ure and simple in preference to a first rate all round man and the result proved anything but happy most subsequent discussion has largely laid the blame for the defeat at the door of maclaren and the selectors incidentally tate later wrote on more than one occasion that maclaren was the finest captain he played under despite the disappointment of old trafford tate maintained his form taking eight for 145 against middlesex and eight for 28 against hampshire he was picked for a team representing the players to face the australians at harrogate he took three for 79 in an innings defeat and for the south of england to play the australians at bournemouth he took two wickets in the first innings and six for 48 in the second to bowl australia out for 91 his team still lost but perhaps it felt like a kind of personal redemption not that it repaired the damage of tate s match tate s 153 wickets for sussex that season were a new county record and the team came second in the county championship he finished the season with a total of 180 first class wickets at 15 71 despite his failure in the test he averaged 15 with the bat and scored two fifties in one match sharing a partnership of 160 in 70 minutes with ranjitsinhji for the ninth wicket against surrey by any measure it was the best season of his career yet it would only be remembered for that one match if the 1902 season was both a high point and low point for tate he was never quite the same bowler afterwards it would be easy to pin the decline solely on his disappointment about his single test match but that would be lazy and based on no evidence perhaps his last seasons simply reverted to the norm of his earlier career but it is equally possible that playing in a fractious team riven with internal issues not least the apparently waning interest of fry and ranjitsinhji and the latter s eccentric captaincy contributed to the decline fitness too could have been a factor a photograph taken by george beldam in 1905 shows that tate had gained weight since the turn of the century and at some point he acquired the nickname chubby or maybe the brighton pitches were just too flat in 1903 tate dropped away badly he took 72 wickets at 22 94 and wisden said that he was comparatively harmless compared to his form the previous year particularly in wet conditions that should again have suited him the fall continued in 1904 when he managed 51 wickets at 21 25 he played until june in the 1905 season taking just 13 wickets at an average of 46 07 and he was dropped never to return to the sussex team the committee at the time was ruthless with its long suffering bowlers he was 38 years old which was not old for one of his pace tate finished his career with 1 331 first class wickets at 21 55 having played 320 matches he also scored 2 952 runs at 9 58 and held 234 catches fred tate in 1905 image wikipedia one newspaper report suggested that sussex s recruitment of the australian dwyer and tate s own business interests lay behind his absence from the team this most likely referred to a public house in haywards heath the burrell arms which he ran in this period after using his benefit money to acquire the licence his son maurice who continued to live with his maternal grandparents was meanwhile educated at a private day school called belvedere probably funded by his grandfather and in 1906 fred received a money grant and a vote of thanks from the standing joint committee of the east sussex county council for rendering assistance to policemen at haywards heath during an attack on them by navvies outside a public house following a dispute but tate was not done with cricket having finished with sussex he moved into coaching having held several previous such engagements by 1907 he had sold the burrell arms to take up a position as a coach at oundle school it was the first of several such posts he coached at the royal engineers ground in gillingham in 1908 at highgate school and at haileybury during the first world war however he seems to have rarely coached maurice if at all nor to have influenced him too much as a cricketer perhaps as maurice largely lived with his grandfather there was little opportunity as well as coaching tate had several winter jobs including a spell before the war as clerk with the beckton gas light and coke company in essex the peripatetic nature of his life maurice once described his father as a regular rolling stone is shown by the birthplaces of his children the first three were born in brighton the next three in haywards heath then geoffrey was born in oundle in 1907 cecil in gillingham in 1908 margaret in plumstead in 1910 and muriel in london in 1913 the 1911 census records the majority of the family and tate s mother sarah living in plumstead london tate still listed as a professional cricketer and gertrude had nine children by then but only five lived with them maurice still lived with his grandparents so too did his oldest sisters doris violet and phyllis it is not certain if tate served in the military during the war there are records for a frederick william tate in the bedfordshire regiment and the royal field artillery but this could be a different man but in 1917 he was certainly in eastbourne where he played cricket against summerdown camp maurice on the other hand definitely signed up in november 1914 by then he was a professional cricketer with sussex despite having made little impression on the sport in his youth after the war he switched to pace bowling having been an off spinner and made a breakthrough by 1924 he was playing for england and went on to take 155 test wickets at 26 16 in 1926 before the manchester test match in which maurice was playing a letter that fred had written to the secretary of lancashire appeared in the press my wife and i love to see the tests as maurice is playing 24 years ago i was proud to represent my country in this very match where i missed a difficult catch which has been a daily talk ever since i sincerely hope my son and arthur carr the england captain will redeem it this week maurice tate in 1926 image wikipedia at the time of the 1921 census fred still listed himself as a professional cricketer but had added club assistant to his role a bigger curiosity was where he worked tate was employed by the national orchestral association probably the london orchestral association on archer street in piccadilly circus had he returned to his musical roots having spent his youth in the church choir of st peter s in brighton and singing in local troupes or was he working in a clerical role unfortunately no evidence survives six of his children still lived with him and gertrude so too his mother but sarah died of senility three years later at the age of 88 between 1922 and 1925 tate was employed by derbyshire as coach at the county s newly founded cricket nursery created to improve standards after a succession of terrible results in the county championship he was replaced from 1926 by the derbyshire veteran professional samuel cadman under whose coaching a series of promising players emerged who formed the heart of the derbyshire team that won the 1936 county championship but tate remained in the county he coached at trent college and at repton college but once again looked for a career away from the game and so he returned to a role as a publican in 1926 tate took over the robin hood hotel in derby but it ended badly he became seriously ill in 1927 at one point it was feared he might not recover and found that his establishment could not compete with what he later described in a 1937 letter to an acquaintance as various clubs and legions he lost what money he had after a failed investment with farrow s bank and the licence of the robin hood hotel passed to another man probably at the insistence of the brewery alarmed at the hotel s financial losses even then tate remained in derby telling the derby daily telegraph that he wanted his son cecil to qualify to play for the county and cecil a left arm spinner played four times for derbyshire in 1928 before moving to warwickshire and playing a handful of games there in this period tate faced increasing financial difficulty already in receipt of welfare payments he found himself in court in 1937 at the age of 70 accused of stealing a bottle of milk from a delivery cart he was found not guilty after witnesses established despite the testimony of a policeman that he had merely waved as the cart passed rather than steal milk later that year tate attempted to sell his cricket memorabilia the letters he sent while seeking buyers reveal that his wife gertrude was suffering from heart trouble and that he and his daughter muriel a local beauty queen had to take care of her they also said that food was scarce he received some help from george wolfe the nephew of julian cahn he also tried to use maurice s name contacts and memorabilia to make more money soon after he moved back to sussex to be closer to maurice there he coached st andrew s cricket club and enjoyed some local celebrity in an interview with the mid sussex times in 1941 tate went over his cricket career how he used to enjoy deceiving batters with a faster ball how his great gift as a bowler was surprise how he was spotted by the vicar of st peter s when he was 16 and invited to the church cricket team how he met his wife during his frequent visits to mid sussex how maclaren was the finest captain i have ever played under he also offered positive opinions of others he played with including ranjitsinhji a grand batsman rhodes the best left hand bowler tom richardson the best fast bowler and gregor mcgregor the most efficient wicket keeper he also offered the topical opinion that if only hitler had played cricket there would have been no war tate s family had fond remembrances of this period in his biography of maurice tate in 1976 gerald brodribb wrote at length about fred speaking to several of his children and grandchildren michael recalls his grandfather as an impressive and courteous old man comfortably built with a cheerful greeting for all which especially charmed the ladies he also remembers that grandpop was once persuaded to follow the beagles and by some unhappy chance jumped a ditch and landed in a manure heap the water not only caused his face to become stained with some hair treatment he was using but when he got home the whole family had literally to hose him down but as ever he soon regained his natural cheerfulness lingering over any mention of tate in these later years was that 1902 test match not least the dropped catch but there is evidence that he came to enjoy the notoriety his grandson michael told brodribb that tate was always willing to talk about what he referred to as that tragic test match and though he felt it would be a blot on his memory for ever and used to say that years after he was dead and buried the tale would go on of how fred tate lost a test match a very fair prophecy he quite enjoyed making the most of the story tate s daughter phyllis told brodribb that when tate kept the robin hood inn at derby customers used to ask about the test match she wrote my father fred would have made a fine dramatic actor he had a marvellous presence and a beautiful speaking voice he would tell the customers the tale of the test match as my mother always called it with appropriate gestures and eye wiping a really gripping saga how the ball whizzed right out of his hand and flew away when he finished more than half the customers were wiping their eyes too everybody was completely moved by it len braund his test match friend used often to come to the robin hood and the whole inquest would start again and len would say don t worry fred it was only a game when maurice was an england test cricketer he was interviewed in australia in 1929 he told the adelaide mail how the story of the manchester test was one of the favourites of mine when i was a boy small enough to sit on my father s knee more than once as he finished the story he said to me i couldn t make the winning hit for england that day but one day you must help england to win possibly nay probably that story inspired in me the desire to play cricket for england tate also told reynold s illustrated news in 1931 when i was still a toddler he used to say one day you will make up for that missed catch of mine maurice certainly did so perhaps redeeming the family name and making it easier for his father to tell the tale of the test match fred tate died on 24 february 1943 aged 75 his wisden obituary was a fair one but more than half of it was taken up with the old trafford match the cricketer obituary was shorter but more balanced offering just a sentence that he played once for england in 1902 gertrude despite her ill health lived until 1955 note the breakdown of tate s bowling figures in the first innings of the old trafford test is taken from the reconstruction by charles davis this gives tate s figures for the innings as 11 1 45 0 differing from the official return by a single run one of the spells must therefore have yielded one run less than recorded here share this share on reddit opens in new window reddit print opens in new window print share on facebook opens in new of the 1902 ashes played at old trafford was known for many years as tate s match after fred tate playing his only test tate had a poor albeit not disastrous game and was blamed in some quarters for england s defeat by three runs even at the time such a verdict was viewed as unfair and yet the test became long remembered as tate s match even today the phrase sometimes appears in cricket media it is something of an injustice to tate s memory for historians too the pull of the 1902 ashes has been far too strong to resist in tel...
