establishment had no wish to remind anyone that amateurs had wrested control of cricket from professionals those early engravings and paintings of cricket teams often depicted all professional teams because in the first half of the nineteenth century cricket was a sport dominated by professionals not men from the bottom of the victorian social ladder but neither from the legions of ex public schoolboys lower gentry and the upper and middle classes who would later come to dominate the game the main drivers of cricket s growth in england in this period were the all professional touring teams such as william clarke s all england eleven who travelled around the country playing local teams and spreading the gospel of cricket the leading professionals although not always well paid controlled their own destinies made their own decisions and ran their own teams by the end of the century and for most of the following century cricket had become a sport run and dominated by amateurs the reasons are complex but the seeds were sown in the increasing reverence for sport in public schools that developed from the 1860s when sport and cricket in particular acquired its association with morality and character notions of play up play up and play the game or it s not cricket implanted themselves in generations of public schoolboys cricket was suddenly fashionable respectable and desirable all at the same time and those public schoolboys were eager to continue playing after leaving school or university particularly as cricket continued to grow in popularity with the general public therefore they gravitated to the still embryonic county clubs that had sprung up across the country for this new generation it was unacceptable that cricket should be run by professionals sport in their worldview was tainted by professionalism and became about money rather than honour played for compensation rather than enjoyment therefore they moved to wrest control and they were able to do so because amateur run representative county cricket grew in popularity just as the public began to lose interest in the itinerant professional teams and by 1873 the counties had imposed a series of rules and restrictions such as the stipulation that a cricketer could only represent one county per season and the insistence upon qualification rules which left the amateurs firmly in control it was a rapid efficient and fairly bloodless revolution that left professionals out of pocket forced to obey their social betters the life of a professional cricketer became one of subservience obedience and frequently of financial struggle there was remarkably little resistance because trouble causers were quietly moved aside the amateurs held the purse strings professionals had little choice but to accept the new status quo particularly as their alternatives dried up the various touring teams withered away and other avenues for professional cricketers such as coaching or employment by a local club were generally not as remunerative as county cricket and results driven league cricket which for a time would present a viable alternative remained in its infancy within the county game there was little pushback because many of the teams were naturally amateur ex public schoolboys and young men with the financial security and leisure time to play cricket naturally gravitated to the southern counties those teams were predominantly amateur and the professionals had to know their place when surrounded by their supposed social betters particularly in those early days when there was no formal competition and no official method of recognising the champion county results did not matter too much the clubs played only a few times each season and there were no particular expectations in such an environment with no real impetus to build strong teams county cricket was oddly shapeless and countless mediocre amateurs played regularly the picture only changed as expectations grew culminating in the creation of the county championship for the 1890 season but in the 1870s such things mattered little not every county was dominated by amateurs though cricket was very different in the north of england yorkshire and nottinghamshire were effectively all professional teams with professional captains but the pressure to conform was too much particularly when their county committees were populated with ex amateurs former public schoolboys and men whose sympathy and social background favoured amateurism therefore it should not be surprising that the last rearguard action by henry holden popularly known as hellfire jack a teetotal bachelor who took up the role in 1874 born in 1823 he had played cricket in the 1850s and made a single first class appearance for sussex but he was a man of immense influence away from cricket he had served in the army and reached the rank of captain in 1856 he was appointed the chief constable of nottinghamshire and was also a justice of the peace yet amateurism had not completely permeated the county at a time when most captains were amateurs the nottinghamshire captaincy remained in the hands of professionals until 1889 the long serving professional richard daft had led the team since 1871 but he resigned at the end of the 1880 season by then the dominant figures in the team were the professional pair of alfred shaw and arthur shrewsbury shaw was long established as the best bowler in england he was 38 years old and had first played for nottinghamshire in 1864 but was still good enough to head the first class averages in 1880 shrewsbury was younger and less established aged 24 at the end of the 1880 season he was an exceptionally promising professional batter who became the leading player in england in the following decade the two men had taken part in a tour of north america organised by daft in 1879 after which they went into a business partnership running a sports depot both men had grand financial ambitions and were not content just to toe the amateur line in the 1880s the pair organised and managed several tours of australia by largely professional teams and also organised one rugby tour of australia they believed that money could be made from such ventures and were not the kind of men who took kindly to being told what they could or could not do and they drew inspiration from a disruptive new external element introduced to english cricket in 1878 a team of australian cricketers visited england unlike the 1868 australian side known to history as the australian aborigines which had been planned as an exploitative novelty this team played many of the leading english teams in first class matches the tour was an enormous cricketing and financial success and a follow up was organised in 1880 both tours and australian tours of england for many years to come were organised on the basis that the players who formed a private company and collectively contributed money to pay the initial tour expenses shared all profits between themselves this success grated with some english professionals including shaw and shrewsbury who resented the official amateur status of the australians with all its attendant respect and honour at a time when they were pocketing large sums of money one early clash came during the 1878 tour when a match was arranged at the oval between the touring team and a team of leading professionals organised by shaw most of whom had been part of the all professional tour of australia in 1876 77 organised by james lillywhite which included the retrospectively recognised first ever test match but after the match had been publicised nine of the professionals publicly withdrew via a letter to the sporting times their reason was that they had asked for a fee of 20 which the english team of 1876 77 had paid to australians in an equivalent match on their tour but the australians had only offered 10 the signatories of the letter were harry
