150 short stories as well as numerous articles for magazines in the 1960s penguin books published all the novels four collections of short stories and this volume which combines five autobiographical pieces and five short stories i ve summarised the five essays in a separate blog post in this blog post i look at the five short stories numbers 6 to 10 in the list below autobiographical pieces pat hobby himself 1940 stories 6 gretchen s forty winks 1924 roger halsey is an advertising designer six months ago he left a steady job at the new york lithographic company and went into business for himself result is he s working long hours he s been married for 3 years to gretchen and they have a baby maxy the gist of the story is that roger has several important pitches in the pipeline so he s going to have to work even harder than before and tells gretchen they re going to have to stay in and not socialise so that he can work 12 hours every day for the next six weeks but if things come off he promises they ll move to a better house in a better neighbourhood she insists they keep their last social engagement dinner with george tompkins a successful interior decorator at this dinner george explains his theory of the importance of having a good work life balance and proceeds to describe in detail his typical working day which is structured so as to give him hours of relaxation such as playing golf in the late afternoon this sets up the dynamic for what follows for roger does as threatened really work round the clock regularly designing his advertising layouts till 2 or 3 in the morning christmas comes and goes without him really being aware of it meanwhile he is vaguely aware that george tompkins has taken his wife horse rising a couple of times and took her skiing in the mountains roger is working flat out and is scratchy with his wife this explains why when george drops round for dinner roger first of all takes his work up to the bedroom to continue but gets irritated by the way things won t lie flat or still on the covers then comes downstairs and gets into an argument with george and threatens to throw him out by force after he beats a hasty retreat the young married couple have a bitter fight roger banning gretchen from seeing george gretchen insisting she s going riding next day amid all the shouting she says she hates him and wishes she could throw all his work in the fire fitzgerald lures us into believing that roger really is going to have the breakdown that george and gretchen predict later that same night he feels the veins in his head bulging he the loud wind howling outside makes it feel like the house is falling through space when he opens the door he sees a giant wolf there we are made to believe he really is on the edge of a violent breakdown as a result of the big fight with gretchen he sleeps on the sofa but next morning he feels better he just knows he has 24 hours more work to do on his projects and wants not to be disturbed by fights with gretchen so he goes to the pharmacy as soon as it opens and gets a dose of sleeping powder back at the house he mixes it into gretchen s morning coffee and takes her breakfast in bed half an hour later he checks and she is unconscious rather oddly he gathers every single pair of her shoes into his suitcase cuts the telephone wire and sets off to the office from here he sends round the artwork for his advertising projects to the client a h g garrod then starts the wait for the response as to whether he ll get the gig or not during the day he is visited by the landlord of the offices who demands his rental payment and seeing the state of roger warns him not to work too hard or he ll have a breakdown which makes roger angrily tell him to leave that night he sleeps on the office sofa next morning garrod phones him in person and says the art work is magnificent and he s got the job he wants all of it and as much more as his office can do victory roger is vindicated that s sort of the first punchline but there are two more when roger gets home he wakes up gretchen who is understandably groggy but still cross with him she insists she s going out riding with george today thursday but roger shows her the newspaper and tells her it s not thursday it s friday she takes some telling and then feels odd that she seems to have lost a whole day somewhere then a few minutes later she calls him because she can t find a single one of her shoes suddenly she s overcome with fear that she s losing it and suddenly small and scared asks roget to take care of her so roger sends their servant to fetch the doctor dr gregory comes and gretchen worriedly tells him she thinks her nerves are giving out she thinks she s on the verge of a collapse gregory tells him she s not the only one and tells the astonished couple that he s just come from attending george tompkins seems that old mr work life balance has himself had a nervous breakdown seems it actually took a lot of work living that balanced life and in the end he snapped the doctor concludes by telling gretchen she s been under a lot of strain recently and needs rest and sleep she needs a good forty winks roger asks the doc what about me i ve been working pretty hard lately but the doc cheerfully pats him on the back and says he s never seen him looking so well at which george looks away and smiles he s won he s been proved right despite george gretchen s and the reader s expectations so in the end it s a pretty corny joke a gag an ironic reversal gretchen s forty winks online 7 the last of the belles 1929 it was a time of youth and war and there was never so much love around 1 an army story fifteen years ago the narrator andy was in the army in a regiment which is sent to a training camp in the south near the town of tarleton in town he bumps into a college friend called bill knowles he explains that in the high society way all fitzgerald chaps have there are just three girls worth considering in the town ailie calhoun and sally carrol happer bill thinks he s going out with ailie and asks if he can hand care of her over to the narrator but when they go round her house a few days later they discover she is being courted by an aviator named canby she gets rid of canby and invites bill and the narrator in the narrator is immediately struck by how she exemplifies the classic southern belle there she was the southern type in all its purity she had the adroitness sugar coated with sweet voluble simplicity the suggested background of devoted fathers brothers and admirers stretching back into the south s heroic age the unfailing coolness acquired in the endless struggle with the heat there were notes in her voice that order slaves around that withered up yankee captains and then soft wheedling notes that mingled in unfamiliar loveliness with the night she dismisses the narrator but not before straightening his tie in a flirtatious way two weeks they re together on her verandah her lying in his arms and he trying to get a kiss that great desideratum of fitzgerald s young men she is a canny small blonde 19 year old that summer he takes her to lots of parties to vaudeville and the country club to barbecues and rowdy watermelon parties but he never gets to kiss her and in the end resigns himself to becoming her confidante instead he watches as she searches among the tall young officers for the eligible bachelor she requires lieutenant canby doesn t take this gracefully aile tells the narrator that canby threatened that if she snubs him he ll fly his plane high then turn off the engine and plummet to his death news gets round that bill is coming back from wherever he s been they all attend another dance for the first time ailie dances passionately with the narrator they go outside and might have been trembling on the brink of actually kissing when an aviator appears round the verandah and asks them if they ve heard what happened to horace canby his plane crashed something went wrong with the engine ailie staggers against a car and weeps andy goes to fetch bill and tells him ailie needs to be taken home but first she makes andy swear to tell no one what she told him about canby and once he has she suddenly adopts a mocking tone and andy realises what a good actress she is and what a schemer 2 he finds out more about her when he tells another girl that ailie s only kissed a few men the girl falls about laughing and informs him of ailie s real track record by now he ought to be shocked and despising her manipulativeness but he is still young and could be hers if she clicked her fingers a new wave of officers arrive at the camp including the stunning 6 foot three inch lieutenant earl schoen a week or so later andy is squiring ailie to the local swimming pool when schoen effortlessly crawls across the pool to be introduced ailie quickly realises he is uneducated and has no family background but the lieutenant doesn t give up unfortunately he s at the pool with a date kitty preston who confronts ailie and accuses her of trying to steal her man ailie laughs it off as the lieutenant arrives all big dumb innocence and the moment passes at the next dance the lieutenant persistently butts in on her dances and rushes her so he settles in to becoming her regular guy even though other officers pop up in between it s bewildering how many partners these american girls had one a week it seems except next time he encounters them they ve had a row the lieutenant wants to invite andy and another soldier to a little leaving party with two girls and ailie but when they go to collect ailie she refuses to let the lieut in andy finally gains admittance from the black butler and finds ailie crying mortified by what happened that afternoon when she was in town and bumped into schoen on the arm of another woman eventually andy persuades her to relent and join the little party at the mess shack in the camp they they drop one of the girls and the other two couple andy is paired with a girl called sally carrol happer drive deep into the southern countryside and park and hear the sounds the birds the crickets the whole package which he still remembers fifteen years later next morning his regiment are entrained and sent to a camp on long island ready to ship to europe but while there the war ends he never gets to serve instead they are shipped back to tarleton here schoen is quickly demobilised but andy is a regular soldier and it takes the best part of the winter to get free and now the young men of tarleton began drifting back from the ends of the earth some with canadian uniforms some with crutches or empty sleeves a returned battalion of the national guard paraded through the streets with open ranks for their dead and then stepped down out of romance forever and sold you things over the counters of local stores only a few uniforms mingled with the dinner coats at the country club dance andy is a back number and knows it bill knowles arrived one day and left the next ailie was waiting for lieutenant schoen a few days before andy is due to leave the camp schoen finally shows up andy comes across them walking in town and what a sorry pair they make he has been home and is now wearing a cheap suit and a terrible haircut his provincial low class there for everyone to see three days after his arrival schoen and andy head north together on the train schoen explains that ailie has her heart set on some rich aristocratic guy he doesn t care he spotted two janes on the train and now suggests to andy they go and chat them up 3 six years pass as andy attends harvard law school then goes into business he occasionally bumps into acquaintances from his southern days and hears scattered news of ailie it was seeing a girl greet a man off a train and throw her arms around him that gave him a sudden irrational urge to go back to tarleton so he wires ailie and catches a train tarleton is shabbier than he remembers ailie is still beautiful after all she s only 25 yet she has absorbed the new feverish atmosphere of the times she takes him to rowdy and slightly desperate parties there was a new generation upon the floor with less dignity than the ones i had known but none of them were more a part of its lazy feverish essence than ailie in a lull at one of them she remembers schoen and says maybe he was the only one she ever then again maybe not that night in the hotel he realises he still loves her but next day when he tells her she tells him that she s marrying someone next month a southerner ok fair enough to indulge him she agrees to take a cab out to the old camp it s completely disappeared replaced by cotton fields rather pathetically he blunders from one spot to another trying to orient himself by the few remaining trees but eventually gives up the camp has gone beyond trace and with it all his memories of the south the last of the narrator i e one who drops in and out of the subject s life it s reminiscent in a different key of the story the rich boy where another bemused narrator reports his sightings of a charismatic and on heady 1920s when americans ruled the place and went on endless wild nights out charlie goes for dinner with his brother in law lincoln and the latter s wife marion his wife s sister who clearly dislikes him and drops disapproving hints about his drinking his 8 year old daughter honoria is staying with them i don t understand the family relationships or what s going on charlie leaves and goes prowling round montmartre revisiting the old bars where he and his friends squandered so much money and discovering they a...
