critical analysis because you having that distance from it allows you to coldly analyze what you don t like what doesn t work much more so than if you like a book so with permission to be coldly analytical i was ready to express my intense dislike for this book but the more i distanced myself from it the more i realized i couldn t dismiss it i couldn t not think of it as a classic as much as it wore me out to read through it all i recognized that the florid style was completely deliberate necessary even that choosing to write in such a way about a pedophile is important to the story constantly reminds us that he is not trustworthy that this is not intended for titillation neither for sexual nor true crime psychology type thrills i also think maybe the language protects the reader a bit from what s going on creates some distance and thanks to a friendly comment on this post thanks mark i realize that i may have disliked the writing style because it was skillfully and beautifully done maybe i felt betrayed by the author couldn t bear to admire anything related to this subject matter going back through the book i started seeing lolita not just as a victim but as a survivor even if she does die in the end i came to the conclusion that it was the only way to tell this particular story i also think it could be read as being about something more than just pedophilia it could be any passion or obsession that makes us not care about anything else makes us feel justified in using people with no consideration for anything but our own desires but i won t take my musings any farther than that since nabokov says the book has no moral and that novels shouldn t be used to teach lessons why was lolita a best seller in 1958 fine i ve decided it s worth reading but why was it a best seller in october of 1958 at first i thought it had a lot to do with the fact that it had been banned for a couple of years and people were curious wanted to show they could handle it maybe they thought it would be steamy and sexy like peyton place which had also been banned in 1956 and then spent about half of 1957 at the top of the best seller list my guess is lolita had too much talk and not enough action for it to stay at the top of the list for that long i doubt if surviving a banning is enough to keep a book at the top of the best seller list for very long but i think it may possibly give it a nudge toward the classic zone a banned book is always going to have that suggestion of pizzazz lolita came to the us on the brink of the swinging 60s and folks may have been ready to give it a chance because they were increasingly open to acknowledging that sex happens and it s ok playboy hit the shelves in 1953 the kinsey reports in 1948 and 1953 offered a scholarly look at sexual behavior around the time lolita was published in the us liz taylor was lounging in her slip in cat on a hot tin roof talking as freely about homosexuality as the censors would allow elvis was getting his pelvis censored on ed sullivan but everyone knew what it was doing nabokov s nationality may have added a bit of mystique to the idea of reading lolita the cold war had been going on for more than a decade and people may have been intrigued by a russian author who had escaped not only the russian revolution but also the nazis and found safety in the usa and i found a couple of articles from 1958 that indicate americans were a bit curious about russia and its people the issue of life magazine published the day i was born has an article about an elementary school in utah offering russian language lessons and the only complaint from parents was that the class filled up too quickly for their kids to get in i also found an indiana university press article that mentions an american soviet cultural exchange agreement in 1958 which set up a student exchange for 17 soviet and 22 american graduate students and the book that knocked lolita from the number one spot on the best seller list dr zhivago by boris pasternak another book that was refused publication in the ussr they were pretty ticked off when it won the nobel prize for literature 1958 was a good time for a novel that includes a road trip tour of the usa as i mentioned in a previous post about the year i was born the building of the interstate highway system had been underway for a couple of years and motels were at their peak more than 50 000 across the country so americans were becoming familiar with this type of travel even as i was reading in full dislike and disgust mode when humbert mentioned their visits to places like scotty s castle in death valley yellowstone national park and the corn palace in south dakota i perked up and thought ooh i ve been there so that s me done with lolita will i ever read it again unlikely even on audiobook narrated by jeremy irons most definitely not will i recommend it to anyone maybe but with some pretty serious caveats am welcome to my world posted on february 17 2023 by patti i always struggle with the beginning of any piece of writing it generally takes me as long to figure out how to start something as it does to finish the rest of it introductions are challenging figuring out how best to grab attention set the tone establish expectations without trying to explain everything up front and the thing is i m never quite sure what s going to happen once i really get started because my write brain often seems to have its own agenda no matter how much i prepare for what i want to say i get surprised by my own thoughts and end up with observations and conclusions i didn t expect kind of like life we start out with plans for where we re headed generally initiated by our parents later by ourselves often with input from teachers bosses friends partners all the people who may shift our direction as we bump into them sometimes we land more or less where we expected a lot of times we wonder how we got there but wherever we land we move on from there what else are we going to do and though each human experience is distinctive around the world and throughout time we are all born under the same circumstances we have absolutely no control over when where or with whom we make our start and no ability to deliberately influence what happens to us for at least the first few years of our lives what happens to us after we re born depends on our century ancestry nationality culture along with genetics providence luck fate as well as the people who raised us before we could fend for ourselves and attempts to figure out which of those factors is the most important have shaped the world s philosophies religions scientific disciplines and political and societal structures everything we think or do seems that whole lack of control thing gives us a lot to think about anyway back to the beginning of this project me exploring my own beginnings and my journey through history something i announced in this blog over a month ago like i said introductions take me a while given that for this first bit i have nothing to share memory wise i have to start with events and circumstances shaping the world of the young couple who brought me home from the hospital first time parents my parents at 23 they d already been married four years on the young side even by 1950s standards mom just over five feet tall and about 100 pounds when she got married was introduced to childbirth with a breech presentation something that would likely be handled by a c section now but she just had to bear down and get the job done my dad who of course was not allowed in the room for the blessed event back in those days still happily told anyone who would listen that they knew i was a girl as soon as i was visible during her hospital stay mom shared a room with a young woman who also gave birth on the very same day to a boy who would be one of my classmates 6 years later he and i always made a point of wishing each other a very happy birthday when we saw each other at school on those momentous days my trip home from the hospital would have looked something like this though without the suit and hat on mom and i would have been put in a comfy crib that once i could roll around would allow me to easily fit my head through the slats clearly my generation s adventures in cars and cribs paved the way for several nifty safety measures for future babies my personal scar one health and safety concern the world health organization took on in 1958 was the announcement regarding a smallpox eradication program which was launched the next year i don t know when i received my vaccination but i ve had the scar from it for as long as i remember now i find that it s likely protecting me against monkeypox which seems like a good deal to me rather than in a hospital both my parents were born at home on the farms where their families lived both born in 1935 the year when the number of farms in the us was at its peak nearly 7 million but when they reached adulthood my parents and most of their siblings and cousins and lots of other people across the country left their farms for other occupations by 1958 the number of us farms was down to just over 4 million then down to 3 million by the end of the next decade turns out i was born into the middle of the highest level of farm consolidation and sales in us history though i never lived on one farms would have been some of the first places i visited as a brand new infant i was surrounded by them throughout childhood and high school both sets of grandparents were still on farms when i was very young it always seemed a natural and wonderful place for grandparents and great grandparents to be though my parents shared lots of happy memories about life on the farm neither of them ever talked about returning to it however when we went for sunday afternoon drives as a family we often ended up touring the farming neighborhood where my dad and everyone on both sides of his family grew up though none of them still lived there past the methodist church where they celebrated marriages and baptisms including mine and mourned the passing of loved ones drives where we heard stories about our grandparents and uncles and aunts and a bunch of people we d never met through a neighborhood where dad decided to return when it was time to spread his ashes i ve lived nearly my entire adult life in major metropolitan areas with my city boy husband but respect and appreciation for farming is part of me i have family members who are still farming some of the smartest guys i went to school with are farmers and i still think a well tended family farm is a beautiful place my parents didn t bring me home to a farm but they weren t ready for the move to town quite yet in 1958 they were renting a small cottage by one of the many lakes in the area think of this lake cottage as a place where people might have a rowboat that they use for fishing where you go swimming off the end of your pier in the summer and where foolhardy teenagers drive their cars onto the ice when they hope it s thick enough in winter rather than anything resembling a resort area in other words a fun but not fancy place to live i of course remember nothing of my first year in that house except for a couple of things my mother told me i know she nursed me for about 6 weeks before switching to the bottle and i know one day when she was walking to a friend s house to show me off she was attacked by a dog which was then bravely chased off by a collie like tv star lassie when she went to the doctor to get the bite looked at my dad passed out when they squeezed the pus and stuff out of her leg and i was very afraid of dogs as a young child i also know they figured i was the most beautiful baby in the world you can judge for yourself though i was born during a recession and the unemployment rate was climbing above 7 my dad had a job inflation was low and someone earning the average wage of 3 800 could get along just fine my mom stayed home with me so i guess we were fine as i read up on the year of my birth i came across articles and books that referred to increasing automation and our push button society along with worries that machines would put ever more people out of work i don t think these were things that my parents worried about back then they were 23 they had an income and a cute new baby besides they loved gadgets and new stuff and really how many people could possibly understand the implications of that new microchip thing that had just been invented it seems to have been mainly a convenience thing at first a way to get computers down to a size smaller than an entire room then a bunch of kids who were toddling around or being born at the time of the first microchip eventually found lots of ways to play with this new toy and just 42 years later the inventors won the nobel prize for physics and that original microchip is enormous by 1958 80 of us households had at least one car my dad drove 20 miles to work each day so i know we were among that 80 and since south dakota had become the last state to require a driver s license in 1954 i know they were licensed to drive me around even if they did bundle me up and put me on the floor of the back seat as my dad once told me they wouldn t have had a photo license in 1958 california became the first state to require photos i got my indiana driver s license in 1975 and it still had no photo it was printed on flimsy blue paper i once left it in my pocket and after it went through the washer i was left with a handful of blue pulp my dad loved to drive it was a big part of his job and it became a natural part of family entertainment in later years we would just drive around and look at stuff for many years i thought the purpose of a car horn was to greet people as you drove past i m sure dad was excited about the new project that was still in its early stages when i was born the federal highway act which president eisenhower told us would be a part of sustaining our unity as a nation the ceaseless flow of information throughout the republic is matched by individual and commercial movement over a vast system of interconnected highways crisscrossing the country adding that these united forces of communication and transportation were dynamic elements in the very name we bear united states without them we would be a mere alliance of many separate parts this new idea of being able to drive to any of our 48 states on good paved roads must have been thrilling full of possibilities especially since motels were at their peak during the late 50s with more than 50 000 of them around the country ready and waiting for tired long distance
