intern at the oriental museum a post by erin munro hi my name is erin and i ve had the pleasure of being the learning and engagement intern at the oriental museum for the last year with my time here coming to an end i thought i d share with you some of my experiences and what i ve learnt whilst being part of this amazing team i kicked off the year shadowing and helping my predecessor in her final month as intern seeing first hand what was in store for me in my upcoming role i d be lying if i said i wasn t nervous at first it was something new and would have an impact on lots of lovely people at the oriental museum august 14 2024 0 graduate intern update beth graduate intern beth hall updates us on what she s been up to recently hello it s beth back with another update on my archives and special collections internship this month i ve been with the learning and engagement team who are based at the oriental museum and here at pgl i ve seen them around the building and requesting material for their sessions so i ve been curious to see what they actually get up to i certainly found out do remember for how could we forget that a lot of what the learning team did while i was with them was adapted to covid restrictions i e being unable to have large groups in the building or to go out to schools however this does mean they ve fine tuned their digital learning sessions to adapt what she s been up to in the last month or so it s been nearly three months since i started here at palace green library in durham and time has definitely flown my mornings are spent helping out in the search room to make sure our readers and collections are well looked after it s still quiet in palace green while restrictions are still in place and students are enjoying their summers but there s still been a steady stream of reprographics requests and enquiries to take care of to ensure researchers still have access to our collections remotely i haven t seen this building in its fully terrible year but in one of our last blog posts of the year we thought it would be nice to look back at some of the positives for durham university library and collections positives i hear you cry yes believe it or not amidst the unrelenting difficulties of 2020 there have been quite a few in addition to the reactive services we have offered such as click and collect or browse and borrow we have implemented a number of service improvements that will stand us in good stead for years to come as we hopefully begin to edge out of the covid 19 pandemic in the coming months so a few highlights to transitioning little dragons under 5s group from a multi sensory museum based programme to a digital session families access from home during the covid 19 lockdown creating digital content in the oriental museum galleries lockdown brought with it many changes to ways of working in museums especially when it comes to engaging with our very youngest visitors preschool children and their families little dragons the oriental museum s group for children under 5 has been running as a weekly gallery based session for over 8 years attracting an average of 15 20 children per session each session is themed around exploring an object the children can see on display with craft activities songs and sensory stories all these activities were very much based on sensory engagement communicating directly
