ial has a number of benefits it begins by powerfully conveying the charisma and subtle power which dick wields but then slowly introduces a certain murder mystery element as we the readers share in rosemary s slow realisation that something s wrong at the heart of this glittering scene all this very artfully sets the scene for the drastic flashback to eight years earlier to give us the couple s back story book 2 it s at this point when you re wondering how rosemary will react and what the outcome of the dead body murder story will be that the 1925 narrative abruptly ends and book 2 takes the reader all the way back to 1917 and a youngish dr diver pursuing his studies in psychiatry we learn that dick studied at johns hopkins from 1914 went to vienna in 1916 to see the great dr freud and is now in zurich aged 26 he is doing research under the aegis of dohmler s clinic on the zurichsee and is a colleague of the slightly older franz gregorovius here we learn about nicole over the previous 8 months dick had received 50 letters from one of dr dohlmer s patients young nicole warren who he had briefly met looking dashing in his army uniform the letters are quoted extensively in the narrative the early ones are clearly demented but when the armistice comes in november 1918 they begin to calm down and become more sane the text then goes further back to describe how 18 months previously an american gentleman living in lausanne a mr devereux warren of the noted warren family of chicago had brought his 16 year old daughter nicole for doctor dohmler to treat nicola was obviously very disturbed convinced that every man she met was trying to seduce her and had made accusations about the family valet making improper suggestions with the result that the poor man was sacked before her family realised she was making the same accusation against everyone it s only on a reluctant visit several weeks later and under sustained questioning from franz that this mr warren reveals the truth the truth that in one sense really lies at the heart of the novel he tells us that nicole s mother died when she was 11 and so he became her mother and father they used to sleep in the same bed for comfort and then he had sex with her just once and he bitterly regretted it immediately afterwards but this is the root of nicole s problem she was abused by her father this is a massive bombshell from this point onwards this revelation overshadowed everything else in the text at a stroke the novel changed from being some account of rich americans in france to being a novel about child abuse and incest the backstory is done quite clunkily in fact i came to dislike book 2 book 1 has plenty of oddities of phrasing and style but book 2 began to feel to me actively bad a lot of the sentences are elaborate and almost meaningless the truth was that for some months he had been going through that partitioning of the things of youth wherein it is decided whether or not to die for what one no longer believes book 2 chapter 5 in passing we learn that the couple live off 3 000 a year mostly nicole s money since her family it turns out are loaded and baby reveals the family think it would be good if nicole married a doctor dick realises the family think of him as the tame doctor in question he will in effect be bought for her the style of book 2 often feels forced and pretentious book 2 chapter 10 is a little bit avant garde or modernist as it covers the period of the divers pre marriage settlement wedding travelling having one baby then another a bout of post natal depression her long relapse following topsy s birth then finding and buying the villa diana at tarmes and acquiring a social circle all this done as short paragraphs depicting nicole s thoughts and fragments of dialogue relating to each situation it s like the old movie trope of having loads of pages flying off a calendar to depict the passage of time a filmic cliché referenced in fitzgerald s later pat hobby stories about hollywood the eight years between 1917 and 1925 are hurried through in little more than two pages so that by book 2 chapter 11 we are back in the present of 1925 a few weeks after the incidents in the hotel in paris what happened after the murder of mr peterson well dick arranges for rosemary to move to another hotel to avoid scandal then he and nicole say a hurried goodbye and catch the train back to the riviera they live in an atmosphere of unresolved tension following nicole s breakdown in the paris hotel bathroom then go to switzerland for the winter skiing here they meet baby warren and her harem of englishmen she tells dick the family has sold an old family property and made 300 000 which needs to be divided between her and nicole and invested somehow very abruptly book 2 chapter 14 suddenly jumps forward dick is now 38 if he was 26 in 1917 and 34 in 1925 it must be 4 years later i e 1929 the year of the crash except that in 2 20 he tells rosemary that they are living in the year nineteen twenty eight anyway we learn that for 18 months he has been part owner and practitioner at the clinic he s set up with franz one of the best appointed in europe he bought half of an existing clinic with 200 000 of nicole s money nicole opens a letter from a mother a patient furious that dick seduced her daughter aged just 15 and staying at the clinic to be near her sick mother she believes it he denies it they take the children to a fair nicole freaks out and runs off in the car on the way home she grabs the wheel and steers it off the road if they hadn t happened to have banged into a convenient tree the car would have hurtled downhill killing them all nick puts nicola in care and has to take a break he travels to germany meets tommy barban who s had a head operation then learns his father died so takes ship to new york and accompanies the body to his father s home town in virginia he returns on a liner where he bumps into mckisco now a successful novelist pasticheing the work of greater writers with great commercial success in rome he finds rosemary she s in town shooting a movie attended by her young would be lover collis clay when dick visits rosemary in her hotel room within minutes they re lying on the bed kissing she s 22 and he s 38 daddy s girl indeed she takes him to the film set and does some work they drive back to rome have a stylish lunch and that afternoon he takes her virginity but then they fight she s obviously been having a fling with her leading man a would be valentino and suddenly she wishes he hadn t come hadn t disillusioned the fine memories she had of four years ago and he s sad about it too i guess i m the black death he said slowly i don t seem to bring people happiness any more that evening he refuses a telegram inviting him up to her room again and instead goes out on the town and gets blind drunk when taxi drivers refuse to bargain with him he slaps some this leads to his arrest and even then he might have got off except that in the police station he foolishly punches a plain clothes detective who he mistakenly blames for snitching on him so the assembled carabinieri set upon him beating him to the ground kicking him breaking his nose and a rib it s nicole s sister the ever resourceful baby who goes to great lengths waking up the american consul and forcing an american lawyer to intervene who manages to get dick released from jail the implication is that after this public humiliation dick s incipient alcoholism increases and he begins to go downhill andré le vot s 1979 biography of fitzgerald tells us that this incident actually happened to fitzgerald exactly as described right down to punching a plain clothes detective and getting beaten up he and zelda stayed in italy for a couple of months over the winter of 1924 to 25 they were both ill and disliked the stroppiness of fascist officials and fitz ended up hating italy he wrote to his agent harold ober i hate italy and the italians so violently that i can t write about them for the post le vot page 180 book 3 dick this isn t faintly like you excuse me again i m not much like myself any more several years later 1930 and back at the clinic a client angrily withdraws their son from the clinic claiming he reported smelling alcohol on dick s breath this is one of the pretexts which his partner franz uses for squeezing him out of the clinic he tells him he needs to take a leave of absence in the event dick sells his share of the clinic and he and nicole go back to live in the south of france book 3 consists of a series of incidents or scenes which are designed to demonstrate dick s decline at his peak he orchestrated the lives of his charmed circle like prospero now we are shown him mishandling social situations losing his touch giving way to rudeness and sarcasm completely unlike the old dick so the affair of mary and the unclean bath their old friend mary north has married an immensely rich man to become contessa di minghetti confusingly the husband is of indian stock and his family name is hosain the incident concerns a bath for his children his son comes to tell dick and nicola that he was made to get into a bath of dirty water used by one of the hosain children dick gets cross and calls in one of the hosain maids gives her a hard time and orders her to change the water clean the bath and run clean water for his son what he doesn t realise until a furious mary comes to explain it to him is that the maid is actually one of hosain s sisters very high caste and irreparably insulted at being orders around like that so mary her husband and entourage leave in high dudgeon the affair has its comic side but is symptomatic of how dick is losing his touch the episode of golding s yacht despite the fact they ve become quite a reclusive couple after a row dick insists on taking nicole out to the motor yacht of millionaire t f golding anchored in the bay he s drunk when he arrives and proceeds to get really drunk and insult the guests specifically a bony english poetess lady caroline sibley biers the same conclusion is repeated again and again nicole is realising that his awful faculty of being right seemed to have deserted him at last 3 6 rosemary reappears nicole is annoyed when they learn that rosemary is back she s among an entourage of people her own age i e the younger generation one afternoon dick makes a fool of himself trying to pull off stunts he managed with ease two years earlier they re water skiing and dick insists on not only standing up on the ski board but having one of the young guys sit on his shoulders as he does it three times he tries it and fails more humiliatingly each time nicole was annoyed everything he did annoyed her now dick disappoints rosemary on the boat in conversation with some state department people on the boat the name of the ubiquitously renowned baby warren had occurred and it was remarked that baby s younger sister had thrown herself away on a dissipated doctor the phrase disturbed rosemary though she could not place the divers as living in any relation to society where such a fact if fact it was could have any meaning yet the hint of a hostile and organized public opinion rang in her ears dick irritates rosemary dick goes beyond disappointing rosemary he actively irritates her when over dinner he analyses the role of the movie actress in a generally disparaging way but the same speech also irritates nicole because she correctly sees it as a form of cack handed flirting nicole could stand no more she stood up sharply making no attempt to conceal her impatience 3 7 nicole pulls away fitzgerald has staged all these events so as to dramatise nicole s progressive alienation from dick and her growing sense of confidence and freedom as soon as she s left the beach where dick is pointlessly flirting with rosemary nicole relaxed and felt new and happy her thoughts were clear as good bells she had a sense of being cured and in a new way her ego began blooming like a great rich rose as she scrambled back along the labyrinths in which she had wandered for years she hated the beach resented the places where she had played planet to dick s sun 3 7 dick is blanked in another tell tale incident dick and nicole are sitting with rosemary in a bar overlooking the beach when mary north appears when she sees the divers she cuts them but when she notices rosemary she comes over to talk with her very ostentatiously ignoring dick and nicole his days at the heart of things are well and truly over now he s barely on the periphery of things with each new diminution of dick nicole is thinking new vistas appeared ahead peopled with the faces of many men none of whom she need obey or even love 3 8 it suddenly struck me that one way of seeing it is that nicole has grown up in a way that dick hasn t he is still a boy he still wants to be loved and admired and the centre of everyone s attention but that young man glamour can never last and you have to adjust to a much more minor place in the world nicole is successfully doing this dick is disastrously failing next morning nicole wakes up to find a note from dick saying he s gone inland for a few days she knows he s gone with rosemary to see if he can revive his old affair with her and is bitter about it tommy calls fortuitously as in a hundred thousand mills and boon romances at that precise moment the phone rings and it s the man who s held a torch for her so long tommy barban he comes round they have lunch ostensibly like any other social date but then they stand close and kiss they ve crossed a line nicole sleeps with tommy tommy asks her to get rid of the maid and children she says she can t so he suggests a drive and they motor off along the coast road to cannes but before they even get there they stop in a cheap hotel rent a bare room and here in a room overlooking the sea she has sex with tommy her emotions are well depicted namely dread and anxiety and even in the giving she feels like a generic body for tommy is an extremely weather beaten man of the world a mercenary who openly describes having had many whores personally i would be extremely concerned about catching a sexually transmitted infection but this is a fiction and from an age of sexual innocence so the narrative is concerned with the complex of emotions which go through her head and heart the sailors departure the scene is crystallised by the nattering of two package tourists on the balcony below which comically irritates post coital tommy but there s a louder racket going on and tommy wrapped in a towel peers over the balcony and sees two american sailors having a fight cheered on by their mates and shrieking local poules prostitutes then there s an enormous booming sound which is the siren of the american warship in the bay and the sailors make their way to a boat at the quay which is swiftly followed by a knocking on the door and two excited poules want to borrow their balcony to wave goodbye to their d...
