e skills would suffer if she couldn t see what s right in front of her i confess i did have my doubts about barbie when i reached adulthood i listened to the haters who said she was bad for young girls giving them weird ideas about body image then i had a daughter who understood that she was not a fashion doll and had no aspirations to look like one and she loved barbie and one day i was playing with my girl combing barbie s hair and i just thought sigh barbie is so cool then i stopped doubting her and helped her change outfits i wrote this post several years ago about things i learned with barbie read at your own risk it s all true but it s a bit different education marches on my home town was growing and moving forward as a new decade approached so they built a new high school consolidating smaller high schools throughout the county i think they built it in 58 but looking at yearbook photos i think the class of 59 must have been the first to graduate from this location they had already added a new wing to it before i started high school and now they ve moved on and rebuilt once more our old building closed down in 2020 time for more room new stuff for one thing i m sure the audio visual department looks a lot different from when i was there it was more or less a big closet and the av guys pushed equipment filled carts around to any room that needed to show film strips or movies today s students carry more advanced av equipment in their backpacks and apropos of nothing in particular the av teacher taught me how to drive the 1959 yearbook rhapsodizes about the new building this new school is a challenge to the pupils it will give them the opportunity for the very best education it provides the best physical facilities and broad program of studies and above all the inspirational atmosphere that will encourage them to strive to do their best at all times nice school if you can get it while these students were strolling through the shiny new halls about 26 000 high school and college students marched in washington d c hoping to deliver their statement to president eisenhower nearly five years have elapsed since the supreme court ruled that in the field of education separate but equal has no place but today only 800 of 2 890 biracial school districts in southern and border states have begun desegregation even on a token basis in five states there has been no desegregation in public education in the past two years the number of districts instituting new desegregation plans has shrunk to a mere handful this situation is not acceptable to the youth and the students of the united states for us the youth the question of school integration is the central moral issue of our time not only are the rights of minorities at stake american democracy itself and the supremacy of our government the very survival of the constitution are at issu e the president did not come out to greet them when they arrived at the white house though in his state of the union address he acknowledges that our schools in their capacity and in their quality they conform to no recognizable standards in some places facilities are ample in others meager that it s important to deal with this issue because our children are the most valuable possession of the nation and of the family in his address he also notes that we are making noticeable progress in the field of civil rights we are moving forward toward achievement of equality of opportunity for all people everywhere in the united states and while he didn t come out and talk to the students who marched up to his front door his deputy assistant assured them that the president was just as anxious as they are to see an america where discrimination does not exist where equality of opportunity is available to all but evidently fighting discrimination takes more than a president s commiseration in 1954 the supreme court ruled that state sanctioned school segregation was unconstitutional and it took 62 years to get the job of school desegregation done a fact that i just learned as i was writing this i m not sure if it s the fact of it or my own lack of awareness of the fact that s upsetting me more right now family matters and all of these change in the world at the end of the 1950s even if i had been able to comprehend any of them they wouldn t really have been changes for me i was one of the new things at the end of the 50s at least in my little community and i suppose that for a time i was a pretty important change as far as my parents were concerned but as fascinating as i no doubt was my folks had other things on their minds as well never mind monkeys in space escaping dalai lamas and striking steel workers at some point during that year they lost a baby that tends to focus attention on the immediate family i don t know a lot about it i remember mom telling me about it when i was pretty young young and callous enough to think oh well there are four of us kids now so things worked out but now having children of my own having seen friends and family members experience such a loss i know my parents must have been scared devastated worried about future pregnancies about mom s health i m sure it was a very tough year but thankfully mom bounced back quickly and before my next birthday my reign as only child would give way to the role of big sister radio movies and tv oh my time to lighten up a bit i think the top song on the billboard 100 the week of my first birthday mack the knife a slightly creepy number from threepenny opera about a knife wielding criminal turned into a jazzy pop tune by bobby darin creepy or not the song spent 9 weeks at the top of the charts sold 2 million copies and won a grammy for record of the year and bobby won the grammy for best new artist dick clark well known for being pretty savvy about popular music had advised darin not to record the song because the rock and roll audience would probably not be interested in a song that might be perceived as coming from an opera but evidently the murderer part was not a problem he later acknowledged his error it s ok dick even the best make mistakes pillow talk the first of three films starring rock hudson and doris day premiered on my first birthday i don t know that i ever saw any of their films but i know that for many years the mere pairing of those names was the very definition of romantic comedy the film received five academy award nominations winning best original screenplay a few other films from that year ended up being pretty memorable ben hur was quite a big deal made lots of money and ultimately won 11 academy awards a status matched only by titanic and the lord of the rings the return of the king and along with those newer films it remains on several best movies ever type of lists i m much more likely to be found watching a couple of other best ever films from that year i ll take cary grant being chased by a plane or hanging from mt rushmore any day over a chariot race north by northwest was nominated for three academy awards but lost out to both ben hur and pillow talk and some like it hot including me i ve lost track of how many times i ve seen this one and i ll watch it again six academy award nominations winning for best costume design appropriate since they dressed up jack lemmon and tony curtis pretty fetchingly as musicians in an all girl band much more of a challenge than making marilyn look good the amazing hotel in the film is supposedly in florida but it s in san diego and it s gorgeous what i m wondering right now is will florida soon be demanding this classic cross dressing film be edited to purge any reference to the state sleeping beauty disney s 16th animated film was the last fairy tale adaptation during walt s lifetime as well as the last the studio would relase till the little mermaid 30 years later it received nominations for best score soundtrack from the academy and the grammys no doubt due in part to several nods to tchaikovsky s ballet i still consider once upon a dream one of the best movie songs ever and maleficent s transformation to a dragon still very impressive the top tv shows in 59 were slightly more diverse than the previous year only 4 westerns in the top 10 shows vs 7 in 58 the other top shows included a lawyer detective show perry mason a character brought back to tv in 2020 2 dad centered family sitcoms the danny thomas show and father knows best a variety show the red skelton show a game show that is still on the price is right and a private detective show 77 sunset strip i don t know if i ever stayed up late enough to watch it but i immediately hear the finger snapping theme song as soon as i hear that title and then there s a show that was introduced in 1959 that was not even in the top 30 back then but 64 years later i d be willing to bet that most of you would remember both the title and the theme song more readily than any of the top shows it had a few different intros but here s one of them there is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man it is a dimension that is vast as space and as timeless as infinity it is the middle ground between light and shadow between science and superstition and it lies between the pit of man s fears and the summit of his knowledge this is the dimension of imagination it is an area which we call the twilight zone prior to creating the twilight zone rod serling was an established hollywood writer who was frustrated with the censorship of 1950s tv for example one of his programs featured a picture of the new york city skyline the program was sponsored by ford motors and they insisted that the skyline not include the chrysler building but some of the censorship was more serious he wrote a teleplay in 1956 and let slip that it was intended to be an allegory for the emmett till lynching when the segregationist white citizens council heard that they threatened to boycott the show s sponsor the company caved in and demanded dozens of script changes basically turning it into a story about a really weird town that s obviously totally different from any normal american community he tried again with another program and the show s sponsors chopped up the script like a room full of butchers at work on a steer serling realized the only way he could comment on modern events on tv in 1959 was to move into the world of imagination a place we all know as the twilight zone if he wasn t allowed to comment on materialism and alienation among real americans he would talk about it through an army of animated mannequins to address gambling addiction he brought a one armed bandit to life to pursue a vegas patron and he finally came close to his emmett till allegory with an episode that reveals that all we need is a little suspicion to be persuaded to destroy ourselves he closes the episode with this postscript there are weapons that are simply thoughts attitudes prejudices to be found only in the minds of men for the record prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and the thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a that makes a man a father technically speaking 002 inches long traveling in a teaspoon or so of fluid a microscopic wad containing centuries of familial history that is only half the story when it comes to the start of a new life while a woman contributes a similar volume of history she is also required to spend the better part of a year providing for the growth and upkeep of the new life sharing everything she eats drinks and breathes plus whatever spare minerals she has lying around but for the guy a little dab ll do ya job done but not really some men share themselves indiscriminately assuming or hoping that some barrier prohibits the exchange of genetic information the fusion of family matters some men spread their seed thinking only of themselves not really caring whether or not it finds fertile ground they have no interest in tending that garden some men give of themselves so that others might have children they might be in it for the money but i m sure many are glad to lend a helping hand to those in need but for the most part those are not the men we celebrate on father s day we celebrate the guys who are or were there for us the father you honor may not have been the person from whose loins you sprang you may have more than one who filled the role it s possible you found fatherly guidance when you were well past childhood your father may want to be part of your life but is blocked by circumstances or people beyond his control family can be a complex community it s a tough job fathering the part of fathering that doesn t involve your 23andme score that is it involves providing for needs big and small passing down family traditions and teaching skills such as carpentry baking bread changing a tire burping the alphabet proper fathering calls for the exercise of both wisdom and imagination and just plain exercise when surrounded by active kids and it s a lifetime commmitment having children only changes everything in your life for the rest of your life so fathers need to be ready for changing relationships with his children if he s doing the job properly they will someday reach a stage where they need explanations that go beyond because i said so tricky moments because kids are likely to remember the underlying reasons and rationale form their own conclusions have ideas of their own fathers approach childrearing in lots of different ways they have diverse skills and shortcomings and wildly varying levels of patience and understanding some are better listeners than others some are more willing to try new things give up old things or let bright shiny new things pass them by they may or may not have had a good father to help them along the way all of them make mistakes most of them are doing the best they can relationships with fathers can be challenging especially as we age and have ideas and lives of our own perhaps we become separated geographically and or ideologically but fathers who have put in the time spent that time listening and getting to know their kids can usually hold their own when it comes to changing times and situations especially when lots of love has always been part of the deal i ve always had mixed feelings about holidays that seem to have been invented by hallmark and florists but i admit i very much enjoy seeing the photos and memories folks share on social media for father s day maybe i m more sentimental about it now that like so many of my contemporaries my own father is not available for me to call today and it would have been today the da...
