playing because i think if anyone bowls with a jerk i e a throw moss does and jerking is unfair bowling he also reiterated that if moss was a fair bowler it was odd that lancashire refused to play him the long feature on moss in the lancashire daily post printed at the height of the controversy in 1899 but including the interview he had given the previous year had made a good point if as some people allege moss throws without a single shadow of doubt it does seem strange that there are no umpires in the lancashire league courageous enough to no ball him of course no umpire cares to take satisfaction to you i may tell you that i have consulted both the west riding and united league umpires in the matches you have taken part in and all say that your delivery is perfectly fair you have moss should be called up to play for lancashire against the touring australian team as was the case with the more high profile cases such as mold reasonable people disagreed vehemently about moss s action part of the problem was doubtless the emotiveness of the issue but that comment about moss s wrist might indicate where some of the disagreement arose did everyone watching lancashire league cricket appreciate how nebulous the wording in the laws of cricket did they consider use of the wrist to be unfair and how much of this scrutiny and the eventual decision of two umpires to no ball moss was a result of unbiased judgement and how much a result of the increasing furore about his action and about the issue of throwing nationally the season passed without further incident and as moss already had a contract in place for 1900 there was no likelihood that bacup would stop playing him but trouble was inevitable in what became his final season in the lancashire league on 21 june 1900 when bacup played at east lancashire during his second over moss was no balled three times in a row by the square leg umpire under the amended rules once it became known that the call was for throwing there was general astonishment part of the reason seemed to be according to the lancashire daily post that moss had modified his style for the new season and according to the correspondent many old cricketers said during the match that there was nothing in his action that could be objected to nor could they understand why only those three deliveries were singled out a common complaint in these situations at the end of the over the bacup captain was seen talking earnestly to the two umpires later in the innings moss took a hat trick as a result at the next league committee meeting church s representative seconded by bacup s representative proposed that the two umpires from that game should be struck off the list the motion was heavily defeated but the representatives were reminded that their umpires should see that fair play takes place on the field no further action appears to have been taken and if the lancashire league committee discussed moss the minutes are silent on the issue perhaps they were too taken up at the end of the season with the controversy over another professional jack usher on the field moss was a touch more expensive than the previous season was going on a report in the todmorden and district news in august 1900 related there does not seem to be much harmony among the bacup first eleven just at present i rather fancy that the vexed question of professional is at the bottom of the unpleasantness the article related how the club captain and another team member had not played in a match but had attended it the vexed question of professional might indicate a discussion over whether moss would have his contract renewed but the newspaper and all others are silent over who was on either side of any debate by august there was a great deal of rumour regarding where moss would play next some sources suggested he was heading to east lancashire but after some confusion and apparent back and forth that club signed a different player instead moss signed for burslem the north staffordshire league champions on 7 august but by the end of the month reports appeared that he had signed for a different club effectively to break his contract in any case moss brought his lancashire league career to an end by taking seven for 15 in his final match for bacup in moss s place bacup signed the yorkshire county player j t brown junior the darfield born player rather than the more famous england batter for 1901 he had been barnsley s professional and moss had occasionally deputised for him there in 1899 and 1900 taking all ten wickets for 32 runs in one match against huddersfield to the point that a swap was rumoured between bacup and barnsley brown stayed at bacup for two seasons but was notably less successful than moss in 1901 he took 71 wickets at 14 80 half the wickets of moss in 1900 at almost double the cost and although he improved to take 76 wickets at 9 84 in 1902 brown s contract was not renewed burslem occasional test umpire thomas mycroft who had no issue with moss s bowling action but this was a slightly different version of moss his pace seemed off at times and he was occasionally wayward he took three for 64 in the first innings but bowled just two overs in the long south african second innings owing to a leg injury was his lack of effectiveness because he was bowling differently was it an injury or was he not quite as devastating against a higher standard of opposition if it cannot have been pleasant for the man himself the publicity around moss s bowling benefitted both burslem and other clubs in the league the undeniable success of his bowling and its sheer pace also proved attractive as a result attendances increased considerably when players from across the league turned out for his benefit match in july 1901 the staffordshire sentinel noted the controversy around his action but said the presence of these players demonstrated the fact that whatever the merits of moss s bowling the feeling displayed towards him by the members of other teams are of a perfectly friendly and sportsmanlike character in mid 1901 the todmorden and district news carried another story it is rumoured that the todmorden committee have the chance of engaging sam moss the demon bowler for next season my only hope is that they will not avail themselves of it as i am by no means convinced of the fairness of his delivery and i am afraid a great risk would be incurred by any club which again ventured to bring moss into lancashire league cricket and there was an interesting post script at the meeting of the lancashire league committee in early july it was proposed by church and seconded by ramsbottom that all the clubs should pledge themselves not to engage moss at any time this was passed at the next meeting but the decision to blacklist moss was not recorded in any official minutes instead it was quietly noted in the back of the minute book and never formally published as usual in these circumstance no evidence survives about how moss handled these setbacks nor of how he felt as questions continued to be asked about the fairness of his bowling perhaps it never bothered him and he saw cricket as just a job and perhaps not even that because by the time of the 1901 census when moss still lived in bacup he still did not list himself as a professional cricketer by that stage he was working on his own account as a publican the proprietor of the bull s head hotel however the family relocated to staffordshire subsequently and no trace survives of what other work moss might have been carrying out yet for all his success at burslem his reputation at the top of professional cricket was badly affected although he was still only 32 and could have enjoyed years more at that
