maintain that the washington post contributed a lot to my political and historical understanding while i was growing up and has continued to do so well into my old age when i was a kid my staunchly conservative parents subscribed to the evening star the other major washington newspaper at some point perhaps sensing that the star was dying they switched to the post they recognized quality when they saw it even when they disagreed with the paper s political slant doesn t my decades long loyalty and theirs give me a small stake in its future a billionaire of course can get away with full scale demolition as demonstrated all over my home city by our marauding president but there is something even more destructive in taking an axe to a venerable institution like the post and amputating huge parts of it several sections including book reviews and the sunday magazine have been consolidated or eliminated altogether from the print version bezos has also threatened to phase out the sports section probably the most popular feature donald graham the previous publisher has protested that sports is what he turns to first when he gets his paper and he is not alone for now sports in print still survives although bezos did fire several of the best sportswriters in the business he generously allowed a few of them who were already in milan to cover the 2026 winter olympics to continue doing so although just barely we can only hope there are enough reasonable voices left to convince him that deep sixing sports altogether would be a horrible idea no matter how much money it would save after purchasing the paper in 2013 bezos was a fairly hands off owner until donald trump s second inauguration which he ominously attended it was around then that he suddenly decided the paper should be a money maker like his other businesses that strategy required a consolidation process and more importantly not upsetting trump too much the paper s content began to diminish and hands off the wacko president became the standing order on the opinions page leading to the departure of several respected editorial writers besides that it s not unusual these days to come across startling proofreading errors which rarely happened before most of the editors were let go all in all it s definitely not the woodward and bernstein model of old the idea of a public trust is evidently lost on someone with only dollar signs in his eyes as many good people departed subscribers also began leaving in droves doesn t this bother the billionaire at all i m not quite ready to join that exodus i only get the print version on sundays and make do with the digital news the rest of the week thankfully the digital post retains a few features that have been axed from the print version including voices like kathleen parker and george will are allowed to get away with occasional trump put downs parker recently referred to don trump as if he were don corleone while will has described trump s intellect as bereft of information disorderly and easily swayed many of us have our fingers crossed that the news part of the operation will continue to be free of constrictions thankfully we are still able to read about trump s continuing election delusions and other statements he makes without evidence such as declaring that the iran war and the economy are going just great so we can say whatever i think of donald trump on any given day ranging from irritation to boiling anger i must admit that the man has a certain mystical talent he may be an idiot but he s also a genius in a way there has to be something magical about a man who gets away with absolutely every outrageous thing he says and does the more egregious he gets the more devoted his followers become his utter shamelessness is his shield he has so many stunning qualities stupidity childishness corruption incompetence hypocrisy dishonesty immorality that are regarded as virtues by his crowd of worshipers he has even proven he can go to war for no particular reason without losing significant numbers the trump devotees being passionate and loud wield power out of proportion to their numbers enough to intimidate many lawmakers and pundits who surely know better what will it take for those with a modicum of critical thinking ability to wake up and end this madness i guess the real question is whether there is anything trump can do that might burst the magic bubble at last can there possibly be a last straw a bridge too far no criminal can hide forever even jesse james and al capone were finally stopped one through double crossing and the other through government ingenuity is it possible for the worst american president in history to go too far now there appears to be a slush fund scandal shades of nixon who famously had one of those to cover his watergate expenses at least the current version is enough of a scandal to get some members of his own party roiled especially in the senate it seems trump sued the irs because a contractor released tax returns filed by himself family members and his company if you ask me it was high time the public knew how little he and his family paid compared to the rest of us but the disclosure embarrassed his highness so he extracted 1 776 billion a cutesy patriotic number from the already beleaguered agency then he announced his intention to use this money dubbed the anti weaponization fund to reward some of his most ardent supporters especially those attacked by the evil corrupt biden adminstration to those capable of understanding irony this is really rich it s probably the most openly corrupt thing he s ever done and that s really saying something if he succeeds with this scheme trump will probably use some of the money to reward the january 6 2021 marauders that with his goading and encouragement attacked the seat of government the plan is ingenious and shameless but how smart is it it will remind everyone of the january 6 riot and trump s role in it which is a major reason why he belongs in prison himself and he will be fighting some aroused members of the police which won t be popular with conservatives incidentally it may not have been the smartest move to torpedo the careers of two prominent senate republicans john cornyn of texas and thomas massie of kentucky through primary endorsements of more extreme candidates if those two find their backbones during the time they have left in office it might encourage others to find theirs and if the bubble finally bursts as a result won t that be a
