lied well it took about one second to process that one record and since this sql has an in line sql query in it it will take 450 000 seconds to complete and that is a little over 5 days since there within a few seconds carol lockley by the way was an oracle financials developing wizard i ll tell you another story in a later post about stephen todd and a sql statement it is part of another story but if i hadn t been loaned to the data warehouse team back in 2002 i probably wouldn t have ever learned the skills i learned on that team while marvin and i worked converting the oracle database jobs to simple sql jobs for teradata our team lead murthy seemed a bit overwhelmed at times for the most part we didn t need to interact with him because we were busy working on our own parts but once we moved into the testing phase we needed murthy to move our code into the pre production environment over and over in september we went through a reorganization and then i was reporting to jim steele as i mentioned in the post dell s jim steele replaces power plant steel we had a new college hire on our team named ashley thomas that had joined the previous january ashley thomas s small facebook photo ashley was working on rewriting a customer experience application and he was having some trouble figuring out the code just before we switched managers to jim steele sam daniel asked me if i could work with ashley to help him out with the coding i had been giving ashley some tasks to work on so that he could take it in small steps then it came to the point where i would have liked to sit down with ashley and work one on one with him only i was stuck down at the other building with the data warehouse team when i had code that i wanted migrated to the pre production environment i would send it to murthy and he would put it in the other environment once it was there i could run the jobs and test it to see if i made any mistakes well to put it another way i could test it to find out what mistakes i had made it turned out that one day i sent some code to murthy to put into pre prod and murthy didn t respond back after a few hours that he had migrated the code so i did what i normally do when i feel like being rotten i took this opportunity to go back to my own cubicle in round rock and i had ashley come sit in my cube where we could work side by side we did that for about 4 days and ashley was making good progress then murthy called me and asked me why i hadn t been in the office this week i just said i am just waiting for you to migrate that code i sent to you 5 days ago i can t do anything until you put that code into pre prod you can imagine his reaction yeah i was being rotten i could have told him that i had to come back to the round rock to work with a team member on another project but i just acted as if i had left and was just waiting for him to take 5 minutes to migrate my code after berating me which was music to my ears he told me he had migrated the code i thanked him and told him i would return to parmer south the next day i also walked over to jim steele s cube my manager and told him what i did and how i was messing with murthy and why he knew i was working with ashley that week jim thanked me for the heads up in case something came back his way jim steele on a motorcycle with his wife melissa dean crutchfield moved up the managerial ladder and i remember a meeting with our cio when dean was leaving the company to move to illinois to become the cio of zebra technologies murthy kunala also worked his way up and was a senior manager at general motors when i worked there he left gm in 2017 to work for charles schwab as a vp the transition from oracle to teradata in record time meant that the project was a great success and everyone was happy there is one other person i would like to mention that marvin and i met while we were working on that team his name is lee mack lee mack with his wife judy lee mack had joined dell about 6 months before we began this project i believe he was a college hire at the time there was something about lee that made him instantly your friend the word lovable comes to mind years later whenever lee mack would see me he would come over and ask me if i knew how marvin was doing he was probably like me he cherished the time we spent working on this colossal project he left dell at the same time i did to go work for general motors he s still working on databases to this day i worked for years with marvin before i went to in the business in 2006 later marvin left to work for wal mart with chris enslin and ben hasan today he s a senior director for arvest bank in cyber security where would i be without linkedin one small acquaintance that i had while i was working on this team was thuy nguyen thuy nguyen she probably didn t even remember i was there but many years later i think about 2021 i was talking with her at general motors where she is still a data architect i reviewed a cover letter for her daughter who was applying for schools note that this is 19 years after we were both working on the data warehouse project you just never know when you meet someone how they will impact your life in some way many years later i remember during my first summer working at the power plantin 1979 they were still building the warehouse that would eventually house over 75 000
