another blackout poem from the book pigs in heaven by barbara kingsolver this time page 115 and so it goes this book has been so timely in allowing me to channel my feelings about this administration challenge to write a poem in any form in response to the prompt a 78 year old woman blows out candles on the birthday cake one refuses to be blown out no matter how hard she tries it burns with a blue flame and whispers a name she hasn t heard in 40 years the poem is a conversation with the candle what does she decide to do let it burn or pinch it out it was my birthday to enjoy with a cake and 78 candles blazing but one refused to go out whispering simone in a sibilant tone mocking me shocking me into silence i remembered and kept my silence no longer able to smile or enjoy that name said in an accusatory tone as guilt and shame flamed to blazing afraid that i d be found out she d done horrible things when out but made sure that corpses stayed silenced the candle remained stubbornly evans sometimes has a hard time keeping a straight face when suspects talk crazy and i don t mean crazy scary but crazy haha the vacation ended it was back to work responding to a call we ducked under the yellow police tape and were stopped in the middle of the drive by the michelin man in black the bomb squad was removing what was believed to be the murder weapon a saucepan of bullets cooked dry t found any fish or seafood i haven t liked i introduced sparky to the joys of real crab and fresh lobster and of course shrimp to save money we used to dine on sardines on crackers yum and i d buy the cheap fish aka shark steaks but one of the dishes i really love is squid because my parents introduced me to a variety of cuisines from around the world i ve done the same for my children and by default sparky i d had a korean dish called ojingeochae bokkeum it was so tasty that i regularly make this as a treat i m fortunate that the oriental market in town carried the squid and all the required ingredients ingredients 2 t oil peanut rice bran or olive oil will work 4 t karo syrup or you can substitute half honey and half karo 2 t soy sauce 3 cloves garlic minced 2 drops fish oil 1 6 t gochujang korean chili paste i use only 1 2 t because i m a spice wimp 6 oz shredded squid 1 t sesame seeds i use the black seeds place the oil karo syrup soy sauce fish oil chili paste and garlic in a deep skillet or wok bring this to a boil stirring mix in the squid and coat it with the sauce stir and turn the squid until it is slightly translucent remove from the heat and sprinkle with the sesame seeds serve with rice i topped my rice with seto fumi furikake a rice seasoning made of sesame seeds bonito flakes tuna dried seaweed soy sauce dried egg and potato powder share this share on using the form of a catena rondo the catena rondo was created by robin skelton he took the name from catena which means chain and connected it with rondo which means circle it becomes obvious why this name was chosen when you read a catena rondo the form is composed of any number of 4 line stanzas each stanza has a rhyme of a1 b1 b a1 b1 c1 c b1 c1 d1 d c1 etc with the last stanza being identical
