these fans conveniently overlook the issues of adultery marital misery jealousy insanity murder and revenge which is what the story is actually about in the same way in searching for the 1948 version online i came across many fans declaring tender to be one of their favourite books and praising the romance of the love story the glamour of the riviera scenes etc all tending to gloss over the fact that at the centre of the book is a survivor of family sex abuse and incest correct me if i m wrong and i may be wrong but my impression is that during my lifetime certainly in the last 25 years since the turn of the century society as a whole public discourse has become steadily more and more sensitive to the issue of child sex abuse family abuse surviving abuse and so on there s an article on the subject more or less every day in the guardian as well as stories on radio 4 in the wider press on the telly just yesterday i was reading about the retrial of harvey weinstein the trigger for the metoo movement today i read a review of a documentary about rape victims so i feel like i read or hear something about these issues pretty much every day and have been doing so for years as a result it feels to me i may be wrong that society as a whole is much much more sensitised to issues around child abuse sex abuse rape and so on than it was even ten years ago in this modern context it s impossible to read about the family rape and abuse of nicole without it creating massive shockwaves for me it dwarfs everything else was the same kind of thing taken as seriously 100 years ago when the novel is set or in the 1940s when cowley published his edition and wrote his introduction which i don t think even mentions the abuse and incest or in the 1960s when penguin published his edition how seriously should the reader take it should we let it spoil our appreciation of the novel should we compartmentalise it as historic attitudes which we note disapprove of and move on on this as on the question of his fissile prose style i found myself overwhelmed by contradictions and can t settle on one view 3 blacks black people crop up in many of fitzgerald s stories in stories set in the north they appear as servants butlers and chauffeurs in stories set in the south they are more prominent as people in the street workers in the fields and so on but they re always background to the main story which of course concerns white folk of fitzgerald s class this makes the depiction of the black milieu abe north gets mixed up in in paris and which leads to the murder of mr peterson of stockholm all the more puzzling and insofar as the main characters themselves don t understand what s going on doubly bewildering it would be easy to criticise fitzgerald in the modern woke manner for playing to the trope of black people as criminals and probably as easy to pick on other details of vocabulary or description for example to be scandalised when dick tells nicole look here you mustn t get upset over this it s only some n scrap 1 25 i ve redacted the offending word it s printed in full in the text but to me the question is why he chose at this crucial moment when rosemary discovers nicole s mental frailty to make the trigger for her little breakdown this incomprehensible little sub plot about black murder someone with a better overall grasp of the themes of the novel may be able to explain or to unpack the dense knot of issues which i can feel is crammed into this bizarre incident but i m not clever enough to properly unravel author wisdom the novel is the most successful modern literary form because it is so infinitely flexible one of its many possible contents is wisdom writing where an author can sound off about human nature to their heart s content it s a rare novel that doesn t try to ground its story and comments on its character on sweeping generalisations about human nature about men or women marriage or whatever compared to what i ve just been discussing some of them are incredibly simple and innocent unlike american trains that were absorbed in an intense destiny of their own and scornful of people on another world less swift and breathless this train was part of the country through which it passed 1 3 on being young and lovely and rich and america it was fun spending money in the sunlight of the foreign city with healthy bodies under them that sent streams of colour up to their faces with arms and hands legs and ankles that they stretched out confidently reaching or stepping with the confidence of women lovely to men 1 22 on england an englishman spoke to him from across the aisle but he found something antipathetic in the english lately england was like a rich man after a disastrous orgy who makes up to the household by chatting with them individually when it is obvious to them that he is only trying to get back his self respect in order to usurp his former power 2 16 the arrogance of the english upper classes he had long concluded that certain classes of english people lived upon a concentrated essence of the anti social that in comparison reduced the gorgings of new york to something like a child contracting indigestion from ice cream 3 10 the british empire nicole glanced again at the woman across the deck she was fragile tubercular it was incredible that such narrow shoulders such puny arms could bear aloft the pennon of decadence last ensign of the fading empire 3 5 english diction circa 1928 lady caroline answered him in short sentences spotted with the terminal what the double edged quite the depressing cheerio that always had a connotation of imminent peril 3 5 talk she had achieved the elusiveness that gives hidden significance to the least significant remarks 2 21 nicole about herself it had been a long lesson but she had learned it either you think or else others have to think for you and take power from you pervert and discipline your natural tastes civilize and sterilize you 3 7 sort of conclusion i can see why it took fitzgerald nine years to finish tender is the night and even then it was not really finished as cowley s comprehensive restructuring indicates both versions have their pros and cons so in a sense it will never be finished tender is a treasure trove of thousands of shiny pieces of jewellery and just as many clunky or strange failed sentences in zurich there was a lot besides zurich the roofs upled the eyes to tinkling cow pastures which in turn modified hilltops further up so life was a perpendicular starting off to a postcard heaven it is a melting pot of themes which vary from the large to the gargantuan many of which are bigger as i hope i ve indicated than fitzgerald himself realised feminist issues about women s subjection and agency issues around male abuse of power issues around sexual abuse and survival issues around mental illness and treatment issues around the casual slurring of homosexuals or the deployment of racist tropes around black men and lowlife crime the list goes on for these reasons it s far bigger more troubling and problematic than any of his other novels as i said towards the start on paper it s a simple story about a couple who fall in love get married then drift apart and end up getting divorced but it packs so much onto that simple scaffold that i found reading it and then thinking about it a wonderful frustrating troubling and mystifying experience andré le vot s summary tender is the night might be called the swan song for fitzgerald s first style baroque sumptuous soaring bravura le vot p 308 contemporary songs early in their affair as dick comes to see nicole while she s still at the clinic she plays him hit songs of the day on a phonograph she s smuggled into her room fitzgerald summarises the effect of such cheap sentimental music in a paragraph which amusingly runs together the lyrics of such songs into one continuous blur they were in america now even franz with his conception of dick as an irresistible lothario would never have guessed that they had gone so far away they were so sorry dear they went down to meet each other in a taxi honey they had preferences in recognise delivering either the shock of recognition or the sense of wonder of something vividly new being conjured into existence by words i find it addictive not the big stuff of the narrative arcs the florid characters or the clever symbolism sometimes random details just leap out and grab me thus nicole at the hairdressers the coiffeuse in her white uniform faintly sweating lip rouge and cologne reminded her of many nurses and for a moment i am there in a hairdressers on the french riviera in 1928 seeing this fine detail and sharing nicole s memories of her old nurses or i m somewhere in textland where words conjure imaginings feelings tug at memories create new memories out of nothing out of squiggly black lines on a white page transported magicked that s why i do it summary money
