e of my first wobbly steps and it was definitely the thing to do back then bronzed baby shoes seemed to be part of the decor in most of the homes i visited when i was a kid so those bronze shoes say something about my generational identity i m not quite sure what they say but there it is i found a few websites that claim bronzed baby shoes are still a great keepsake but i m pretty sure i ve never seen a pair belonging to anyone under the age of 50 as lasting keepsakes go my bronzed shoes didn t quite achieve vintage status i found them when we were cleaning out mom s house and the coating was cracked and broken with the none too sturdy white leather sticking out happily my vintage feet are still in good condition and worth keeping i think i remember this ad lots of good boinging sounds the first great shoes i actually remember red ball jets easy to remember really because it was important to call them by the full name they weren t just ordinary shoes we knew that when we wore them we would run faster jump higher stop on a dime all the ads said so and it was true we felt compelled to demonstrate our improved speed and bounciness as soon as we put on a new pair it was a great feeling even after the red ball inevitably came off the heel with only a little help from prying fingers while i was in elementary school none of my shoes fit me for long enough to be particularly memorable by the time i was in second grade i wore the same shoe size as my mother granted she had small feet but still i must have been moving up in size every few months what was more memorable than the shoes themselves was shopping for them an experience totally different from what we do now going to buy school shoes for four kids was an event we always went downtown to the same shoe store i don t remember the name of the store but i knew mr walker would be fitting our shoes and i only just now realize that he must have smiled through a lot of bad jokes as people matched up his name with his profession he always wore a suit and tie and greeted us with a big smile he was also the mayor of our small town and his daughter was in my class there was a touch of ceremony in the whole process a mini rite of passage at the beginning of each new school year where i would first stand on the metal sizer and mr walker would make sure my foot was placed just so then he would slide the measuring bits into place solemnly announce my new size and go to gather some boxes of shoes for me to try on as he straddled his odd little bench i would prop my foot on the front of it he carefully slipped my foot into the shoe tied it had me stand up so he could feel where my toes were and let me walk a bit so i could see how they felt and then he did the same for each of my siblings it always felt like an important day another step on the road to becoming grown up mom added a bit more to the tradition by sending us out to walk on the gravel driveway at home to roughen up the slick bottoms of our new shoes to make it slightly less likely that we would slip and fall during the inevitiable running around that we would be doing by the time i was in fifth grade my size was pretty stable and i was able to wear my shoes for long enough to really appreciate them and the first pair of shoes that i remember absolutely loving my black low top sneakers i wore them every day i wore them with everything pants dresses and always with white ankle socks my favorite pairing was when i wore my yellow easter dress to school with those grungy sneakers and droopy white socks it may have been my first deliberate fashion statement such as it was as they wore out and started to look really shabby i loved them even more they were beat up enough that some boys in my class noticed and started calling them my rent a shoes that made them even better as far as i was concerned and then it happened one day i was getting ready to go somewhere and i couldn t find my shoes i looked under the bed i searched through my closet and i finally asked my mom if she knew where they were and she did they were in the trash she said they were a mess and she couldn t imagine why i d want to wear them so she threw them away without even asking me i m still a bit annoyed about it but easily the most important footwear from my adolescent days my roller skates nearly every weekend throughout junior high i showed up for two sometimes three sessions at the same skating rink where my mother had skated as teenager with the same owner orville skating backwards through the crowd blowing his whistle at anyone going too fast or showing off in a hazardous way i think he blew his whistle at me once but usually he just smiled and gave me a slow down hand motion as i whizzed past the design on my skate case looked kind of like this but i think mine was a bit brighter and i was pretty fast after i learned how to stay upright that is during my first outing at the skating rink i basically just held onto the railings along the sides pulling myself along falling on my butt every time i had to cross the entrance exit spaces but for some reason i still loved it enough to keep working at it once i could maintain my balance and picked up some speed it was like i was dancing on wheels i couldn t get enough of it i never really learned to do anything fancy never was much good at skating backwards or spinning in circles i just liked zooming around in circles in time to the music sometimes to my own records if we brought our own 45s orville would play them during the all skate this was highly preferable to the music he played which sounded a lot like merry go round music probably the same tunes he d played when my mom skated there 25 years earlier there was also a sense of freedom and responsibility in going to the skating rink a safe place where our parents could drop us off where we paid our own entrance fee had money to spend on snacks were free to mingle with the crowd but once i got to high school i stopped going i think it was mostly because by that time my friends and my siblings didn t really go much anymore even though i mainly skated on my own it was always better to have friends there and after a couple of weirdly uncomfortable experiences with older guys asking me to skate with them i was reluctant to go by myself but soon i learned to drive and had other wheels that could take me to lots of different activities i did get to revisit my passion for roller skating when my daughter was young as her elementary school hosted regular fund raisers at the local rink i found i could still manage quite nicely and thoroughly enjoyed myself during those events though my daughter found my dancey skating style somewhat embarrassing roller skating was about as sporty as i got as a kid so i never needed any special sport related shoes but my kids did so i can t help but think of the significance of all the soccer cleats and running shoes i have bought over the years even though i never wore them they stand out as historic and social markers in my own life recalling events and travel that shaped my days for 20 years our son tried out several sports but he stuck with soccer from the age of 8 through high school and played on intramural leagues in college he played on club teams so we did a lot of driving as we traveled to regular matches and tournaments our weekends were planned around soccer for years it was a big part of our social life as club soccer went we had it pretty easy because we had only one child involved in the sport lots of our son s teammates came to a tournament with one parent while the other parent was at a different tournament with their siblings often in a different state for us it was mostly fun and relaxing even when it meant getting up early and or watching a game in the heat cold rain and it s a good thing we enjoyed it i remember a particulary early very cold morning when our son was in high school we were watching a winter indoor soccer game i had just discovered that i was pregnant with our second child and i realized as i shivered in the dark with my hands shoved deep into my coat pockets that we were going to be doing this for the rest of our lives and ok it wasn t exactly for the rest of our lives and we moved to southern california so we dealt with heat far more often than cold but we did start the whole team parent process over again not long after our son left for college our daughter did play soccer but when i saw how fast she was on the field i searched to see if there was such a thing as kids track teams and yes indeed california has lots of teams for young runners so from the time she was six our weekend schedules were once again planned for us buying her running shoes brought me back to the experience of having a sales person taking a professional advisory interest in our footwear selection but they were far more thorough than mr walker had been with my school shoes they measured her feet carefully prodded her toes and heels when she tried the shoes on examined her gait watched her run down the sidewalk in front of the store choosing running shoes is a bit more scientific than picking the right pair of buster browns i was never a runner but i learned a lot about commitment endurance and persistence from watching young kids run especially cross country runners it s amazing to watch kids run week after week on hot dusty hilly courses courses that make them cry make them thow up especially considering the fact that only a small percentage of them will ever win the races they train for but the ones who stick with it win in so many ways with boys and girls in all different age groups all training together running along the course to encourage their teammates after their own races are over pushing through the pain and sweat to improve their personal time on the course glorying in the accomplishment regardless of how it compares with anyone else s time celebrating because they reached a goal ready to set a new one still makes me tear up a bit just thinking about it though we have something of a generation gap between our two children they did have the chance to participate on a sports team together when he became her soccer coach for a couple of years while he was working on his master s degree i was the official coach but all the girls knew who was boss and they simply loved him a 25 year old guy teaching a bunch of 10 year old girls all he knew from years of playing soccer a coach who always encouraged them never yelled at them a scientist who was ready to teach them how to do any moves they were willing to try they had an undefeated season made it to the regional tournament and won the sportsmanship award for the local league the head of the league told me that a championship team had never won the sportsmanship award not till our boy got to coach his little sister as a coach he left some big shoes to fill like i said i have no interest in running but i can walk all day for the right kind of view it s hard to think of any type of shoes that have been more special to me than the many pairs of hiking boots i ve trudged about in over the years it s a style of footwear vital to most of our family vacations boots that have transported us to amazing places when we moved to los angeles from philadelphia it was our hiking boots that helped us adapt to our new surroundings we had never traveled past the middle of the country and finding ourselves in a place like southern california was bewildering for quite a while dry mountainous no discernable change in seasons relentless sunshine so many people but also big patches of wilderness not so far from traffic filled concrete we hit the trails every weekend and learned california from the ground up lacing up my hiking boots brings to mind challenging climbs wildlife sightings surprising changes in weather incredible views and shared memories with friends and family as well as anticipation for what i ll find on the next trail i also think about how my children participated in hiking and camping with wonder and enthusiasm when very young then how they grumbled a bit about forced marches and regularly asked how much longer during early adolescence and how in their later teens they came back around to wonder and enthusiasm fueled by their recognition of the outdoor skills and knowledge of nature that they had that many of their friends did not and i was filled with wonder and enthusiasm when our son s first requirement of us when his son was born was that we would come along on the baby s first camping trip as soon as the weather was warm enough at seven months the little guy wasn t ready for hiking boots yet so we bought him a backpack to ride in and he s a natural outdoorsman unlike with other favorite shoes i have a feeling of satisfaction when my hiking boots need to be replaced there s a sense of accomplishment a job well doneness about knowing that i have traveled so many rugged miles in them that they are exhausted and that i need a new pair for the trails i still need to explore back when i was wearing my shabby sneakers to school every day and zipping around the rink in my roller skates each weekend i m pretty sure i never gave any thought to what shoes i might wear when i was a grandma but if i had i m pretty sure whatever i imagined would have been too boring to contemplate which is no doubt why i never thought about them but guess what now that i am a grandma i find i have no interest in boring shoes i much prefer shoes that cause complete strangers men and women alike to stop and comment on how cool they look not that i m wearing them so other people will notice them comfort and general wearability is still a top consideration when i look for new shoes because it does me no good to have a great looking pair of shoes if i can t walk in them but i do care about one person who will definitely notice my shoes my husband because he notices everything and while he s not weird about it or anything he s a great appreciator of stylish women s shoes it makes him inordinately happy if i m wearing cool footwear who am i to deny him such a simple pleasure also at this grandma stage of my life i find myself more concerned about my personal fashion statement than ever before even though part of me always wants to wear jeans a baggy sweater and flip flops and not worry about what anyone thinks about it i also want to show the world i m not ready to give in and be an old lady to remind myself that just because i ve reached a certain age it s not time to fade into the background and it doesn t mean that dressing young is the answer definitely not but it does mean that when this gramma needs a new pair of shoes she s looking for something with style and finally the most special shoes of all a 40 year old pair of docksiders my husband had these shoes when we met i think we discovered early in our relationship
