within an hour which is fairly inconsistent with chlorine this may be the first real sarin attack of the war but hardly anyone is even aware of this stunning allegation a 2015 un report aclos hosting included a note verbale 150 from syrian authorities listing mostly later cw attacks on syrian troops mostly or all in 2014 and thought to be with chlorine this did not list but made reference to an 6 8 civilians 1 rebel fighter and 7 government troops next we turn to the ninth and the year s final allegation that would double the civilian and rebel fighter death toll and would be better remembered an arms control association timeline actually includes it calling it the first allegation of chemical weapons use of the conflict incident 9 23 december homs khalidiya district the very next day after the above a curiously symmetrical to the above seven people were reportedly killed in a cw attack in homs actually most report it was 6 killed including a rebel fighter but the vdc listed fsa fighter alaa asad al hasan and six civilian men including two related men named hamadi and one unidentified incident details are very unclear some blamed regime missiles and others a regime ground vehicle the sohr heard that grenades were thrown perhaps from the vehicle whoever s it was others agree canisters or grenades were thrown so that they hit a wall and it was during street battles at which insurgent fighters would be present sohr said this weapon is unidentified and has not been used before no images of the grenades were published but we might see the same again in incidents 17 and 20 reportedly carrying sarin overviews aclos monitor dr piers robinson at uk column basma a uk funded opposition media operation and affiliated medics suggested sarin was used in khalidiya citing related symptoms like miosis constricted pupils and improvement with atropine treatment other medics and a reporter speaking to us diplomatic sources cited different symptoms including dilated pupils the opposite of miosis and that atropine worsened the condition of the patients perhaps fatally in some cases this suggested something more like the incapacitant bz which is not a banned chemical and which syria was not known to produce one medic described symptoms including disorientation hallucination nervousness and lack of limb control more in line with bz than sarin video i reviewed may show some relaxed delirium as with bz but also suggest suffocation with blood in the airways pink blood tinged foam is seen suctioned out suggesting a severe irritant was also used no miosis was shown and there is no messy sludge syndrome as you d see with sarin the state department soon found it likely agent 15 a seemingly mythical version of bz was used in homs julian perry robinson noted the agent 15 reference indicated the reporting includes at least some misinformation if not outright disinformation there exist incentives to spread falsehoods or otherwise deceive opinion a situation now much exacerbated by the red line utterances of the us administration later it was decided it was an unspecified riot control agent like tear gas cs perhaps crediting the grenade claims but it acted more like bz somehow and it was used so improperly that seven people died is this bz like cs type stuff perhaps the same bz cs alleged to kill 2 in the same city of homs back in february and was it scrounged from the libyan arsenal as syrian authorities had feared just before that this incident would be shelved for a few months before becoming urgent again in time unclear but likely around 7 30 8 am the opposition local coordinating committees lcc reported for march 19 homs several cases of asphyxia were reported in baba amr due to releasing toxic gases by the regime s forces on the neighborhood no further details were given and no later sources would confirm anything later in the day western intelligence agencies spoke of a boosted military presence in homs with forces issued in the last few hours with chemical warfare gear likely in response to that khan al assal attack or perhaps to whatever happened in homs this third report would fade into
