with the present moment grounding practices such as walking barefoot on the grass or sand focusing on your breath or connecting with the five senses can help restore a sense of calm and stability these simple mindfulness practices can help quiet mental noise reduce stress and soothe the nervous system as you become more centered you can access your inner wisdom gain clarity and recognize the guidance available to you answers often emerge when the mind and body are calm and relaxed practice acceptance accept what is and allow yourself to release what cannot be controlled surrender to what is and release give yourself permission to feel your emotions and name them whether it is disappointment anger loss or sadness write about these feelings talk about them with a trusted friend or counselor acknowledging your feelings is an important step toward healing and understanding acceptance does not mean giving up it means making peace with the moment so you can move forward with greater clarity and strength rest and be open sometimes plans don t work out because they are not meant to and sometimes it simply isn t the right time there is our timing and divine timing delays can reveal new perspectives highlight what needs to change and guide us toward a better path trust the process stay open to guidance and allow clarity to unfold trust even when things don t go as planned keep faith in your journey you are supported and your life has purpose even if the path ahead isn t fully visible yet be open to clarity and guidance trusting that they will come when the time is right take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is an amazon bestselling author licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach dedicated to supporting compassionate helpers lisahutchison net 3 comments silence isn t peace understanding passive behavior april 30 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc empath toolkit psychology relationships boundaries healing life love mental health passive behavior psychology relationships passive individuals tend to wait for things to happen rather than take the initiative this keeps them from setting personal goals or taking consistent action towards them often when you step in to help they do not follow through when they encounter a problem or issue they tend to avoid it rather than attempt to solve it why do people act passive people act passively for a variety of reasons but it is not from a lack of desire they may truly want change change for them brings up feelings of uncertainty and fear this blocks them from moving forward many people who act passively have low self esteem and are easily overwhelmed when faced with a decision they do not trust their own judgment some passive behavior is learned in childhood they may have had a passive parent who modeled this behavior to them they learned this way of relating other children knew that communicating directly was either discouraged or ineffective they learned to use passive methods to get their needs met for others passivity became a habit they developed learned helplessness and waited for others to take the lead how do those who are passive communicate most have learned to communicate indirectly they do not feel safe asserting themselves instead they may use sarcasm or the silent treatment when angry they may procrastinate or avoid doing a task the bottom line is they fear conflict and try to avoid it at all costs the irony is that avoidance and inaction often bring on the conflict they are desperately trying to avoid when feelings are repressed passive people believe they are not expressing their feelings yet the feelings of inaction are felt by those around them indirect or no communication is communication this can lead to miscommunications and feelings of confusion in others causing relationship issues how to not take passivity personally a passive person lacks enthusiasm effort and action their outward actions can make them appear as if they do not care even when they genuinely do passivity is almost always about another person s internal world it does not reflect on your worth as a person it s about how they cope with the world taking care of you and your needs which includes implementing self care is important at times it can be helpful to have an open and honest discussion to express how their passive actions affect you this discussion is not aimed at changing their behavior but rather to express your feelings and come to a resolution for yourself you need to set boundaries and stop taking responsibility for their lack of action this means not stepping in to try and fix or do tasks they need to do assert your expectations don t chase or overextend their lack of action is their responsibility not yours to avoid taking another s passivity personally you need to be able to separate your emotions from their passivity mindfulness practices can help you identify these thoughts and feelings remember their lack of action is about their comfort zone it has nothing to do with your value as a person take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach she works comments the power of not taking things personally march 27 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc empath toolkit psychology relationships boundaries detachment healing mental health personal growth psychology relationships self care letting go of what others say do or think doesn t mean becoming distant or uncaring it means staying grounded in yourself when you live from your center you know who you are and what you value from that place your choices relationships and goals show your true self this is not a skill you are born with but rather an ability you can develop with practice you will grow more confident secure and at ease in your own skin you can not control others we all perceive and interact with the world in different ways this is because your upbringing as a child differs from that of someone else two children who grew up in the same household often report different family dynamics and experiences how you grew up the values you hold dear and even the way you think all influence your worldview it makes sense that misunderstandings and miscommunications are bound to happen what can change is how much power you give those moments i once heard the saying don t let others rent space in your head in other words don t let yourself dwell on what people say do or think you decide how much attention you give to those things you also choose if you give them any attention at all letting go isn t always easy but it is possible it s a choice you can practice know yourself the more clearly you understand your values and boundaries the stronger you become on the inside take time to sit with yourself and journal ask what values matter most to me some examples are kindness honesty ambition or creativity then ask what matters more to me than being liked or approved of is it independence speaking your truth or even inner peace often it s not just what someone says or does that upsets you it s why it affects you so deeply look beneath the surface is this touching an old wound or conflicting with how you see yourself when you understand the real source of the trigger you can respond rather than react build up your emotional boundaries healthy boundaries aren t rigid rules but rather flexible guidelines that show others what behavior is and isn t acceptable to you being clear and assertive about these boundaries is an important part of not taking things personally one way to set a boundary is to pause before responding give yourself a moment to think and process you can say i need some time to think about this or i ll get back to you with an answer sometimes choosing silence in the moment is the most effective way to prevent a situation from escalating focus on what you want when you catch yourself replaying what someone said or did view it as an opportunity to take back your power gently shift your attention toward what you do want instead of staying stuck on what you don t redirect your focus to your goals your desires and the things that bring you joy surround yourself with people who see you clearly you don t need everyone s love and approval what matters most is having a small circle of supportive and loving friends these are the people who know you they respect your boundaries celebrate your wins and stand by you when you have genuine support the rest does not matter be gentle with yourself letting go is a process not something you perfect overnight some days you ll handle things well and other days you won t it is all okay what matters is you re learning and treating yourself with compassion take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach she works for caring professionals who want to heal grief and compassion fatigue lisa empowers you to psychology relationships comedy copingskills health humor humortherapy laughter mental health self care humor is more than entertainment it s healing it can improve your memory make you more productive and connect with others compassionate helpers often carry tension in their upper back and shoulders a good laugh can loosen your shoulders clear your head and make the day feel a little lighter whether you work or live in a stressful environment or you re constantly supporting others laughter can be one of the simplest ways to reset your mood know your audience humor is subjective meaning what one person finds funny another may not a well intentioned joke may fall flat or offend someone some people enjoy silly jokes while others prefer a dry sense of humor at work sarcasm can help you get through a hectic day with your colleagues pay attention to how the people around you use humor notice what they laugh at and how they respond when you joke around humor works best when it brings people together not when it puts someone on the spot or puts them down when in doubt laugh at yourself this shows you don t take life too seriously and helps others relax around you sharing laughter with others humor can make conversations easier help people open up and create a sense of connection you can share a funny story send a meme or watch something silly together even playful activities such as games or lighthearted videos can bring people closer there are also more structured ways to bring laughter into your life such as laughter yoga which mixes breathing stretching and intentional laughter ways to bring more humor into your life laughing at your own mishaps watching a funny show or movie reading comics or memes keeping a few funny pictures or quotes nearby reading a humor book going to a comedy show whether you work or live in a stressful environment finding something to laugh about can help you reset your energy and feel more grounded humor doesn t erase stress but it makes the load a little lighter and sometimes that s exactly what you need take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual self care selfboundaries selfcare you hear a lot about setting boundaries with other people but what about with yourself self boundaries aren t about restriction or self criticism they re about self respect the more you set and hold boundaries for yourself the more you develop self trust this is the foundation for a grounded and intentional life why it is necessary when you don t set boundaries with yourself you have no direction you say yes to everything you break promises to yourself and to others this leaves you feeling anxious frustrated guilty or out of control when you set clear limits with yourself you find that you protect your energy you now have space for what really matters in your life you stop living reactively and start living intentionally boundaries reduce uncertainty which decreases overwhelm in your life you know what to expect from yourself and others this creates less inner conflict stress and lowers any resentments what self boundaries look like self boundaries are not dramatic or rigid they re small consistent commitments to guide your behavior for example i schedule time for lunch i stop working at 6 30 p m even if i didn t finish everything i don t say yes on the spot i give myself time to think i move my body for 15 minutes a day no negotiations i check my calendar before committing to others i shut my phone off an hour before bedtime these boundaries aren t punishments they re anchors which help ground your energy how to start setting boundaries with yourself 1 identify your energy dra...
