laide mail how the story of the manchester test was one of the favourites of mine when i was a boy small enough to sit on my father s knee more than once as he finished the story he said to me i couldn t make the winning hit for england that day but one day you must help england to win possibly nay probably that story inspired in me the desire to play cricket for england tate also told reynold s illustrated news in 1931 when i was still a toddler he used to say one day you will make up for that missed catch of mine maurice certainly did so perhaps redeeming the family name and making it easier for his father to tell the tale of the test match fred tate died on 24 february 1943 aged 75 his wisden obituary was a fair one but more than half of it was taken up with the old trafford match the cricketer obituary was shorter but more balanced offering just a sentence that he played once for england in 1902 gertrude despite her ill health lived until 1955 note the breakdown of tate s bowling figures in the first innings of the old trafford test is taken from the reconstruction by charles davis this gives tate s figures for the innings as 11 1 45 0 differing from the official return by a single run one of the spells must therefore have yielded one run less than recorded here share this share on reddit opens in new window reddit print opens in new window print charles alcock famous cricketers and cricket grounds 1895 it was once an efficient form of mental shorthand to reference incredible individual performances by naming a match after the player concerned hence jessop s match alletson s match verity s match and so on so it was a particularly cruel irony that one of the closest most exciting test matches ever played was named after a man blamed for a devastating loss the fourth test of the 1902 ashes played at old trafford was known for many years as tate s match after fred tate playing his only test tate had a poor albeit not disastrous game and was blamed in some quarters for england s defeat by three runs even at the time such a verdict was viewed as unfair and yet the test became long remembered as tate s match even today the phrase sometimes appears in cricket media it is something of an injustice to tate s memory for historians too the pull of the 1902 ashes has been far too strong to resist in telling tate s story they have begun and ended with old trafford this lack of interest has only been exacerbated by the identity of tate s son maurice tate became one of england s greatest bowlers and if he redeemed the family name for posterity he completely overshadowed his unfortunate father maurice s two main biographers gerald brodribb in 1976 and justin parkinson in 2013 discussed his father in some detail but even they were swamped by the legend of old trafford and a father is naturally only ever a supporting character in the biography of his son but tate perhaps deserves a little more recognition not least because more is known about him than many of the anonymous pros who populated english cricket around the turn of the twentieth century men who rarely rise above the figures in the scorebook although never a great cricketer tate was a solid and respectable one until his brush with notoriety he was the epitome of the journeyman professional and given the path his life might have taken that was a considerable feat in itself frederick william tate was born in brighton on 24 july 1867 but not as an 1891 profile in cricket suggested under the very shade of the parish church of st peter his life began in the worst way possible in victorian society in the infirmary of brighton workhouse to make matters worse for his future prospects his mother the 30 year old sarah tate was unmarried if tate ever knew who his father was the information is unrecorded by history justin parkinson relates that the family believed tate s father was a mysterious russian prince family trees on the ancestry website suggest the irish peer william barnard de blaquiere who inherited the title of baron de blaquiere four years after tate s birth quite where such stories might have emerged is unclear but there is certainly no evidence to support them and they seem extremely unlikely perhaps just romantic attempts to legitimise tate s origins tate s birthplace would have been the old workhouse brighton s new establishment opened two months after tate was born life there like in any workhouse would have been austere and brutal inmates were expected to work hard for their bed and meagre food but sarah was not a long term resident by the time of the 1871 census she and fred lived with her mother on chichester street in brighton at the time sarah worked as a milliner her mother was an upholsterer and her younger brother tate s uncle who also lived in the house was a decorator ten years later the family lived in the same house on a road renamed kingsbury street tate s uncle had moved away but his mother and grandmother both worked as upholsterers tate grew up near a large park called the level parkinson speculates reasonably but with no evidence that he spent a lot of time playing there when he was young in an interview with the mid sussex times in 1941 tate said that he was the first of his family to take cricket seriously although many relatives were fond of the game he certainly became involved with st peter s church which he joined as a choirboy and in 1883 the church set up a cricket team for the choirboys which by 1888 was playing in a brighton league st peter s church brighton where tate was in the choir image hassocks5489 on wikimedia commons many years later tate told the story of how when he was a choirboy at the age of 16 he was bowling in a makeshift cricket match when the reverend j j hannah the vicar spotted him and invited him to join the newly formed cricket club in his first match against the sussex club and ground team he took four for 12 and never looked back tate certainly excelled for example a report in the brighton times for 1884 shows him sixth in the batting list with 148 runs at an average just under eight and third in the bowling and the leading wicket taker with 62 wickets at 3 51 despite the modest level at which he was playing tate soon made an impact around this time sussex had employed the former nottinghamshire and england bowler alfred shaw as a kind of talent spotter he criss crossed the county organising trial matches and during his travels shaw spotted tate and saw some promise therefore tate joined sussex s nursery funded by lord sheffield as a professional and was coached by shaw and the derbyshire professional william mycroft in 1885 tate made his debut for the sussex colts team useful performances kept him around the fringes of the county scene with the colts the breakthrough came in 1887 he played for sussex s first eleven in a non first class match against hampshire and shortly after made his first class debut against yorkshire he was not especially successful but when he returned to play for st peter s he had an excellent season with the bat averaging 35 and taking 68 wickets at 4 67 to head the averages at a time when the county programme was patchy and disorganised tate played a full season with sussex in 1888 on paper his performance was unimpressive he averaged under five with the bat and took only 30 wickets in 15 matches but five of those wickets came in an extraordinary spell that was widely noticed kent needed four runs to win with six wickets in hand then tate took five wickets for one run in sixteen deliveries each one bowled kent nevertheless crept to a one wicket win but all the talk was of tate he still spoke fondly of the game in 1941 calling it a wonderful match and how the last man scored the winning single by dropping the ball at his feet and running a desperate run he recalled being given 2 by his team mates as a mark of his impact even so tate s final average of 19 66 was no more than respectable in a wet season during which the leading bowlers averaged under 14 the following season which was a bad one for sussex generally even though he was almost ever present in the team he took just 24 wickets at 25 37 but he was no worse than the other bowlers all of whom toiled on the flat brighton pitches and his mediocre returns do not explain his complete absence from the sussex team in 1890 his 1891 cricket profile attributed this to an illness but he was well enough to be made the vice captain of the st peter s team that summer parkinson suggests based on the fact that by the end of that year tate owed 11 shillings for his annual st peter s subscription that he had money worries but the real answer was a little more complicated at the time sussex had a limited programme meaning that pay was poor compared to busier richer counties therefore it was common for professionals to make up any shortfall by playing for other teams for example tate had taken all ten wickets for 24 runs playing for hastings against the university wanderers at hastings in 1889 and it was reported by the mid sussex times in march 1890 that tate would be unavailable for the forthcoming season because he had accepted an engagement with mr fred bailey the well known corn and forage government contractor the engagement was most likely a combined role working in an administrative capacity for bailey combined with a cricketing engagement for his teams bailey was a keen cricketer associated with cuckfield cricket club and known for importing players from outside to the consternation of locals tate still had time to play for st peter s and teams such as the linfield and haywards heath club most impressively perhaps was an innings played for the sussex farmers and corn dealers against their surrey counterparts when he scored a match winning 107 he also took all ten wickets playing for horley against the point house ramblers and recorded a hat trick for hastings against an mcc team so perhaps tate was seeking to maximise his income by reducing his commitments to sussex in order to play more games or he had simply decided that county cricket was not working out for him but in his 1941 interview tate offered another explanation he had decided to qualify for lancashire after the 1889 season the idea had merit because lancashire paid better than almost every other county only surrey could realistically compete with lancashire s wages and were always on the look out for professionals from outside its boundaries several nottinghamshire born players had been attracted there in the 1880s and arthur mold had joined from northamptonshire in 1889 if this does not quite tally with tate s continued presence in sussex during the 1890 season qualification rules required him to live in lancashire for two years to play for the county there is some corroboration although tate s chronology is suspect the 1891 census records tate as a boarder living in little lever bolton where he listed his occupation as book keeper and clerk the likeliest explanation is that tate s decision came after the 1890 season because local newspapers record tate playing for little lever cricket club as a professional early in the 1891 season but he only played a handful of matches because he was recalled by sussex early in the season nevertheless he played for a little lever and district team against the lancashire eleven one of the county s warm up matches before their official programme began and took eleven for 32 in damp conditions the athletic news noted with some regret in june 1891 that tate had only really played against castleton before disappearing for a month after being engaged by sussex for the season he had returned in june to bid his farewells realising that he could not play in lancashire for little lever if he was representing sussex hundreds of miles away fred tate image wikipedia something had changed though because tate took 80 first class wickets at 17 45 during the 1891 season far better than anything he had done before even if his batting remained negligible although he scored a century for st peter s still returning to play there whenever he could that summer he carried the sussex attack almost alone which was the story of the next decade and had best figures of seven for 17 against gloucestershire wisden singled him out for praise giving him credit for sussex s good season and noting that on slow pitches he showed himself quite a first rate bowler and there is no reason why with increased perseverance and a better command of his pitch length he should not become proportionately good when the grounds are fast his cricket profile published that season singled out his figures of six for 23 on a sticky wicket against kent and noted that his fielding was vastly improved it suggested that he was highly regarded in sussex circles as the most promising bowler for many years and keenly treasured because he was purely a product of the county tate was a fairly fast bowler at the time although he slowed down and relied more on spin later in his career but his progress slowed as the brighton pitch flattened and as the county struggled to bowl teams out he took 79 wickets in 1892 but averaged over twenty and just 31 wickets at an average in excess of thirty in 1893 so it was no enormous surprise when he lost his place in the team in 1894 which passed without much comment in the press he played for numerous other teams and excelled as a sprinter in some local athletics meetings but his time as a cricketer seemed to have passed and at the start of 1895 it was announced that he had taken a short coaching engagement at oxford university he was certainly working as a coach in the early 1890s because in later years the surrey captain and england selector h d g leveson gower recalled receiving private coaching as a pupil at winchester college he called him one of the most accurate bowlers i saw or played against but there might have been other reasons for tate s absence gertrude maria beach was the daughter of a surveyor and sanitary inspector who lived in haywards heath sussex parkinson suggests that her father william was an architect who had designed many houses in the area on 29 may 1895 aged 24 she ...
