thankfully i don t have to work many saturdays anymore as we have staff that actually wants to be there on inarguably the most boring day of the week sadly other people want time off so i don t always get to have the full weekend to be the most unproductive version of myself it was me working the mid shift 2 pharmacists 1 competent tech working the opening shift 1 new hire that i really think will work out well working the closing shift and amanda working the closing shift me telling you what shift everybody was on foreshadowing ominous foreshadowing we got busy on the register i was on a call with a patient and both the competent tech and new hire were up there but needed another cashier we have 4 registers up there now because we get so busy pharmacist amanda i need you to go run a register to get the line down please amanda no i don t really feel like it this is a bold declaration especially considering that any pharmacist is by default the boss of any tech i finished my call and went up to the register because as it turns out the pay doesn t change if i m putting the prescriptions in the bag or putting stock bottles back a couple hours before close we d sent the competent tech home so it was me the new hire and amanda i m showing the new hire how to verify the drug order so we have it on monday when she s again asked to go up front no no explanation no i have to put this label on and i ll be there nothing but no once in a shift is bad enough but twice i shuddered in arousal as i thought of the write up she was sure to get then the pharmacist pulled a great move in front of her she asked me if i d mind closing i knew what was about to happen and because i m a petty little man fueled by spite i said of course i don t mind pharmacist amanda since you re not being cooperative today you can go home amanda but i need hours pharmacist maybe think of that before refusing to do your job there was more protesting but at that point it was too late the rest of the shift we had a grand total of 4 people show up to pick things up so it was prime training time and a really stupid hill to choose to die on fast forward to today i showed up early because despite knowing better i volunteered to be in early to cover vacations how dare my coworkers not be at work and when amanda showed up she didn t even get her smock on before the manager had her in the shot room for a meeting she didn t come back to the pharmacy and now i have 2 extra shifts because she has unexpected time off which is manager speak for she has 3 days off to think about what she s done we just ran short a person today before somebody does some math and realizes that 2 is less than 3 this brought me unspeakable joy despite now working 2 extra days this week that i previously had earmarked for naps and yard work the manager then went around to every tech and asked nicely if they thought they answered to just him or to every pharmacist it was one of those easy pop quizzes that every kid except 1 got a 100 on you re a tech the pharmacist runs your life at work simple this was the best shift maybe ever no singing no dancing no dead weight to carry and the new hire is had both a dentist and a doctor come to school on a regular basis the dentist would have us all stand in a circle with our little toothbrushes and show us how to brush and correct our technique the doctors would give us general health assessments and then have the teachers contact our patents and essentially peer pressure them into getting us any health intervention we needed my parents only reluctantly got me glasses because they knew the teachers would judge them if they kept seeing me sit in the very front row and still squint to see the chalkboard so i m biased shamebats apr 10 the only times i ever remember seeing a dentist or doctor as a child was at school i m quite healthy physically and i m very grateful for all the care i got from the various professionals who cared about my well being and development more than my actual parents did we had free healthcare including dental mind you my parents just couldn t be bothered when my brother as a teenager asked our mother if she could take him to his orthodontist appointments which he d already arranged for on his own she basically told him she didn t feel like it and he had to take the bus if i could improve anything about that system i d take it even further and make it so kids could see a doctor and get meds treatments therapy tests disability aids etc without having to rely on their parents as well i shouldn t have had to put up with being bullied and guilt tripped about the family finances and the time investment needed to take me to the optometrist every time i needed new glasses shamebats apr 10 some parents would not take care of their children even if they were given all the time and the resources mine are a great example of that my mother stopped working and became a homemaker when i was in kindergarten my father worked from the garage and was also always home they had a car and our village even had a bus that would come once or twice an hour that would take you to the next two bigger
