concerned about catching a sexually transmitted infection but this is a fiction and from an age of sexual innocence so the narrative is concerned with the complex of emotions which go through her head and heart the sailors departure the scene is crystallised by the nattering of two package tourists on the balcony below which comically irritates post coital tommy but there s a louder racket going on and tommy wrapped in a towel peers over the balcony and sees two american sailors having a fight cheered on by their mates and shrieking local poules prostitutes then there s an enormous booming sound which is the siren of the american warship in the bay and the sailors make their way to a boat at the quay which is swiftly followed by a knocking on the door and two excited poules want to borrow their balcony to wave goodbye to their departing men departing men all change changing of the guard the men in nicole s life are changing places dick is being relieved nicole realises an affair with tommy may not be forever but having sex with him signals the overshadowing of dick her freedom a new life tommy takes her back to the villa the kids the staff etc need their mother and employer but everything has changed dick returns to a changed nicole dick turns up the next day he had been with rosemary had driven her to some train station he explains to nicole that he had to find out where their relationship stood in the event there was nothing there rosemary is still a girl but if he expected sympathy he was wrong nicola has changed when dick asks her what she s been up to and she mentions tommy barban s name he flinches even though she lies that nothing happened the climax dick loses nicole later feeling sorry and apologetic nicole seeks dick out where he s sitting alone on a steamer chair looking out to sea troubled but when she goes to touch him he flinches away and this triggers an argument the final argument he finds himself satirically talking about her as a case and about curing her and she infuriated speaks some home truths i think this is the crux of the entire story so i ll quote it in full you re a coward you ve made a failure of your life and you want to blame it on me while he did not answer she began to feel the old hypnotism of his intelligence sometimes exercised without power but always with substrata of truth under truth which she could not break or even crack again she struggled with it fighting him with her small fine eyes with the plush arrogance of a top dog with her nascent transference to another man with the accumulated resentment of years she fought him with her money and her faith that her sister disliked him and was behind her now with the thought of the new enemies he was making with his bitterness with her quick guile against his wining and dineing slowness her health and beauty against his physical deterioration her unscrupulousness against his moralities for this inner battle she used even her weaknesses fighting bravely and courageously with the old cans and crockery and bottles empty receptacles of her expiated sins outrages mistakes and suddenly in the space of two minutes she achieved her victory and justified herself to herself without lie or subterfuge cut the cord forever then she walked weak in the legs and sobbing coolly toward the household that was hers at last dick waited until she was out of sight then he leaned his head forward on the parapet the case was finished doctor diver was at liberty 3 9 the episode of the two drunk ladies but it s a complicated narrative especially in these final passages you d have thought it could conclude here but for some reason fitzgerald now adds the ludicrous incident of the two drunk posh ladies being arrested at 2am the night following this disastrous conversation the phone rings and it s the poste de police in antibes ringing to tell him that they re holding mary north and the aristocrat dick insulted caroline sibley biers he gets dressed and drives over to discover that they were playing some silly posh prank and dressed up as french sailors had picked up a couple of local girls when the girls discovered the truth they called the police one is a local poule who can easily be bought off but the other comes from a good family and is kicking up a fuss long story short dick manages as so often before as with the case of the dead black guy in the paris hotel manages to sort everything out in this case with the shrewd promise of a hefty bribe to the chief of police in fact the whole incident drags on and on because even after she s released bloody lady caroline refuses to pay up the money dick promised the police chief and refuses to be grateful to dick like the incident of the shooting on the paris railway station this is so random as to be rather marvellous maybe it s supposed to indicate how remnants of the old dick still flare up for those who knew him to mourn over like a lot of these other incidents it has the effect of concealing or blurring the schematicness of his decline and fall and it s purely enjoyable in itself it could be a standalone short story in fact cowley in the notes to the penguin edition says it was a last minute addition to the text and based on a true story at the barbers the clinching scene in worldly terms is when dick and nicole go to get their hair cut at the same barbers a married ritual in the mirror nicole glimpses tommy walking by who stops and comes in and goes to the men s section then he and dick join him they are going to have it out but rather than some melodramatic punch up they just walk to the nearest posh hotel take a table sit outside and talk it over what s interesting is nicole s mixed emotions she wants it to be over but she bridles at the way tommy takes command of the situation and claims ownership of her in graphic terms let it be understood that from this moment he said i stand in the position of nicole s protector until details can be arranged and i shall hold you strictly accountable for any abuse of the fact that you continue to inhabit the same house dick makes some sarcastic remarks but then pays and walks away very symbolically disappearing into the crowd dick s departure the day before he leaves dick spends with his children who have god knows figured very little in the story as a whole he tips the gardener and the maid he drops his bags at cannes station then decides he wants to take a last look at gausse s beach the scene of his former triumphs and heyday even mary north bests him here nicole and baby spy him when they come out to sunbathe dick sees them but ignores them and finds himself talking to mary minghella who he had such a fight with but who he saved from gaol it s a symbolic conversation because he finds that somehow now she is lecturing him once upon a time he commanded controlled and supported everyone now he has fallen so far that even a nondescript like mary north is lecturing him it s meant to indicate the depth of his fall and her speech also makes it explicit your friends still like you dick but you say awful things to people when you ve been drinking i ve spent most of my time defending you this summer 3 12 momentarily dick exercises some of his old power he bestirs himself enough to start flirting with mary who with great psychological realism i thought enthusiastically bites she has always loved him he knows he could have her but inside him an uncontrollable mirth is bubbling up laughter at the whole thing his reputation this life everything what a joke so before he actually bursts out laughing and alienates her forever he abruptly says he has to leave as if acting on morality rather than mockery and cynicism he staggers slightly as he stands as in the scene with the waterskis he is not as young as he used to be coda the last chapter of the 1934 version book 3 chapter 13 pulls right away from any immediate action for the narrator to describe the aftermath it is short and hard just three little paragraphs it tells us that nicole marries tommy he s very tolerant whenever she reminisces about good old dick she hears the dick is practicing general medicine in some small town in new york state but he got entangled with some local girl and had to move in his last ever letter to her he says he s settled down in a new town and has someone to keep house for him then his final note saying he d moved to an even smaller insignificant town his psychological dwindling is symbolised by the shrinking size of the communities he lives in until it shrinks so small that it vanishes and the long gruelling narrative is over characters these are snapshots and key quotations relating to the characters as we meet them skewed towards their first appearances in book 1 dick diver wanting above all to be brave and kind he had wanted even more than that to be loved 3 10 on the riviera chief of his little society of partygoers they reached the hotel and rosemary walked a little behind him to admire him to adore him his step was alert as if he had just come from some great doings and was hurrying on toward others organizer of private gaiety curator of a richly incrusted happiness 1 17 dick has a kind strong mouth wherever he goes he inspired parties by making everyone feel safe and relaxed a father figure sports a gold headed cane and a pince nez save among a few of the tough minded and perennially suspicious he had the power of arousing a fascinated and uncritical love 1 6 it was themselves he gave back to them blurred by the compromises of how many years 1 12 dick said no american men had any repose except himself 1 12 dick came out of his one room house carrying a telescope and looked east toward cannes in a moment nicole swam into his field of vision whereupon he disappeared into his house and came out with a megaphone he had many light mechanical devices 1 6 the divers made her want to stay near them forever 1 6 dick is in rosemary s view tall and strong obvious wish fulfilment by fitzgerald who was neither i ve read plenty of blurbs and comments pointing out that dick bears many of fitzgerald s qualities is a projection of his ideal self well yes and no what struck me more was that dick is a man trapped in an immature conception of love and romance a part of dick s mind was made up of the tawdry souvenirs of his boyhood the same thing keeps happening to him over and over the phrases he uses to describe nicole s young freshness in 1917 are applied just as sincerely 8 years later to rosemary on the riviera on this reading it s dick who is ill victim of an overwhelming desire to help or to be admired trapped in a compulsion to act out the same romantic tropes with a succession of women refusing to grow up he was in love with every pretty woman he saw now their forms at a distance their shadows on a wall 2 18 after book 2 has given us the flashback to 1917 and dick and nicole falling in love and we return to the present i was struck how the descriptions of nicole and rosemary young fresh innocent etc are interchangeable they are both daddy s girls his characteristics are he is irresistible to women he sometimes kisses women he shouldn t like a client but he is hopelessly compromised by one simple central fact he married his patient he fell in love with and married one of his psychiatric patients surely that breaks every rule in the book was it perfectly permissible in fitzgerald s day would it be allowed now surely it is a plain case of the abuse of power and responsibility it leads to the dualism in his views of her that of the husband that of the psychiatrist a doubled conflicted identity nicole is well aware of this when they have fights it isn t a husband and wife arguing or rather it s more than that it can always end up being a physician correcting his patient as nicole cries out it s always a delusion when i see what you don t want me to see 2 15 as if all this weren t bad enough there s another revelation which knocked me right off my perch when he s still a partner in the clinic nicole receives a letter from the mother of a fifteen year old girl it was the mother who was ill and in the clinic while the daughter stayed to be near her and upon a single occasion he had let the girl a flirtatious little brunette ride into zurich with him upon her request and in the evening had brought her back to the clinic in an idle almost indulgent way he kissed her later she tried to carry the affair further but he was not interested and subsequently probably consequently the girl had come to dislike him and taken her mother away fifteen he kissed 15 year old daughter of a mental patient not just as an adult man but as the physician to the mentally ill mother surely this man should have been arrested locked up and struck off any kind of register all the summaries i ve read of the novel completely fail to take these issue into account that he acted profoundly unprofessionally and immorally in ever letting nicole fall in love with him let along marrying him and that he then carried on flirting with patients or their relatives in a scandalous unprofessional and illegal way isn t this the real issue rather than the sad decline of a charismatic hero which the novel is painted as nicole diver née warren you know you re a little complicated after all oh no she assured him hastily no i m not really i m just a i m just a whole lot of different simple people 3 8 nicole is 24 when the novel commences in 1925 the granddaughter of a self made american capitalist and the granddaughter of a count of the house of lippe weissenfeld they have two children lanier and topsy she was the most attractive woman rosemary had ever met in book 2 we travel back eight years from 1925 to 1917 to find nicole barely 18 in the mental clinic at zurich but falling helplessly in love with young dr diver as rosemary was to do 8 years later in dick s eyes she smiled a moving childish smile that was like all the lost youth in the world 2 5 she was the first morning in may she was a carnival to watch nothing had ever felt so young as her lips nicole finding their table and glowing away white and fresh and new in the september afternoon 2 10 but also as things become more complicated she led a lonely life owning dick who did not want to be owned 2 13 the central issue of the entire novel for me is the fact that she was sexually abused by her father that rings out like an air raid siren to me every time i remembered it it eclipsed everything else in the story surely this is the over riding point once i learned this one seminal fact i found it hard to forget or put to one side nicole s madness a schizophrêne is well named as a split personality nicole was alternately a person to whom nothing need be explained and one to whom nothing could be explained it was...
