representation of the architecture of the shell these first two images are pictures of venus comb shells from my shell collection you can picture venus combing her lovely long locks with seashell fronds like these murex pecten with thatcheria shell photoshop still life mid journey gave me this interpretation it is attractive with that lovely vintage comb but with a scallop atop it for a handle birth of venus has her standing on half of a bivalve clam shell so maybe venus is associated with that shell in ai knowledge a second mid journey interpretation of the prompts that was in the group of 4 images it generated prompt snowy egret mark demsteader this snowy egret interpretation is placed here to simply show what a simple prompt with an artist name might produce all i put here was snowy egret mark demsteader below find mid journey s description of his style i just wanted to see what happened when i put a dark atmosphere with drippy paint type of look to a bird portrait while not species correct as to the plumes the shape and face of the bird came out well and i do like the subdued artistic interpretation applied this bird you can see the murky part here as to using the style seems to take some inspiration from a snowy egret birds feet are at issue but it is a lovely image some time ago i posted an article called ai birds shall we fear or embrace the new algorithms of creativity this year for christmas my son dave who is quite advanced in how ai engines work and introduced me to the idea of using ai for art gave me a year of membership to mid journey what a terrific playground for me all year while some aspects of using ai may be a bit murky as to other artist style options being available in a library to apply to your own elements or creative flow it is certainly a versatile way to test out ideas quickly although artist style options may be a short cut of a kind you can visualize your image and describe it as you desire because we are all programmed by experience and things we already like it is easy to ask for style elements we know as in vintage or a grungy background victorian look or a surrealistic look ad infinitum really as a photographer i gravitated long ago to bird portraits and love to wait for the perfect pose and perfect background as best i can in the field then using photoshop or a variety of filters adjust the lighting on the bird or subject simplify the background often by simply pulling back the light so i thought that would be the first thing i d do with imagining images in mid journey first i wanted to use some of my birds and just put classic backgrounds in for the portrait but i haven t figured out yet how to use my pictures there and species accuracy seems to be an issue with ai along with correct fingers and toes on bird or beast for instance white egrets do not have chest feathers during breeding just ornamental aigrettes on the back and no head plumes while other herons have chest feathers no aigrettes and head plumes ai imagining often will have and egret like or heron like birds with all of it and in great opulence which of course is gorgeous on fantasy birds i find when the bird is quite accurate the thing that is off is the leg length of course this sort of thing does bother me so far but if i relax and go fantasy it is fine so far snowy egrets in ai seem more correct that being said the great blue heron below is pretty good though i haven t inspected closely the number of toes the great white heron has some plume issues and too short legs but love the classic look as you can see from this small selection i ve become attracted to putting egrets with girl portraits in a victorian or vintage style and that is one thing ai is marvelous at beautiful female faces i presume that ai learns by art that exists and by what users create over and over again a coded bias towards beauty from a historical art perspective i chose a couple of the more victorian looking ones of my experimention this time because they lend so well to pairing with the bird a habit that seemed common with the dutch masters and early painterly portraiture and still lifes with flowers and other natural objects i have been doing the stills too this is so addictive one good use for ai i think might be when an author imagines one of their characters they could describe their character in the prompts and have a tangible picture although could be better for the vision to stay in the author s head until the story is told and it is time to turn imagining into a book cover idea perhaps not sure how it works best with story tellers as their detail seems pretty intact in novels i look forward to getting better at this and actually having control of the result i will have to post some comparisons between what i thought and what i said but ai thought and ai said or what i asked for vs what it gave me but i am always one for serendipity prompts here were species accurate great blue heron with classic moody clouds by the sea front lit ai gave me a classic scene this is quite accurate prompts here were great white heron in a classic landscape with clouds species accurate soft landscape front lit bird not species accurate but a wonderful classic expression prompts here included girl in a pink dress with white egret vintage background with blue and gold didn t ask for the frame i like her confident expression but didn t prompt that you can prompt expression prompts here i think were again soft lighting portrait of a girl with dark hair and hazel eyes with vintage furniture and background with bird here you can see that ai has gotten much better with fingers at least pretty great here i cannot rightly remember the inspiration for this one as it is more modern fantasy looking but i remember asking for portrait of a girl with dark hair and blue eyes with egret prompts with this still life were surrealistic cloud egret antique oriental table satsuma vase prompts here included grungy background with distressed table with hourglass and egret i think that is the round glass in the old looking lamp ai gave its interpretation i find ai makes excellent and other wildlife lately it has been all about the wood storks not just because they are interesting but also because they seem to take over the nesting areas they share due to the sheer comparative size of the individuals and the wood stork colonies at wakodahatchee my old favourite spots for taking pictures of great blue herons are most definitely now the domain of the wood storks the great blue herons nest there as they have since i first stepped foot into this wonderful wetland habitat but the neighborhood has certainly shifted that is the way it always is in nature habitat changes a bit so the residents do too this great blue heron decked out in its mating plumage is fiercely focused on what swims beneath the wetland waters i was distant so both of these images are a crop the close crop is simply because i like the shadows on the eye of the heron you can probably see that if you click on the upper image it is funny what might draw me to work on one image over another and visited wakodahatchee a man made wetland in delray florida i considered the great blue heron the king of the rookery and for many years it was the largest bird i could see there in all of its magnificence but off in the distant trees was the wood stork whose comparative size was just hidden by virtue of its distance from this observer one particular year the remote areas were disturbed bringing the wood storks closer to the boardwalk and viewing platforms in the subsequent seasons i loved the novelty of having this somewhat endangered at that time species so near at hand and seeing my first wood storks with their imperious gaze nesting and the clatter of their rambunctious chicks since that time they have occupied my viewfinder many many times and remain a fascinating subject after a long absence i visited in february and found many wood storks in the process of building their platforms and some which seemed to be egg sitting already this was the first time i was able to see closer up the size of the branches they were harvesting from the surrounding trees generally you think of small twigs for nests but these are thick branches wood storks would drop down into the water under the pond apple trees and disappear into the shadows soon you d hear the sounds of a great battle in the thrusting movement of branches being ripped apart and a wood stork would soon appear quite self satisfied and wading through the waters with a large timber for its nest wood storks build nests in trees over water that provide both safety and access to fish and will break off branches from trees or harvest them from fallen dead trees you can see by the size of the branches these birds have harvested that the nests are substantial in size measuring typically in diameter about 3 3 feet or a meter or so later the nest is lined with softer material such as leaves or moss for the eggs and chicks wood storks nest in colonies and so there is usually a lot going in with the neighbors and competition for building materials wakodahatchee pond apple trees seem to be perfect for this enterprise the images below are of wood storks with their prizes this on february 25th 2024 striding beneath a pond apple cluster with its prize late day light gives a beautiful silky look to the water and the wood stork still working hard on gathering nesting supplies fishing a break in the late day possibility this is one that i deemed too dark and didn t take a second look at was taken on gray on my birthday in 2019 actually i d posted other images from that shoot and had selected mainly wood storks out of the group but that day the great blue herons were actively nesting also with chicks ranging from helpless nestlings to fledglings this bird is standing on its nest and had a couple of tiny chicks in the nest just not really showing here i ve been interested in doing a series of different kinds of bird portraits trying out various oil paint filters in photoshop to do what i can t do paint sometimes i think it is a great idea and other times forcing something into being what it is not i just like the way oil paint effects will smooth out things in such a pleasant way digital photography has a way of capturing great detail but not always favorable detail even a bird can use some flattering smoothing of harsh details at times digital has certainly not been my friend when it
