it smoothly comes to a stop at each stage relays are picking up and dropping out there were a series of relays for each floor that is how there were well over 100 relays as i watched the relays i was learning a lesson in logic once i understood how everything worked then when the elevator starts acting up i would know where to find the issue the coal dumper operated with a lot of relays as well it would pull the coal train forward and make sure it is in the proper place then it would turn a train car over and dump the coal down into a hopper when that was done it would start over again it didn t have as many relays as the elevator but it still had about 50 of them blueprints were vital to following the circuits to find a problem when the dumper stopped working a rotary dumper much like the one that was at our power plant when i arrived at dell computer to work in the it department in 2001 i was on the customer experience team within a year or so we had merged into the finance it group i quickly learned that many of the applications that ran the company were made in house that means some programmer or a team of programmers wrote the applications the entire hr application for dell was an in house application i think it had a name like dell hr thanks matt it is called hr direct maybe it was something more sophisticated than that i will leave it up to matt kurio to tell me since after our it bootcamp i think he went to work for the team that managed the hr apps matt kurio s facebook picture after i had been on one of the finance apps development teams for a couple of years in 2004 one of another developer came to my cube one day in a sort of panic i think my manager jim steele may have suggested asking me if i could help the developer s name is nilesh sangani my dear friend nilesh sangani nilesh was supporting a number of finance applications at the time and something terrible had happened that morning there was this application called ccmart the cc in ccmart stood for cost centers this application allocated expenses to cost centers each week back at the power plant we all knew that whenever we worked on a piece of equipment in the plant that the work order was tied to a cost center that corresponded to each specific piece of equipment that way the company could track the costs associated with each piece of equipment over time this is very helpful as it helps the electric company run more efficiently as long as someone is proactively monitoring these cost centers so when nilesh explained to me that ccmart is the tool that allocates the expenses to cost centers i understood the importance of it at the plant we used sap to track all the cost centers automatically from the work orders and the timecards sap logo what nilesh told me next made me wish i kept some eyedrops in my cubicle this was because after he told me the problem my eyes started circling around and around in my head in disbelief or well maybe it was close to lunch and i was hungry here is what nilesh explained to me now listen closely when the ccmart job was run that morning at the part where all the employees cost centers and salaries were loaded from the excel spreadsheet a blank spreadsheet was accidentally loaded when that happened every employee in the company was terminated in the ccmart application did you catch that an excel spreadsheet is loaded into ccmart each week with all the employees cost centers and salaries in case you are wondering yes i am talking about microsoft excel you know the spreadsheet program in microsoft office an excel spreadsheet was used to load all the employees salaries into this application what had happened was another application that produced the spreadsheet didn t finish running and so the spreadsheet was just blank so why should that matter well ccmart was an in house application and the person that created it was no longer around no one really knew how it worked but evidently when a person s entry drops off of the spreadsheet from one week to the next ccmart figured that they must have left and so it terminates them are any of you smiling right now while you think about this i know i am since ccmart was written by someone who is no longer around and no one knows how it works then no one knew how to fix this problem this was a catastrophic problem as it fed the employee cost center expenses into the oracle financial application now everyone was terminated nilesh had tried to reload the correct spreadsheet with all the employees in it into ccmart but that didn t work it didn t re activate the employees so he was stuck there was no blueprint in my mind i went back to the time when i was at the power plant and the overhead crane at the intake wasn t working i looked around and we didn t have a blueprint that showed how the controls worked i thought well maybe it s up on the overhead crane control box so i went up to look an overhead crane the gray panels on the far side is where the controls were found i found the relays and controls but there wasn t anything that told me how it worked so i went back to the electric shop and picked up a yellow notepad and a pencil and headed back up to the overhead crane after studying all the wiring and relays this is what i concluded intake crane control circuit this is called a ladder diagram once i knew how the crane was supposed to work i could quickly fix it i also created an official blueprint for it so that anyone in the future that needed to know could look at that looking at that picture brings me back to that day i remember it was sunny but not too hot standing on the overhead crane above all the condenser circulating pumps i could look out over the plant grounds and the intake channel sometimes when i m dreaming or just thinking i will place myself at various places around the plant and just look around and remember when i used to work there anyway back to nilesh and the ccmart dilemma nilesh gave me the log in information to the ccmart database i logged in and looked around some people when they design an application they will name things in a cryptic way so that it is harder to tell how something works they figure that it is added security that prevents someone from duplicating their design there was a little bit of that in the database as some of the table names were a little vague after clicking around through the different database table looking at the data i thought i found the table that was causing the issue it had the list of employees in it along with some other information in one column there was a date as i scrolled down through the data i noticed that a number of people had today s date listed other people had older dates it looked like there was an admin user and that user s date was blank i think i saw another entry that was also blank it occurred to me that this date column may be the termination date of each employee since there were a lot of entries with today s date so i quickly created a backup table that only had the ids for each of the employees that had today s date along with that date then i created an update statement that would remove the dates for everyone that had today s date from the database table that looked like it could have blank dates once i committed the update sorry about all the database terms i asked nilesh to check it out and see if the application was good nilesh went to his desk and came back a minute or so later with a big smile on his face everything had been fixed nilesh thought i was a genius because i could look at a database i had never seen before and scroll through the data and go zip zip there and everything was fixed needless to say nilesh and i became good friends that day he worked at general motors when i was working there today nilesh is the ceo and cofounder of a company called scopebound the people that interviewed me for those it jobs back when i was back in college may not have thought that being after receiving a master s degree for religious education mre from loyola university in new orleans in 1993 when i was working as an electrician at the power plant in north central oklahoma it took some time before i was able to use the skills i learned about teaching adults about 50 of my education was geared towards teaching adults that was why when the position of trainer opened up at our plant i thought it would be a no brainer that i would qualify for that job i described what happened in the post power plant train wreck to sum it up the job of power plant trainer was given to with boring i also held a class where i taught any of the workers in the maintenance shop who were interested how to use microsoft windows here is a picture of the manual i created my instruction manual on how to use windows in 2001 when i moved to round rock texas to work for dell i figured that no one knew my background and wouldn t think that i would be a teacher that was true at least at first things began to gradually change during the summer of 2002 dell decided to help out the high school teachers in austin by teaching them how to use the different products in microsoft office that is word excel and power point i don t remember if we taught them how to use access or not i don t think we did because a typical teacher doesn t really need to create their own databases even before i was helping ashley thomas with a project someone must have looked at my resumé i remember my manager coming to me and saying that since i had experience teaching our vice president ben hasan wanted me to be on the team that went to the austin high schools to teach teachers how to use microsoft office applications i wondered how they found out about that this was something new i thought this would be very neat our vp ben hasan our first meeting to discuss how we would do this was held across town in an office building that was close to michael dell s house compound in the room where we met there was one of those long wooden tables with fancy comfortable chairs you see in movies where all the executives or mob bosses are meeting to discuss important things it was all very fancy they gave us shirts to make it official because you know it s not official unless you have a shirt dell i t school volunteer we found out that there were two schools we were going to help one was the rich school on the southwest side of austin the other one was the poor high school just off of highway 290 east of i 35 it seemed that after teaching at the wealthier school we didn t deem it necessary to go back because the teachers there were pretty well versed in microsoft office apps the poorer school was quite different i remember when we first met with the people at the reagan high school which today is called northeast early college high school they were excited to have us teach the teachers they warned us that some of the teachers would be resistant to learn something new it was just the way it was we decided that we would focus on one application at a time first we would teach word then on a separate occasion we would teach excel and finally we would teach powerpoint word and excel were taught in a computer lab the teachers sat there like students as we walked around behind them helping them learn the different shortcuts and features of word and excel we taught them how to use mail merge so they could create one document in word and use excel to merge in the name of each of their students when it came to powerpoint i knew this was going to be a bit more challenging to some i wanted to teach the class using a projector since using powerpoint would be replacing the overhead projectors they were using with transparencies because of this we held that class in the high school library where they had a projector and screen i was the main teacher for powerpoint evidently word had spread at dell about my final powerpoint presentation at the power plant i don t know how they knew unless some maintenance supervisor jim something at the plant had called dell to complain about me sending copies of the presentation to the other plants after i left see the post power plant final presentation when the teachers were filing into the library one older man said i don t need to learn this i never have needed it and i don t need it now he sounded just like jasper christensen when i was giving him his 360 assessment what this teacher didn t know was that i had brought a secret weapon with me it was going to be so compelling that this teacher was going to be shocked into learning powerpoint before the class was over as i started the class i set my secret weapon down next to the projector and set it in motion then i began teaching all about how to make slides and use wordart and how to animate things so they would slide onto the slide from different directions i taught them how to copy slides and group objects on the slide together so you could move them around in a group as i was doing this my secret weapon was busy ramping up a surprise that would change everything i let the secret weapon continue working quietly then suddenly the grumpy old man that didn t want to be in the room yelled out hey how did you do that yep he had been shocked you see i had brought my daughter with me that was in the 7th grade at the time i had used her years earlier when i was teaching the switchman training classes at the power plant using powerpoint here is a pic...
