burnout why compassionate people have lost their empathy for others how to manifest with the moon coping with the unexpected death of a friend exercise for empaths let s get physical 5 gift giving ideas that protect an empath s energy the power of self acceptance why being you is more than enough august 27 2026 august 27 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc psychology boundaries healing life love mental health personal growth self care have you ever looked in the mirror and thought maybe if i were a little taller more organized had better hair knew how to fold a fitted sheet then i would be happy you can fill anything in that blank as long as you are looking outside yourself self acceptance will elude you what is self acceptance self acceptance isn t giving up on improving yourself it s saying i m worthy as i am while i am still growing comparison is a sneaky little thief the minute you look at someone else and believe they have it better you are already losing social media is built for comparisons it is easy to believe everyone else has their life figured out one person is selling more books than you another is losing ten pounds someone has captured the perfect rainbow picture meanwhile you re celebrating finding your car keys when you believe others have it better or easier than you you are making up stories in your head the truth is we aren t seeing the internal struggles others experience and they have them your quirks make you who you are maybe you laugh too loudly or shoot milk out of your nose maybe you slurp your coffee maybe you tell the same stories over and over these little quirks are what make you memorable the world doesn t need a copy of someone else or who you think someone else is the world needs the authentic you it s about progress not perfection imagine speaking to yourself the way you d encourage your best friend incorporate these phrases into your vocabulary i made a mistake okay what can i learn from this instead of ughh i have ruined everything write yourself a letter first express all you are going through uncensored the next step is to answer that letter from the perspective of a compassionate friend what would they say to you how would they remind you that you are human and humans aren t perfect once you are finished with the letter put it away and open it again when you need a loving reminder small ways to practice self acceptance celebrate one thing you did well each day instead of a to do list create a success list notice harsh self talk and begin to replace it with compassionate loving thoughts laugh at your mistakes you are only human the bottom line self acceptance isn t about pretending or being perfect it s about recognizing you re enough as you are that s a pretty amazing place to be take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is an amazon bestselling author licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach dedicated to supporting compassionate helpers she is the author of i 6 lessons i ve learned about self care from my cats july 27 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc psychology boundaries cats coping skills empath healing mental health pets self care writing living with cats reminds me that self care doesn t have to be complicated they don t apologize for resting stretching asking for what they need or finding a sunny spot to bask in here are a few valuable lessons i have learned from my boys rest without guilt cats don t earn naps they just do it anytime anywhere i find my boys sleeping on beds couches and even the floor people often believe we have to push through exhaustion before we deserve a break rest is not a reward it is essential self care remember rest is necessary for our emotional mental physical and spiritual health the next time you need a rest take one without explanation or apology be curious cats investigate the world with wonder watching my boys look out the window in wonder helps me appreciate nature more they love watching squirrels hang from a bird feeder or a hummingbird coming in for some nectar curiosity invites us to stay open to new experiences different perspectives and unexpected opportunities for growth be open to questioning and exploration protect your peace when cats feel overwhelmed they seek quiet one of my boys loves socializing with guests while the other prefers to watch from a distance this is a gentle reminder it s okay to step away from noise overstimulation and constant demands shut off your phone take a social media break or shut off the news creating space to recharge and replenish your energies isn t selfish it s healthy stretch cats stretch after resting usually shaking out one leg and then the other we can do the same by gently moving our bodies throughout the day a few mindful stretches help release tension and can reconnect us with ourselves if you prefer more structure take a yoga class ask for connection when a cat wants affection it lets you know my boys often come up to me head butting my leg or meowing they remind us even independent souls need others we don t have to handle everything alone reaching out for support is a sign of wisdom not weakness connect with a friend ask for a hug or join a social group live in the present moment cats aren t worrying about a to do list if they had one it most likely would say rest be curious protect my peace stretch and connect with others the most important lesson they teach is reminding us to be present in the moment notice the warmth of the sun the fresh air a quiet cup of tea or a peaceful walk mindful moments such as these are where life happens self care isn t always found in grand gestures often it s in the simple choices you repeat each day resting when you re tired moving your body protecting your energy staying curious and allowing yourself to receive care perhaps the cat world has been teaching us all along that slowing down isn t falling behind or failing it s about reconnecting and coming home to ourselves take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is an amazon bestselling author licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach dedicated to supporting compassionate http www lisahutchison net 21 comments the hidden cost of being the strong one june 26 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc psychology relationships boundaries empath grief healing life love mental health relationships selfcare are you the one others call during a crisis or the one who keeps everything together when life gets difficult most likely you are known for being reliable and dependable you show up solve problems and support others often without considering yourself being called the strong one can feel like a compliment behind that outward showing of strength is often a cost that few people see what is the strong one the strong one is often the family member everyone depends on the friend who always is available to listen the caregiver who puts everyone else first or the professional who has it all under control you were the easy child because you never asked for anything and the person who feels they must handle their problems alone the pressure to have it together when others view you as strong they may assume you don t need support you can handle anything you re not affected by stress or you ll always be available you may be carrying too much if you feel emotionally exhausted experience burnout have difficulty asking for help or knowing your own needs and wants feel resentful toward those you support or feel guilty when you prioritize yourself why strong people often ignore their own pain for many being strong became a survival strategy early in life perhaps you learned that your needs came second others depended on you showing emotions wasn t safe or being responsible earned you approval when i was a child i didn t share my feelings or my thoughts with anyone inside of myself i had all these questions and anxieties swirling around on the outside i appeared like a well adjusted child i was independent and figured things out on my own in my 20 s i told my mom how i experienced growing up and she said she had no idea she figured i was okay and told me she never had to worry about me this seems like a compliment but i remember feeling sadness because my pain wasn t seen by my family or even myself i was good at identifying or anticipating others feelings but not my own i had to learn how to identify and express my feelings to others some people didn t like that especially when i used to seem so flexible and easy going when i set boundaries many people in my life ghosted or rejected me i see now that i am much better off living the life i do holding all of those feelings in is a lot of work today i love helping people connect with and express their feelings protect their energy by setting boundaries and increase their self care i understand the importance of all three true strength true strength is not about carrying every burden alone it includes setting healthy boundaries asking for help acknowledging difficult emotions taking time to rest and recover and accepting support from others give yourself permission to receive it can be challenging to open your arms up to receive when you are accustomed to being a giver you can start small by journaling a journal writing practice will help you acknowledge what you are feeling what you need and what you want notice that inner critical voice that drives you to do or give more if you are having difficulty feeling worthy of receiving or expressing your needs to others consider short term counseling or coaching you can learn how to raise your self esteem and communicate assertively it can be uncomfortable reaching out but it is essential to your own health and well being conclusion being the strong one doesn t mean carrying the weight of the world by yourself real strength is found in balance expression and having limits this means learning to care for yourself while you care for others remember you deserve support rest and compassion just as much as the people who depend on you take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is an amazon bestselling author licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach dedicated to supporting compassionate helpers she is the author of i fill my cup a journal go as planned june 2 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc manifestation psychology coping skills healing life manifestation mental health mindfulness personal growth self care there are times you do everything right you have planted the seeds set your intentions taken action and things did not go as planned life has a way of bringing in the unexpected you could experience a changed relationship a cancelled event a health diagnosis or a missed opportunity this past month i had four disruptions that were all beyond anyone s control what if the unexpected isn t an inconvenience or interruption to your journey but rather a part of the journey itself what can you do in moments of unexpected uncertainty this is not a time to jump back into action but rather to reassess and wait you need to allow your mind and body time to process here are some concrete steps you can take ground yourself unexpected or unplanned changes can feel unsettling and leave you off balance when this happens give yourself permission to pause and reconnect with the present moment grounding practices such as walking barefoot on the grass or sand focusing on your breath or connecting with the five senses can help restore a sense of calm and stability these simple mindfulness practices can help quiet mental noise reduce stress and soothe the nervous system as you become more centered you can access your inner wisdom gain clarity and recognize the guidance available to you answers often emerge when the mind and body are calm and relaxed practice acceptance accept what is and allow yourself to release what cannot be controlled surrender to what is and release give yourself permission to feel your emotions and name them whether it is disappointment anger loss or sadness write about these feelings talk about them with a trusted friend or counselor acknowledging your feelings is an important step toward healing and understanding acceptance does not mean giving up it means making peace with the moment so you can move forward with greater clarity and strength rest and be open sometimes plans don t work out because they are not meant to and sometimes it simply isn t the right time there is our timing and divine timing delays can reveal new perspectives highlight what needs to change and guide us toward a better path trust the process stay open to guidance and allow clarity to unfold trust even when things don t go as planned keep faith in your journey you are supported and your life has purpose even if the path ahead isn t fully visible yet be open to clarity and guidance trusting that they will come when the time is right take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is an amazon bestselling author licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach dedicated to
