years that the selectors added tate because they thought maclaren would not dare pick him and therefore stick to the team they wanted in life worth living fry suggested that lord hawke would not allow schofield haigh a more obvious selection to play as it would have weakened his yorkshire team that was already providing three test players but the initial teams announced for the second and third tests contained four yorkshiremen although the fourth was left out of the final eleven on both occasions and it should again be stated that despite these confident claims fry was not at the meeting additionally tate was having the best season of his life and was high in the first class averages most criticism of tate s selection came with the benefit of hindsight there was little complaint beforehand quite the opposite fry had a little more to say about tate in life worth living when we got to manchester and rain was in question archie maclaren decided to leave out george hirst of all people a strong bat and prospectively the most dangerous wet wicket bowler we had so fred tate whose forte was medium pace bowling on fast dry wickets though no doubt he was useful in county cricket on wet ones was included instead of george hirst because archie maclaren was pardonably annoyed with lord hawke for as he said foisting fred tate on him as a wet wicket bowler archie said martin hawke chose fred tate for a wet wicket and it will rain once again it cannot be repeated too often fry was not there nor was he entirely correct in his retrospective judgement for example hirst was a faster bowler and not a wet wicket specialist he was also out of form in mid 1902 furthermore fry s assessment of tate written in 1939 is simply inaccurate as fry himself had written in 1899 tate was a wet wicket specialist who required conditions in his favour to be effective and he had suggested in 1901 that tate might have represented england had he played for a stronger county but by the time he wrote his autobiography fry was an eccentric figure who liked to play up to his reputation and his audience his earlier views of tate seem more generous and closer to reality but fry s writing in life worth living did as much as anything to cement tate s reputation as a blunderer out of his depth the result of all this selectorial intrigue was that tate made his test debut at old trafford for the fourth test on 24 july 1902 in very wet conditions australia chose to bat hoping to score as many runs as possible before the pitch began to dry and became impossible victor trumper played one of the greatest innings in test history to score a century before lunch taken when australia were 173 for one from 33 overs in this passage tate bowled six overs for 28 one over went for 13 but he escaped the worst of the punishment and others including rhodes whose ten overs went for 52 and f s jackson who conceded 46 in seven overs were handled more roughly after lunch when conditions heavily favoured the bowlers tate bowled a second spell of five overs for 17 runs but rhodes and bill lockwood did most of the work eventually splitting all ten wickets between them australia were bowled out for 299 tate s final figures were 11 1 44 and the main complaint was that he had bowled a little too short but hardly disastrously so despite a century from jackson england struggled on a pitch that continued to be difficult and australia took a 37 run lead on first innings tate was left on five not out but in such conditions that meant little batting again australia were soon in trouble losing three quick wickets to be 10 for three late on the second afternoon then came the moment which sealed tate s fate with the score on 16 the australian captain joe darling hit len braund in the air to deep square leg the fielder was tate he dropped the ball darling went on to top score with 37 and his partnership of 54 with syd gregory eventually broken ironically by tate was crucial england struck back to leave australia 85 for eight at the end of the day but the dropped catch had shifted momentum yet as several people pointed out in later years tate usually fielded at slip not in the deep why was he fielding there at all when an anonymous pelham warner wrote about the game in the times in 1919 he related a story he had heard that both jackson and ranjitsinhji had offered to field in the deep instead of tate but maclaren had refused warner s article provoked a reaction from maclaren who set out his detailed defence in a long reply he could not he said have put ranjitsinhji in the deep because he was dead lame this was almost certainly untrue but may have been a valiant protection of his close friend who was in no fit mental state for cricket as he was on the verge of bankruptcy maclaren also insisted that jackson an amateur had expressed a preference for fielding close to the wicket if that might have explained why he was forced to put tate in the deep maclaren also wrote about the circumstances of the catch that placed tate in a crucial but unfamiliar position at a key moment darling was left handed and his partner gregory right handed when gregory took a single owing to the field maclaren wanted to set five men had to cross the field maclaren explained how he placed lionel palairet another amateur in front of square leg as he believed that was where darling was most likely to hit and had tate at fine leg but according to maclaren the bowler len braund a somerset team mate of palairet asked him to swap the two men around and he agreed not everyone remembered events that way braund later recalled asking for palairet at square leg rather than tate but perhaps the reality was lost in all the years of discussion in maclaren s account tate got behind the catch and had the misfortune to drop it no one was more sorry for tate than myself and although i had the greatest respect for tate as a bowler it was in my opinion far too late in his career to ask him to play for the first time in so critical a period in the test games it was a convoluted explanation which suggests that maclaren had spent a lot of time thinking about the point perhaps it betrayed a guilty conscience at having erred in his choice of fielders certainly he was keen to absolve himself of any blame in a tactical mistake incidentally c b fry in his fantasy version of the selection meeting in life worth living claimed to have argued against his county team mate tate s selection on the grounds that he could only field at slip on the final morning australia added just one more run before tate took the last wicket having figures of 5 3 7 2 leaving england needing 124 to win on a pitch still difficult after overnight rain england reached 68 for one before collapsing amid great tension england eked out runs but lost regular wickets during one of several breaks for rain the writer for the manchester guardian reported the following day spectators were heard discussing tate s batting ability it was darkly whispered that tate had some time or other been known to make his fifty the rumour spread abroad and quickly made the round of the pavilion and the stands and soon one was plied with questions as to whether or not tate had ever made a hundred against anybody he had but not at first class level the evidence was not forthcoming concerning the doings of our last man in all this in the way of cheerfulness when the ninth wicket fell for 116 eight runs were still needed rhodes was still there even then he was a solid batsman but the last man was tate after a rain interruption which can only have increased his nerves tate edged a lucky boundary before being bowled by a ball which has been variously described as swinging keeping low or being a quicker delivery australia won the match by three runs and took a 2 0 lead in the series with one match to play rain followed almost immediately which would have washed out the match had they still been playing tate was not particularly fairly blamed for the loss some in the crowd jeered him as he walked off len braund later told john arlott that tate was inconsolable in the dressing room braund tried to cheer him up and told him to go and get his money it s only a game that had no effect so braund went with him to manchester train station while they were waiting tate was recognised and had to endure glances and nudges they got on the train together and according to arlott braund said cheer up fred it ll all be forgotten in a week or so tate denied that would be the case but told braund i ve got a little kid at home there who ll make it up for me that little kid was maurice tate who went on to be england s leading test bowler in the 1920s a nice story but an unlikely one particularly as it was told by braund or arlott with the hindsight of maurice s success however there is some evidence that fred did tell maurice from a young age that he would make up for the dropped catch i ve got a a week after the game a sympathetic passage appeared in cricket because he missed a catch at a critical moment at manchester and did not make the few runs required when he went in last in the fourth innings of the match poor tate has come in for more adverse criticism than has perhaps fallen to the lot of any other man in the history of the game the author defended tate from accusations that he had single handedly lost the game and was outclassed pointing out that two for 7 in the second innings was not bad for a test match and the missed catch the best fieldsmen in the world have done the same thing lots of times as to criticism that he had been nervous the writer replied who in the name of goodness would not be nervous in his first test match especially when he has to go in to make runs for the last wicket at the most momentous crisis in the history of the game many others would make a similar argument for years afterwards even fry conceded in 1939 that tate had been unlucky he blamed hawke for the defeat and suggested the game should have been called lord hawke s match yet the fourth test of the 1902 series will always be remembered as tate s match and wisden was less inclined to sympathy the match report criticised the inclusion of tate even if he was not blamed for the loss on the morning of the match another blunder was committed tate being played in preference to hirst the condition of the ground very soft and slow after a lot of rain offered some excuse for the course adopted but it meant playing a bowler pure and simple in preference to a first rate all round man and the result proved anything but happy most subsequent discussion has largely laid the blame for the defeat at the door of maclaren and the selectors incidentally tate later wrote on more than one occasion that maclaren was the finest captain he played under despite the disappointment of old trafford tate maintained his form taking eight for 145 against middlesex and eight for 28 against hampshire he was picked for a team representing the players to face the australians at harrogate he took three for 79 in an innings defeat and for the south of england to play the australians at bournemouth he took two wickets in the first innings and six for 48 in the second to bowl australia out for 91 his team still lost but perhaps it felt like a kind of personal redemption not that it repaired the damage of tate s match tate s 153 wickets for sussex that season were a new county record and the team came second in the county championship he finished the season with a total of 180 first class wickets at 15 71 despite his failure in the test he averaged 15 with the bat and scored two fifties in one match sharing a partnership of 160 in 70 minutes with ranjitsinhji for the ninth wicket against surrey by any measure it was the best season of his career yet it would only be remembered for that one match if the 1902 season was both a high point and low point for tate he was never quite the same bowler afterwards it would be easy to pin the decline solely on his disappointment about his single test match but that would be lazy and based on no evidence perhaps his last seasons simply reverted to the norm of his earlier career but it is equally possible that playing in a fractious team riven with internal issues not least the apparently waning interest of fry and ranjitsinhji and the latter s eccentric captaincy contributed to the decline fitness too could have been a factor a photograph taken by george beldam in 1905 shows that tate had gained weight since the turn of the century and at some point he acquired the nickname chubby or maybe the brighton pitches were just too flat in 1903 tate dropped away badly he took 72 wickets at 22 94 and wisden said that he was comparatively harmless compared to his form the previous year particularly in wet conditions that should again have suited him the fall continued in 1904 when he managed 51 wickets at 21 25 he played until june in the 1905 season taking just 13 wickets at an average of 46 07 and he was dropped never to return to the sussex team the committee at the time was ruthless with its long suffering bowlers he was 38 years old which was not old for one of his pace tate finished his career with 1 331 first class wickets at 21 55 having played 320 matches he also scored 2 952 runs at 9 58
