supernatural universe takes a personal interest in miraculously intervening in human affairs from time to time in ways that defy reasonable odds there are also many cases where supernatural evil plainly exists defying reasonable odds again if people are honest about it for the sake of further argument i m going to call this supernatural prime mover god and i m going to suggest that god either directly or indirectly is actively involved with humanity at the personal level based on history and overall human experience if we are to gain faith in god we ought to approach this process as we would build faith in any personal relationship but how do we get to know god like we would know an individual human i suppose it s possible to experience god through his creation by experiencing nature s grandeur and studying the balances and complexities of the universe but this is like getting to know one s family by studying the products of their job performance or getting to know an artist by studying his work these studies are helpful as a start but they don t amount to a personal relationship if god is real and personal then it s logical to presume that he has given people an avenue to seek him he must interact with humanity through some kind of religious practice but which religion if any is the most correct faith in a particular religion is built like a relationship too but it s also built like faith in science and history and also faith in ideologies where does one begin i have reached my own conclusions of course but i have to admit that to an outsider the conclusions that i ve reached and which i understand to be objective truth and reality aren t quickly provable but i ll give advice anyway and try to be hon...
