Text of the page (random words):
i read an article once about a construction worker who fell from above and impaled himself on a piece of rebar i think that it was quite a process to get him out of that situation again the puncture was not life threatening as i remember though there was a tremendous amount of pain involved he had to wait at the construction site until the authorities could figure out how best to release him at least that incident is understandable a terrible accident i seem to remember that the outcome was good he survived if he s still around i m sure he must telling the tale of that fall or his friends are telling it those montana hikers seem to all be in their early thirties maybe late twenties too old to be doing something stupid enough to get accidently impaled by a trekking pole yeah as kids most of us did stupid stuff with odd results at times but these guys seem beyond that stage in life i doubt that i ll ever hear a follow up on this particular story things are big news for a day or two but the follow ups are rare nowadays the news media is in a shambles anyhow real journalists are few and far between the news supervisors the editors the guy all the reporters in the movies call chief all of those people seem to be nowhere in sight otherwise we might have some follow up on major stories instead of going from one shiny news object to another to another maybe it s just me i want to hear a lot more about how this dude gets himself impaled on his trekking pole did he just roll over on it and it happened to be driven through his back if he fell how does that kind of a thing happen maybe it was all just the result of a clumsy fall what are his friends stories to explain it just curious not important overall just one of those many mysteries in life 1 comment filed under humor tagged as adventure backpacking hiking nature travel july 24 2026 1 49 am castles and rich people i wrote about the lord and ladies beds in the castle being built high up partly so that the rodents don t get up there maybe that was just speculative blather by the current runners of the castle the tourist inveiglers the castle caretakers made up bits of jibber jabber because it seems to me that most respectable rodents could easily climb up a wooden bed leg i think if i were a rodent that i could do it but what do i know the little story did remind me of one of my uncles though one of those odd random memories that emerge from the mental murk i almost wrote mental mist but that phrase seemed a bit too polite and misleading neighbors and relatives were gathered out in my mother s back yard maybe for 4th of july or perhaps for another holiday we were having a barbeque it was a longlong time ago most of the people i remember as i see it in my memory who were there at the time are long gone released long ago from their earthly travails my uncle was a lawyer he had been a lobbyist for nasa and i don t know what else along the way he made lots of money he married into a wealthy family too when i knew him he lived in brentwood a very wealthy section of los angeles he lived nearby the house that o j simpson lived in when o j was arrested he lived next to the la district attorney who my uncle was suing by the way for some inter neighborhood lawyerly squabble stuff his wife bragged about the tiles on the floors of their mansion that had been imported from italy they were very house proud it seemed mostly because the place cost so much maybe that s just me my faulty interpretation but i don t think so my uncle liked to drop names he threw names around long past his lobbyist days and i always knew long past when he actually had professional contact with powerful people and could have had some sway to influence things in my teaching days he told me a few times that he would put a good word in for me with the superintendent i always thanked him but i never held my breath waiting for a result no sid thompson or whomever had the job at the moment never called me oh i should say that old sid thompson did call my principal once however to discuss my actions yeah that old memory just managed to somehow briskly emerge out of the meandering murk the district had fourteen or so gun incidents all of a sudden one year they were not necessarily shootings but guns found with students at schools it became a big story in the papers the public got a little worked up after the publicity and concerned activists demanded action so the lausd solution was to send hand held metal detectors to every school oh there was some hastily written policy connected with it including that schools were supposed to pull ten students randomly from random classes once a day and wand them that was their solution i was working as dean at virgil middle school in those days and i was the one who were expected to pull the students out of class for the metal detector fishing expeditions oh it sounded good enough in the public relations i guess and bought some time but to me it was a nonsensical waste of time i sat down and wrote a letter to the la times about what a pr stunt it all was i don t remember what my letter said but it was well written and it pointed out the absurdity and pretense of the policy the times published the letter since the school gun incidents and the district response was still big news the principal called me into his office the next morning after the letter was published i got a call from sid thompson this morning he said i made some sarcastic comment about how at least we knew the superintendent could read i got along well with this particular principal and so i knew that he might appreciate the humor the principal let my rough attempt at humor go by and he said he wanted me to have a talk with you oh i said intimidation from the top that s a new one sometimes the truth hurts i guess poor sid i thought did shooting the messenger even work in ancient greece well then consider this the talk he said that was it he had done his job and i left his office and we both got to work but that s a side story means nothing this post is about rodents and high beds i think anyway at this barbeque several of the people there were loudly discussing the squirrels doing their high wire walks back and forth along the high strung telephone lines my uncle sidled up beside me and said quietly they think those are squirrels i looked again they were squirrels what are they i asked i was curious to hear what he would say rats he said definitively my house is full of them i wondered if he had high beds in his house no i didn t wonder that because i only recently learned about the high bed castle reasons i just thought of that now hey a man s house is his castle they all say that i wonder if he had no handed clocks in his house too but i guess that s not fair mean i should say that when i was a small kid he was my favorite uncle my mother his older sister would have said he meant well anyway he had all of his fingers and no extras on his other hand see previous post a man s home is his castle they all say that but maybe we shouldn t drag the analogy too far leave a comment filed under humor tagged as family life writing july 22 2026 7 51 am castles they say a man s home is his castle whoever they are ada and i happened to be in slovakia for a day to tour a castle well the castle in the pictures here is the second slovakian castle that we toured the first one we went to a few days before seems a bit strange now that i m thinking of it but there it is we were in a polish town called zakopane for a week and the son of the couple whom we travelled with lives in zakopane he drove us all over the border to among other tourist things visit the castles this second castle seemed a lot more severe that the first one higher and more massive visitors were able to climb up through the rooms if they had the proper ticket very cheap and the stamina to get up the steps of course in the earliest days there were no steps up to various defensive sections there would have been ladders it was extensive and built over centuries we ve been to castles in the united kingdom they seem tame in comparison to these slovakian things we ve been to castles in ireland mostly in ruins i never got much of a sense of the people who built and lived in the places what feudalism was really all about in these slovakian castles i had a better conception of that of feudalism in this second slovakian castle there were several rooms of former residence ada stood out on an overlook to the town below i could imagine the lording it over aspects of being able to look down upon and survey the peasantry good for defense too of course somehow in visiting the british and the irish castles i never had that realization that the people who owned the castles were really the lords of the manor so to speak one room in this castle the one pictured had portraits of the owners over the centuries in one painting the fancy lord seemed to have six fingers on one hand and four on the other the local tale mentioned on a note was that he took with six fingers and gave with four that kind of set the tone for me gave a lot of inside information also the master s bed was high up off the floor and one of the reasons for this was mentioned that the height discouraged rodents this bed was in a room way up toward the top of the place so that told me a lot too one more mention above a servant s bed was a clock but it had no hands this was supposedly to impress upon the servants that they were to be available 24 hours a day why not simply have no clock what use is a clock with no hands well just to intimidate i suppose nice boss i suspect that these centuries of lords and ladies would not be my special cups of tea it was a nice place to visit but i wouldn t have wanted to live there 1 comment filed under humor tagged as castles europe history travel july 17 2026 1 23 pm if i had a million there is a 1932 film about a dying tycoon who decides to give random people a million dollars each he looks in a phone book as i remember and mails them each a check i vaguely remember watching the film one of the recipients was w c fields w c fields works in a china shop as i remember for a bullying boss and when he all of a sudden gets the million bucks he buys fancy clothes and struts into the shop he had a brand new sturdy cane and in front of the boss he begins swinging it wildly and breaking everything in the shop someone else who gets a million is intensely bothered by road hogs so he buys a fleet of cars and drivers and they go out in search of road hogs when he sees someone hogging the road one of his cars drives in front of the road hog and one car behind and the offending road hog is intentionally and savagely crushed between them the road hog hunters then abandon the cars and go out in search of other road hogs with new vehicles in their adamant pursuit i don t remember the other parts of the movie what the other recipients do with their million the old movie came to mind though recently due to my unexpected financial good fortune yeah out of the blue i worked for the catholic schools for ten years maybe i should have listened to my mother and gone to the public school system sooner i would have a far better retirement pension now but that s the way it goes this old boy doesn t cry over spilt milk the archdiocese paid me next to nothing and they had absolutely no pension program for elementary school teachers back then maybe they do now about six months ago i got a letter from some corporation up in san francisco asking me to send them some information in order for them to process my retirement benefits they handled the los angeles archdiocese retirement benefits they said they hadn t asked for any vital personal information but nevertheless my first thought was that the whole thing was a scam can t be too careful these days so i checked the company out checked also with the la archdiocese and determined that it was all on the up and up the only thing was that i retired a long long time ago and it was weird that they now wanted to sign me up for retirement benefits i am generally skeptical so i wasn t going to believe it until the actual money showed up and it did there was a small mix up for a week or so but the money came of course you can t compare the retirement money i get with the million dollars in 1932 but one has to adjust for inflation once i got one of those reader s digest fake newspapers in the mail with the headline dan h wins 1 000 000 i posted it up on my dean s office wall and forgot about it maybe it was up there for a year or two one day i was walking a poor latina immigrant woman along the school hallway from my office after having a conference with her about her son she said that she had seen the newspaper in my office before i could tell her that it was fake she told me but you know she told me seriously as if i should take her serious advice to heart a million dollars doesn t go as far as it used to okay i concurred so as it turns out i get out of the blue forty three dollars a month from the archdiocese for the next five years well a million dollars in 1932 money might be a bit more than forty three 2026 dollars but how much more i should re calculate the rate sometime inflation you know a friend of mine suggested that maybe the archdiocese had been sued or something that might be the reason they are sending me money now after all i stopped teaching in the catholic schools in 1985 in this case i don t plan to ask any questions if i did they might abruptly come to their senses and cancel my windfall there was also some retroactive pay i won t tell you how much that was i ll be too busy anyway bidding for that pristine island off the coast of albania ada and i saw it last year when we visited albania i plan to buy it outright from the kushners and give it back to the albanians they seem to be nice people the albanians i mean 2 comments filed under humor july 13 2026 1 10 pm lost sandals i attached a pair of tiva sandals to the back of my backpack when ada and i were going to poland the thought did cross my mind that they could slip out so i tightened the straps a bit i shoved a book under them too and made sure that it was all secure sure i think that the book may have acted as a slide i m blaming it on the book only after we arrived at the airport did i notice that the sandals and the book were gone they had mysteriously escaped from the cincture on the bus to the airport from union station i had put the pack down sideways on a neighboring seat when i noticed at the airport that the sandals were no longer there ada suggested that they may have slid out on the bus when i put the pack down as good a theory as any i know that la metro has a lost and found i ve read articles about it evidently not many people are aware of a lost and found and so most items lost and stored there are never recovered i think that i may one day get my sandals back we ll see i chose that part...
