important director miles calman he promises not to touch a drink he s heard calman lamenting there are so many drunks or rummies in the industry but as he s chatting to the stunning mrs calman one time actress stella walker she hands him one from a passing waiter s tray and it seems churlish to refuse then looking out over the big pacific he has another one he s feeling fine more banter and chat then a famous singer sings a song 2 guests are beginning to drift away when in a drunken impulse joel decides to perform a skit of his and beautiful stella walker agrees to play the part of the secretary it s a skit satirising the vulgarity of a well known producer dave silverstein but as he delivers what are meant to be funny lines to a quietly watching crowd he begins to have a sinking feeling when the hilarious sketch is over there isn t a ripple of applause until the host calman himself shouts boo next morning monday joel writes a grovelling telegram of apology to calman but at work at the studio his super well paid buddy nat keogh assures him it was funny and nobody cares then he is amazed to get a telegram from calman s wife stella who d shown a special warmth towards him inviting him to her sister s party the following sunday 3 the sunday comes and joel has a late breakfast you rarely get details of food in fiction so it s interesting to read that this breakfast consists of trout avocado salad and a pint of california wine at the sister s house guests arrive including miles and stella it s obvious they ve spent all day so far fiercely arguing miles talks to joel and tells him he s having psychoanalysis the analyst says it ll take at least a year to sort him out separately stella finds him and bitterly unloads turns out miles has been having an affair with one of her best friends for two years eva goebel stella has more to say and drags him into a bedroom to unburden there s no question of hanky panky the door is open passersby make jokes but stella is spilling her guts in fact at such length that in a very modern american way miles invites joel back to their place to continue the therapy here at calman s house stella continues upbrading her husband and describing his infidelity in his presence with him sometimes chipping in it is a peculiar way for them to be psychologically intimate and joel understandably feels like a voyeur and all of a sudden realises he is in love with stella he goes home stella calls him to ask him to come to a dinner party the following saturday miles will be out of town to see a football match fitzgerald slips in descriptions of scrip meetings and arguments about shots and editing decisions to convey the working week on a studio after a long meeting miles tells joel he s not going to the game after all and joel s the reason he wouldn t be surprised if stella got her own back by having a fling with joel so he s going to take her to the dinner party that said miles then asks joel if he ll still come along as he needs someone to talk to this is all surprisingly woody allen and self referential 4 then miles changes his mind and travels out of town anyway so joel meets stella at the theatre to watch the show before the dinner they look into each others eyes after the play she tells him the rest of the smart crowd are going to the opening of jack johnson s club but she doesn t want to go so she invites him back to her house trouble is she is deeply suspicious that maybe miles did not go to the ball game and is in los angeles spying on them understandably joel says he feels like a pawn in the psychological game between husband and wife still he tells her he loves her and discovers she has no interest in him whatsover fitzgerald skips over the vital moments but it seems he makes a pass at her and she simply refuses she s not cross she thinks he s sweet she s perfectly ready to let him leave when the phone rings 5 after answering the phone stella faints joel carries her to the sofa and splashes her face with water miles s plane has crashed and he s dead joel is shocked but stella becomes hysterical joel says she can t stay on her own and he ll call some friends for her but she says she has no friends and hysterically begs him to say with her hold her she doesn t love him at all it s the shock and hysteria speaking miles realises she wants him to stay the night not because she wants to sleep with him but because she wants to keep the situation which miles feared alive and so keep miles living on a bit longer realising this joel refuses instead calls her doctor and tells him to bring a nurse and other cars and people start arriving and stella is soon surrounded and so joel can leave fascinatingly savvy use of psychoanalysis suddenly erupting into his narratives at first i thought the crazy would mean drunk that he got howlingly drunk on one particular sunday only by the end did i fully realise that crazy sunday refers to sundays in general as a lord of misrule type interlude between the grind of the working week and at the same time specifically refers to the craziness of miles with his compulsion to be unfaithful and at the end the desperate hysteria of stella to have sex in order to keep her dead husband alive crazy sunday online commentary fitzgerald s biographer andré le vot tells us the scene at the tycoon s party is closely based on scott drunkenly making a fool of himself at a party given by irving thalberg the basis of the character monroe stahr in fitzgerald s last unfinished novel the last tycoon joel is forgiven whereas thalberg fired fitzgerald the same week written at the end of 1931 this was not the kind of jolly entertainment valued by his regular outlet the saturday evening post who turned it down at his peak in the second half of the 1920s scott s stories sold for 4 000 each this one was sold to the american mercury for the derisory sum of 200 le vot p 264 6 three hours between planes 1941 three dead with a few deft phrases donald manages any potential embarrassment and they can talk openly like adults she offers him a highball and says she s feeling lonely her husband is away and she thinks he s got a mistress in new york he wisely tells her he suspected his wife but then made a conscious attempt to put jealousy out of his life and felt much better and better still when his wife died young and he had nothing but happy memories of her and now they remember stolen childhood kisses at a thousand parties fitzgerald s core subject described so wonderfully in this side of paradise then they both think it was the other one who threw them over she has an old photo album and she digs it out for them to pore over inevitably they kiss but fitzgerald gives it a psychoanalytical spin he was excited but most of all confused had he kissed nancy or a memory or this lovely trembly stranger who looked away from him quickly and turned a page of the book she goes to show him another photo of him but donald doesn t recognise the by in fact when he bends down he realises it isn t him suddenly he realises it s a photo of a different boy altogether donald bowers all the memories they ve just shared of sleigh rides and parties and summers in frontenac they were all of the wrong donald he is a little embarrassed but she is mortified she moves right across the room from him and when he goes and kneels by her armchair she recoils from his touch and tells him to please leave giving him the number of the taxi company as donald rides in the taxi to the airport once again fitzgerald provides his own psychological commentary on the story for five blinding minutes he had lived like a madman in two worlds at once he had been a boy of twelve and a man of thirty two indissolubly and helplessly commingled 7 the lost decade 1939 in the side of paradise i noticed several surprising references to h g wells and some of the short stories are surprisingly fantastical in a wellsian mode such as the diamond as big as the ritz this feels like one of them it is very short indeed just four pages long orrison brown is a dogsbody in the office of a news weekly one day there s a visitor to the editor a pale tall man of forty with blond statuesque hair whose card gives his name as trimble after he s been in the editor s office for a while the editor buzzes through to orrison to tell him to take mr trimble out for lunch this trimble is very odd indeed he claims to have been away for a decade and orrison wonders if he s been in jail or a sanatorium or the brazilian jungle but his conversation is surreal when orrison asks what he d like to see trimble replies well the back of people s heads he suggested their necks how their heads are joined to their bodies i d like to hear what those two little girls are saying to their father not exactly what they re saying but whether the words float or submerge how their mouths shut when they ve finished speaking after lunch as they walk along fifth avenue when orrison mentions the armistead building trimble says yes he designed it but i was taken drunk that year every which way drunk so i never saw it before now is it as simple as that the guy s been on a decade long bender that would be a record even for fitzgerald but he s weirder than that again with surrealism i simply want to see how people walk and what their clothes and shoes and hats are made of and their eyes and hands would you mind shaking hands with me trimble says he wants to walk by himself for a bit and walks off leaving orrison to shake his head and mutter jesus he said to himself drunk for ten years but then the story ends with a moment which feels genuinely strange which for a moment moves beyond fitzgerald s usual romantic realism into something spookier which spooks orrison so much that he felt suddenly of the texture of his own coat and then he reached out and pressed his thumb against the granite of the building by his side to reassure himself that the world is real that he is real for a brief wellsian moment reality reels the lost decade online credit the lost decade and other stories by f scott fitzgerald was first young artists summer show 2026 the royal academy each year the royal academy holds its well known summer exhibition which is always packed to the rafters alongside this they hold a parallel exhibition of young artists for students aged 4 to 18 it s a free open submission competition which means tens of thousands of schoolchildren send in their artworks over 25 000 this year and the judges this year jane and louise wilson have the difficult task of whittling this down to the 195 works on display here as always there s a second layer of winners in that the 195 works on physical display at the academy are augmented by 330 or so additional works which you can only see online young artists summer show 2026 online download a pdf catalogue a really important point is that the academy asks all the artists children to submit a sentence or two explaining what they were trying to achieve in their work in their mixture of naivety and insight sweetness and charm these children s comments about
