done some more thinking and i think i m settled on an ili accent for griff well as settled as i can be on the type of someone i don t even know ️ maybe he s actually ile ese intermediate with an additional qe accent who s playing esi for luls and i don t know jack shit i believe he is rather ambinal so basically not quite as extremely rational as one could expect from an esi but also still more rational than irrational kind of in the middle but closer to the former pole he seems to have elevated ni but not high enough to be a full on intuitive and his sensing especially si is too high for an intuitive the si is one thing that diverges from ili and is very normal for an esi however i m slowly coming to the conclusion that a big part of what i used to see as si in esis is probably actually their qi and that does make more sense with an ili accent his te is likely elevated as well but not enough to be a logician and his fe might actually possibly be slightly lower than the average esi his ne is higher than in your average amish esque esi ne is esi s painful function especially imo where ne converges with the openness to experience trait in the big five model of personality but it is nonetheless not very high which also supports the empirical ili whose ne despite ili being intuitive is merely 0 2 so an ili accent should not elevate esi s below 2 ne too high all this supports an ili accent this song as mentioned earlier is partly just by nature of what it is about saturated with fi and this is what i see here predominantly predictive empathy the lyrical subject leaves because of something he infers rather than anything specific that has been done undemonstrativeness and restraint of reactions preaching or other kinds of moralising is also a very fi activity to engage in as is a sense of guilt toward the other person the whole blood vs water thing is very fi as well less directly and overtly we get to see strong qi which is esi s base function alongside fi and which features very prominently throughout griff s work coupled with low ne right at the beginning of this song this combination of functions manifests as aversion to verbal and informational noise the lyrical subject does turn the radio on and fills the silence nonetheless the implied attitude to it is rather negative it s an introverted descending serious and mildly constructivist song very little ili if any at all here this of course is merely an attempt at very roughly profiling the song you don t type people based on one song well i ve done it here sometimes but not seriously and there s theoretically no big reason why an esi couldn t write an ile song ile is esi s conflictor so these are two very different people much like a writer can theoretically recently discovered a really intriguing album about which i m surprised that i didn t come across it earlier than i did same about the artist behind it alannah thornburgh is an irish multi instrumentalist primarily harpist from swinford in county mayo she comes from a very musical family with both of her parents playing instruments her father rob thornburgh is a saxophonist which is likely where her specific flavour of harping influenced by jazz and appalachian folk comes from she was taught the harp by another great mayo harpist gráinne hambly in fact her debut won her best folk instrumentalist at last year s rté folk awards and the track i m sharing today was nominated too the album in question is that debut entitled shapeshifter and released early last year it is a collection of mainly alannah s own compositions themed around the irish rural traditions of fairy folklore in particular of her native county mayo it started as a commission for the linenhall arts centre s new music in mayo series and was inspired by the fairy fort behind her grandfather s house and a conversation with him about mick na mbréag mick the liar who crossed the fairy folk from there it is also her grandfather martin nolan whom the album is dedicated to the material for it was researched with support from the arts council s next generation award she went and interviewed close to fifty people storytellers historians family friends local characters about fairy belief in rural mayo and composed a tune in response to each conversation snippets of these conversations are interwoven throughout the record the track i d like to share today from it is chasing the hare inspired by a conversation with frank mccann a storyteller from mayo who told her about a hare that was often seen near her family home and the piece is built around the shapeshifting hare of irish tradition i d known that there s a lot of tradition in ireland surrounding the hare but until discovering this album and then digging deeper into the topic for the sake of the post i knew next to nothing about the whole idea of women shapeshifting into hares known as witch hares or butter witches which were known since the late middle ages but this is fascinating stuff as all the similar things like selkies and changelings have always been for me according to folklore a woman could take the form of a hare usually to steal milk from cattle and only a black hound could kill the witch hare this would happen especially around bealtaine the irish may day festival such a witch hare would either milk the cows entirely so that no drop would be left or transfer the good properties or the profit from someone else s milk onto their own causing it to taste so bad it wouldn t be drinkable anymore and it would be impossible to make butter out of it if the hare would be caught drinking milk from a cow it would run away and shapeshift into a woman so that it couldn t be found but if a hound had already managed to bite it the woman would still be wounded and that s how you would know that she was the witch hare there are loads of stories of this happening all across ireland for instance this is a story about a witch hare in ballina in alannah s native mayo given how strongly witchcraft was being eradicated in the early modern period in other christian countries you d think the irish catholics would be doing the same but according to what i ve read for example here their attitude to the butter witches was surprisingly chill people saw no problem with going to mass on sunday believing in god and saints and simultaneously holding strong convictions about fairy folk and these witches were relatively benign and not seen as spiritually dangerous and demonic the way similar phenomena would have been perceived elsewhere in europe the protestant settlers in ireland took the thing much more seriously a big part of it would also have been the fact that back in the early modern period milk and butter were less important goods in ireland than they became in later centuries so a loss of these every may day wouldn t have been a particularly big deal for them overall there s even a story of a witch hare from connemara collected in clifden galway where a student from ballynahinch home from his studies for the priesthood in france sets out with a black hound to pursue a white hare believed to be a witch the hare is bitten by the hound then manages to go through a window into a hut and when he goes in there he finds no hare but a bleeding woman who eventually promises to change her ways and keeps true to her word alannah is accompanied on this piece by conor cunningham on clarinet and stephen doherty on bodhrán a mini socionics section alannah is an artist very new to me so i definitely don t have enough of an idea about her as a person to type her confidently so i had my socionics assistant grisha research her in our lighter mode that s for more superficial researching from this we concluded that she seems very likely intuitive and ethical judicious peripheral is a no brainer and she s got a lot of ne she seems ambiverted but we re leaning towards extraversion for wasgod goch the red waistcoat hey people gwilym bowen rhys released an album last week it s the third and last as it turns out in his series titled detholiad o hen faledi selection of old ballads which gwilym digs out from all sorts of old books and field recordings and particularly the national library of wales s digital ballad archive for many songs in this series gwilym s recording is the first ever to have been made and since gwilym is one of my faza peeps this is a big deal over here in bibielland i ve already given it a fair few listens and quite predictably have been enjoying it a lot because of the nature of the material these hen faledi albums feature arrangements that are deliberately quite minimal sparse and austere in contrast to gwilym s other albums which like to be deliciously baroquely lush which is so that other musicians who may want to sing them in the future would be able to hear the melodies clearly and then make their own recordings possibly with more flowery arrangements of these ballads i think it works well for them also because it lets the song take centre stage rather than having you swooning over all the other aspects as well lol as is often the case with me listening to his other albums haha what s cool and interesting about this one is that the instrumentation is somewhat different than on the previous two albums in this series gwilym is a very versatile multi instrumentalist so he plays a lot of the instruments himself but we also have owen williams on accordion he s from the isle of man and as far as i ve been able to find out speaks manx which is such a cool underrated language but also welsh fluently according to this interview with gwilym and katmuss on clarinet gwilym s main instrument is the guitar however on this album it s actually the viola that we get to hear more of including in the song that i m sharing today the whole album is duhhh amazing and well worth listening and re listening and re re listening to but my absolute foremost ultimate favourite beyond favourites is the song y wasgod goch the red waistcoat i ve actually heard gwilym perform this one before there is this english organic perfume brand called ffern who have a podcast coming out every month of the year all about everything that changes in nature in the given month and in 2023 they collaborated with gwilym and he recorded a song for each episode of the year suuuuch a treat and y wasgod goch was the song he did in october ffern have also uploaded these songs separately on soundcloud so it s here if you d like to have a listen to that one as well in that episode gwilym said that it s probably the scariest song that exists in the welsh tradition hence he chose it as the october song because halloween we don t do halloweens in bibielland and for people who do i feel like autumn as a whole is becoming more and more about halloween so i feel i may as well share it now hahaha i love how creepy it is not just the words and the whole premise but the tune is so delightfully creepy too both the tune and the words are traditional i didn t know much more than that about the song i m sure gwilym has shared more in the sleeve notes of the physical album but i don t have that so couldn t check it and so instead i sent my little jack digging and he found that it seems never to have been printed but has survived entirely through oral tradition its only documented source is one singer robert pierce roberts of llanddulas near abergele in conwy who lived 1889 1986 he sang this song among others in 1973 to robin gwyndaf of st fagans national museum of history since gwilym has mentioned the st fagans archive as one of the sources of the ballads for his albums that 1973 recording is almost certainly the direct ancestor of his version i was very curious whether the original tune was the same as the one gwilym sings it to but it looks like st fagans have not made that recording available online there is a very interesting piece of sound art from 2020 though created by australian sound artist colin black about captain cat the blind elderly sea captain and narrator in dylan thomas s radio play under milk wood for which colin black has reused that old recording and the piece is available on bandcamp some 20 ish minutes in the whole thing is extremely immersive and interesting actually so it was a cool discovery to make along the way and it s via that route i ve been able to listen to robert pierce roberts s rendition it has a lot of other sounds layered on it here but the tune is perfectly audible and it is essentially the same one as the one that gwilym sings though ngl at least in the sonic context of this captain cat piece the original sounds way creepier like you re legit having some sort of fever dream both the lyrics and the translation of this song are available on gwilym s website and i m also sharing the translation below right above the song itself the socionics section so i ve already written here that gwilym is an iee in my opinion haven t figured out any possible accent yet but it very quickly became clear to me that he s an iee when i was still a relative newbie to socionics so i think he s not a strongly accentuated one and i also wrote there that i could probably write a whole analysis of why gwilym is an iee but am probably not going to do it but i thought we
