add so much to the vase marie finally finished a top that had been simmering for a long time judey finished a quilt of valor top i absolutely loved this cat quilt and am thinking about making one for my 2 year old granddaughter someone completed a beautiful one block wonder in my favorite color this one is being made for the maker s teenage son a lovely sampler of course there were shopping trips to nearby quilt shops look at the beautiful pieces of fabric sue bought to go with the gorgeous border she had previously purchased infinite possibilities here i really enjoyed seeing quilter extraordinaire rainy stevens at the retreat she was hand quilting a quilt given to her by a dear quilting friend when she passed away so it s very meaningful and full of emotion for her the fabrics are from the cocheco line that came out in 2001 and are reproductions of those made in the 1800 s by the cocheco mills in our guild s town check out rainy s fabulous hand quilting here s rainy with another project she brought with her you must enlarge the next photo to see the stunning details on this quilt her handwork is incredible every stitch on the quilt is by hand so what did i do at the retreat i finished week 8 s fancy four patch blocks and got to see the 32 of them on the design wall staggered as they will eventually look i appliqued all 20 of the march squircles and got to see how all 140 of them 40 to go looked together a bit closer i started working on the second right side border for whimsical vases some examples of the fussy cutting for some of the pieces and i also did some hand quilting on winterberries i m getting close to finishing whew that s a lot of images to absorb on this post i m going to finish with a few earthy delights at the retreat we were within easy walking distance of the beach the snow has now almost completely melted and the path to the pond is navigable once again buds are not yet opening here in northern new england but faded beauties from past seasons are no longer snow covered i gladly participated in a local no kings demonstration last saturday it was cold and breezy but our group picked a sunny spot and we were glad for the freedom to express ourselves wishing everyone a happy spring and happy stitching creating be kind be grateful and cherish each day gladi march 17 2026 fancy four patch update and more plus the wheel of chance spins in my favor march 17 2026 gladiporsche 26 comments greetings dear readers i ve been working steadily on my 4 blocks per week for the ffp challenge and that s been eating up a fair amount of my quilting time because the pieces are small and a bit fiddly to work on but the key is that i m enjoying it without further ado here are 2 weeks worth i am thoroughly enjoying rummaging through my stash of reproduction style fabrics and choosing combinations for the blocks a unifying factor is the yellow color palette i m using for the background fabrics that really makes the blocks for me anyway sing one of my favorite fabrics of all time is this yellow from the cocheco mills line that came out around 2002 i don t know that the photo does it justice but it is a beautiful buttery warm yellow and the above is all i have left do you hoard your favorites over the years and mourn their passing here s another one that i only have a small piece of left from 2000 apparently yellow one of my favorite colors was a prominent color at quiltcon this year check out the blog of cassandra beaver the not so dramatic life for a post sharing 12 quilts from the show which feature the color yellow her blog is excellent speaking of quiltcon i have been enjoying photos from the show on instagram and in blogs winners are on the modern quilt guild website and i love that there is a lot of hand quilting being done on modern quilts it s usually big stitch but that s fine just so happy to see the art of hand quilting being carried on my guild is doing a basket raffle penny sale to raise money for charity so my bee is providing a basket with a leisure time theme with games puzzles treats etc and i am making a 20 inch square table topper to contribute the top is done and now i need to layer and quilt it the penny sale is next month i made a backing out of asian style fabrics for here comes the sun the scrappy meets thrift sew along from last year next step will probably send out for long arm quilting i am getting close to completing the hand quilting of winterberries and decided my next hand quilting project is hexagon stars i originally thought i would have it machine quilted but currently every stitch in the quilt is made by hand so how could i not hand quilt it i need to send it out for long arm basting and i have started gathering threads for the hand quilting of in my opinion nothing beats gutterman 30 wt silk which is strong yet glides easily through the fabric i buy mine online from red rock threads in nevada the first whimsical vases border is almost done only 2 of 54 pieces still to do i celebrated my 77th birthday this weekend the weekend started with a fantastic gathering of our music group and fabulous music next day al took me to the currier museum of art followed by a delicious meal at an excellent restaurant the currier is small but they have a nice mix of different kinds of art there was a lovely childe hassam there were some hudson river school landscapes some early american paintings and furniture enlarge the photo click on it to appreciate the designs on the furniture and there was modern art as well this one reminded me of what we are currently seeing in modern quilts and there were 2 quilts one was from gee s bend the other is by a modern artist who paints on embellishes old quilts here s a photo of a quilt i recently saw in an old quiltmania magazine that circular block that looks like a fan is called the wheel of chance it speaks to me right now because the wheel of chance spun for me last week and i won i experienced a medical emergency and passed out while driving my car but i did not get hurt and the damage to the car is so minimal i don t have to do anything about it i was feeling fine when i got into the car but within a few minutes started to experience nausea and abdominal pain this was quickly followed by feeling hot sweaty and light headed i realized i needed to get off the highway and there was a gas station ahead on my side of the road just as i made the turn into the station i passed out and the car going slowly because of the turn went down the driveway into a snow bank i regained consciousness after 30 60 seconds but felt really ill and folks at the gas station called an ambulance to make a long story short i spent 28 hours at the hospital i was diagnosed with a treatable gastrointestinal infection but was tested while i was there for every possible cause of passing out cardiac neurological etc everything was good i m on an antibiotic and have felt fine for days however i keep thinking how lucky i was that i didn t pass out while still on the highway or that i didn t run into another car or person or a gas pump at the gas station there was a guardian angel watching over me the episode certainly brings to fore my mottos of being grateful and cherishing each day be kind be grateful and cherish each day gladi february 28 2026 testing project updates february 28 2026 gladiporsche 21 comments greetings dear readers we are having some internet computer problems at home and with this post i am trying something new posting by phone just to see if that works i m warning you that if this comes out garbled that s the reason if i m able to figure out how to post photos and publish this will be a quick project update i have a photo of all 120 of my squircles i felt that i needed to look at them all together before i do next month s batch to see if i needed to start choosing more specific colors or color combinations or values turns out i like the random mix of colors and i have an almost equal number of blocks with light squircles on dark backgrounds and vice versa and i like that too so i will continue with what i m doing for the next 3 months i m thinking of calling it traveling the silk road and considering adding a border here are week 4 s blocks for the fancy four patch challenge closer i m really enjoying selecting fabrics for this no butterflies going the wrong way this time i spent several hours over the past 4 days getting started with the second right border of whimsical vases even though i m not quite finished with the left border i got all the shorter pieces of vines sewn on and the major job of making templates and choosing the fabrics and cutting out the pieces my sewing room looks like a bomb went of in it during this stage some of the fabrics i used now i m ready to get the final long central vine on and start the applique this border is more complicated 110 pieces whereas the left border had only 54 that s because many of the flowers on the right have several individual petals well so far so good in composing this post i m going to keep going and see if i can add a few earthly delights we still are having frequent snow days and the ground is covered with a thick layer of the stuff i took these next 2 from the windows of my house from the window in my sewing room i think i had better stop here and see how the publishing of the post goes if all goes well looks like i may have another option for posting if my ipad is acting up be kind be grateful and cherish each day gladi february 17 2026 updates a new skill earthly delights february 17 2026 gladiporsche 11 comments greetings dear readers the cold and snowy weather we ve been having has kept me indoors a lot leading to good progress on several projects i completed the darting birds top it is 43 5 inches square when i started it a month ago my intention was to make a baby quilt for charity donation now i love it and it s going to be hard to give away i especially like the different light florals in the background and did you notice there are birds in the border too this now goes into the to be quilted pile and i will most likely still give it away many thanks to elizabeth at occasional piece blog link on upper right for this fun project the pattern is free on her site i am keeping up with the fancy four patch challenge having completed blocks for weeks 2 and 3 and week 3 notice another butterfly turned the wrong way in this next one this is the second one out of 12 blocks and for now i m leaving them that way my 20 squircles for february are completed i need to put all 120 of these on the design wall and study them for color distribution and potential placements before i make the march batch i learned a new skill this year i am a member of my guild s committee responsible for creating our annual raffle quilt for 2027 every year we raise thousands of dollars for charity by selling raffle tickets throughout the year at various venues the pattern chosen for the 2027 quilt is mosaic star we ve already purchased the fabric and we meet next week to start cutting i decided i needed to make a practice block before hand so that i am fully familiar with exactly how to make the block and i m so glad i did believe it or not i had never learned how to make half rectangle triangles hrt s my solution was to foundation paper piece that shape the trick is to trim these correctly and lo and behold stitchery has an excellent tutorial on their web site on how to do it without a specialty ruler turned out to be easy here s my practice block using some tilda fabrics i ll update you through the next few months as we get this thing made once my february squircles were done i got back to the appliqué for the whimsical vases border last post i showed this section with the pieces with the paper templates on top and here is that section now done i continue to slowly make progress hand quilting winterberries earthly delights this is the snow and ice version ️ we keep getting new snow and it s not warm enough to melt any of it yet i can tramp through the snow to the pond but haven t readers i couldn t resist taryn at reproquiltlover has hosted a quilt along based on an antique quilt each year since 2023 i missed the first year but participated in 2024 the tiny nine patch challenge and last year scrappy meets thrift each was such an enjoyable experience that i had to join this year s fancy four patch challenge it s actually a 9 patch block but the 4 corners and center patches are 4 patches and 2 of those 4 are half square triangles the half square triangles finish at 3 4 inch the block finishes at 4 1 2 inches my first 4 practice blocks these will ultimately be set with alternate plain 4 1 2 inches blocks of a background fabric to make a quilt like the antique go to taryn s instagram site reproquiltlover to see it and closeups of the blocks we need to make 152 of the pieced blocks and she suggests we try for 4 per week for 38 weeks one thing i love about her quilt alongs is that she is not at all rigid about how many blocks you make how long it takes you to make your quilt what size it is what fabrics you use etc the object is to enjoy the process and make what you like it took me a while to get my bearings and figure out what fabrics i want to use i was pretty sure i wanted to use reproduction fabrics although i ve since seen some great blocks in modern fabrics brights asians etc in the photo above i made the lower 2 blocks first i liked them but wasn t that happy i tried next with the blue and white and wasn t thrilled with that either the green with the gold background finally spoke to me i knew i wanted my blocks to have yellow gold as the background color and i was on my way the above blocks go into the orphan block pile and here are my actual first 4 blocks the 4 patches with the hst s look like butterflies did you notice that one is
