of the middle ages by norman f cantor i ve largely forgotten the book this was so long ago but a passage that i read in it about the first crusade and particularly about the people s crusade impressed me very much at the time the passage in question indeed it seems that urban had underrated the effect of his proclamation at clermont he was not prepared for the immediate organization of the various groups of knights now clamoring to set out for the holy land and it was not until the following year that the first crusade began certainly no one at the papal court anticipated the explosive effect of urban s appeal at clermont on the rhenish cities before the french knights could set out on their expedition a people s crusade consisting of unruly mobs from the slums of the rhineland urban communities blindly set out in the general direction of the holy land led by popular preachers such as peter the hermit they committed pogroms on the prosperous jewish populations in their own cities
