11 comments sunday may 22 2011 the rupture a sign so what do you do when the highly touted much vaunted eagerly anticipated end of the world extravaganza skips this planet on its tour of the universe and you are left behind to endure more of the same old life you were hoping to escape how do you face family friends and neighbors who probably are laughing their butts off because your rapture plans ruptured how can you have faith in anything else ever again probably the same way life goes on after you learn there is no santa claus no easter bunny no tooth fairy and no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow oh sure it will be hard for a few hours or days but you get over it one hopes you will learn something valuable about yourself as a result of the rupture one also hopes you didn t do something really stupid like tell your boss what an effing moron you think he or she is just before quitting your job with a holier than thou flourish on friday afternoon look at it like this believing in the ramblings of an end times don quixote is like willingly stepping onto a huge patch of ice when wearing slick soled shoes knowing your risk of falling on your face is pretty high yet on you go sure enough you fall some of you harder than others depending upon how you ve acted in the moments leading up to your chaplinesque nose dive to be sure there will be those who will laugh at your mishap ignore them instead look around at all the hands extended toward you offering to help you get on your feet again pay attention to those who caution you to beware of the other icy patches that s carpe junior 1 on the left and tempus junior 2 on the right mama dove was very reluctant to leave the nest this morning and scolded holy hell out of me for drawing so close she fluttered in frequent episodes of what appears at first glance to be a seizure disorder related perhaps to his aspergers syndrome he has had several of these blackout seizures over the last four years but not all in a short period of time as now all his tests come back normal which is frustrating to his mother as well as to grandson frustrating and frightening he can feel these episodes coming on is helpless to control them and knows he is going to pass out his fright creates anxiety which adds to whatever mechanism is causing him to go into these seizures he does not have epilepsy so i hesitate to refer to these loss of consciousness episodes as seizures but i don t know how else to describe them his inability to control or avoid these events is a cause of great worry and sadness for us all at one point or another every one of us who know him has considered that he might be faking them for the attention we give him however that is not the case we are left to solve a puzzle none of us seem able fights house had a bet riding on him and lost when the boxer hit the mat and was counted out house decided the young man had thrown the fight confronted him with that but discovered the boxer suffers from a disorder called wolff parkinson white syndrome a heart disease in which an extra electrical circuit in the heart causes among other things tachycardia shortness of breath chest tightness or pain and fainting these are among the symptoms grandson has when his seizures come on now we have a piece to the puzzle it might not be the right piece for grandson s puzzle but in order to get to the sunday may 15 2011 junior number 2 we had a noisy windy thunderstorm blow through about an hour ago and i worried about the dove family exposed to the storm even though their nest is under the carport roof i hesitated checking on them because i learned recently that doves will abandon a nest and or hatchlings if they feel threatened or are disturbed by visitors so this will be my last photo for a few days but i just had to show everyone that junior number two is here junior number one is the slightly larger one on the right in the nest i hope they both make it to adulthood the cat i thought 39 pm 5 comments saturday may 14 2011 life goes on over the first weekend in may i startled and was startled by two mourning doves in the front bay of my carport several years ago i placed some oak trimmings with unusual growths on them there thinking i would use them in some art project or the other that never materialized i guess the doves decided the jumble of twigs and branches was prime real estate because they built a nest there in fact that s what they were doing that weekend finishing the construction that s mama dove on the nest above around twilight on monday 2 may the males sit the nest during the daylight hours the females sit at night junior 1 about a day old early tuesday morning papa flew the coop so to speak when i walked out to the jimmy which shares the bay with the doves papa dove is the flightier of the two parents always quick to flee this is papa dove early wednesday morning as i left for work this time he stayed put on thursday 5 may when papa left the nest i saw that junior 2 had been deposited today junior 1 hatched likely while mama dove was sitting the nest during the night junior 1 is using junior 2 still in egg as a headrest it has been 16 days the crow at 2 24 pm 9 comments labels doves my backyard part two when grandson was younger we held off cutting the grass until after easter and the much anticipated egg hunt this year many things conspired to keep me from cutting the grass until it was almost too late easter was later this year than it had been for many years then we had spells of unseasonably warm weather alternating with all the rain we usually receive a month earlier added to the april showers lastly of course the mower was taken for a joy ride down to maryland and forgot to come home one of the unexpected outcomes of not having a lawnmower for over a week in peak grass growing weather is that i got to see what my lawn has living in it violets for instance thousands of them i put lawn in quotes because i would hardly call the green stuff covering the dirt out there a proper lawn more like an urban meadow it is than a well manicured lawn the reel mower that was left behind when the power mower disappeared is not quite my age but is certainly in the same condition dull where we should be sharp rusted and creaky where we should be shiny with well oiled joints outdated and slow moving turns out that the two shops i knew about where lawn mowers of all ages could be repaired have gone out of business victims of the economy or the big box lawn and garden centers or of family members who didn t want to take over dad s shop when he retired i went online to try to learn how to fix push mowers and was daunted at what i found i m usually game to try my hand at anything new especially if it involves taking machines apart and the use of lots of hand tools just can t bring myself to do it this time maybe later in the fall when i usually clean my tools before putting them away for winter at zhoen s suggestion i went looking for newer models of reel mowers and found the cadillac of push mowers the momentum by fiskars tried one out at the local truevalue farm and garden shop what a wonder the wheels rotate as if the ball bearings were floating in premium motor oil no effort at all the blades whirl around the axis like smoke on the wind creating the softest fluttering sound when flying past the cutter bar unlike anything i ve ever heard more like a sigh you can adjust the wheels to a cutting height of 4 inches in half inch increments from about one inch up to the 4 inch limit however at 230 us this cadillac of push mowers is as far out of my financial reach as is its nickname sake several days after the theft i found a small shop northeast of town that sells used mowers no push mowers however only power mowers i found one that fit my budget and brought it home exactly two weeks after i lost the other one the new old mower is smaller than the one i had is not self propelled but uses gas more efficiently and is quieter than the one i lost the blade is super sharp the engine was recently cleaned with new spark plug and air filter the paint job is in good condition not that that matters to me and it mulches as well as mows it used to have a grass catching bag but that was discarded because it was mildew rotted thus lowering the sale price it is a good machine and is considered a gun then immediately thought better of the idea then considered a paint gun using sacks of bank dye then decided against all guns no matter what steve i think the thief was from maryland feeling foolish for not protecting my belongings better fresca the last time i was burgled was over 20 years ago i let down my guard almost issued an open invitation to any thief who walked or drove by this was a good remedial lesson lucy i probably needed the reminder to be more cautious though lucy terry we had built a fence around what used to be a smokehouse so that we had a safe place for our late dog buddy to stay while we were at work it is behind the carport out of sight from the alley that s where the new old mower is now stored maria i like the sounds the push mower makes and it is a good work out avus my homeowners insurance has a 1 000 deductible so that my annual premium is lower the replacement value for both items is lower than the deductible even if i buy brand new i
