i don t see people who seek transition surgery as ever having a thought of making themselves god so i will get that ridiculous thought out of the way quickly and as for the sex a person is assigned at birth being a gift from god did the authors of the document not listen at all to the transgender people who shared their experiences with the church apparently not francis debernardo the executive director of new ways ministry a maryland based group that advocates for gay catholics told the new york times the vatican is again supporting and propagating ideas that lead to real physical harm to transgender nonbinary and other lgbtq people he said the vatican s defence of human dignity excluded the segment of the human population who are transgender nonbinary or gender nonconforming debernardo said it presented an outdated theology based on physical appearance alone and was blind to the growing reality that a person s gender includes the psychological social and spiritual aspects naturally present in their lives let s talk psychological for a moment how would any of you feel if physically you were in the body of a male but psychologically you were in the body of a woman or vice versa i know how i would feel i would feel trapped i am claustrophobic and i am pretty sure it would kick in i am surprised with all the information that is available that the catholic church would not be making a greater effort to keep up with the times and probably the thoughts of the younger generation within its ranks transgender people didn t ask to be that way and if they feel transition is a way to correct it then i am all for them going that route who are we to tell others how to run their lives the document also mentions surrogacy it states the roman catholic church s opposition to it whether the woman carrying a baby is coerced into it or chooses to subject herself to it freely surrogacy makes the child a mere means subservient to the arbitrary gain or desire of others the vatican said in the document which also opposed in vitro fertilization what the hell it means by that i have no idea when it comes to surrogacy most people get involved because for one reason or another they are unable to have a baby in the normal fashion yes they could adopt but in cases of surrogacy usually the eggs of the woman wanting the child or sperm from the male partner are used giving the couple a blood tie to the child although i am adopted myself i certainly can t find anything wrong with couples using surrogacy if they see that as the best fit for them they should go for it the story in the times said the document was intended as a broad statement of the church s view on human dignity including the exploitation of the poor migrants women and vulnerable people the vatican acknowledged that it was touching on difficult issues but said that in a time of great tumult it was essential and it hoped beneficial for the church to restate its teachings on the centrality of human dignity it might be beneficial for the church but i can t see it since it adversely affects so many of its flock as being beneficial to anyone else it certainly doesn t do anything for human it prompted a discussion both on the post and in my home about book banning and ultimately freedom of speech before i get into it when i talk about freedom of speech i don t mean freedom from consequence i don t think freedom of speech means that you can say whatever you want and nobody can say or do anything as a result this is actually a topic that i think about quite often because it s a debate that really highlights how extremely polarized the different sides of the political spectrum have become rather than debate or discussion we often see calls to simply shut down those with different viewpoints i m a firm believer that those debates and discussions are not only healthy they are necessary without them we re only strengthening the echo chambers into which we all seem to have fallen this leads to people on either side digging their heels in even deeper and even less tolerance for the voices of those with whom we disagree take for example the frequent reports out of universities of speakers talks getting cancelled because students disagreed with the topic would not a better path be to invite a second speaker from the other side of the issue to either offer their own talk or perhaps even better take part in a debate then students can hear both sides and come to their own conclusions i say this knowing that this would result in more voice being given to those with whom i disagree heck the facebook post that prompted the discussion was about mein kampf not exactly a book that i feel is full of inspiring ideas but i also know that my own worldview has been improved for the better by listening to those with whom i disagree in some cases my mind has been changed in whole or in part in others it has helped to strengthen my existing ideas but in all cases it has helped me to better understand why those others feel the way they do which makes for a better world i ve had a similar sort of internal debate about the way trudeau put an end to the so called freedom convoy in ottawa in 2022 i like many who supported the pandemic measures against which the convoy was protesting was ready for it to be ended hearing stories about people in ottawa who couldn t sleep and how many small businesses had been impacted i supported trudeau s use of the emergencies act to finally bring the protest to an end but then i realized would i have supported that measure if it had been a protest about something i believe in say it was about healthcare spending or indigenous land rights would i still think he was right to have used the emergencies act to shut down what was although i hate to admit it an effective protest protests are meant to be disruptive and make you heard again i don t support their cause but by definition it was effective really if i don t want to be a hypocrite i d either have to support taking similar action or i d have to conclude that trudeau was wrong to do what he did in this case it s uncomfortable to argue for freedom of speech or protest for those with whom you disagree i wholeheartedly acknowledge that but if you don t support the right of free speech for everyone then you don t support free speech and if you think some books
