or capability it s simply about showing up it is about you leveraging your personhood in the cause of whatever it is that you value the only prerequisite for saturday is a heart that breaks on behalf of its neighbor and its nation and a courage that moves your feet to stand alongside other similarly heartbroken but courageous human beings you don t need a t shirt you don t need a sign no bullhorn is necessary no plan is required you won t need to shout a slogan or sing a song or make a sound you won t need to run into harm s way all you need to do is show up here in boston a mash up of two observances an impromptu exchange on facebook about no kings day led to an invitation from one of my long time friends jenna blum to join her for the day s gathering jenna is a gifted and successful author she set her first novel those who save us in wwii germany it became a word of mouth new york times bestseller and established her as a book club favorite the book was in part a product of interviewing holocaust survivors for the shoah foundation george washington boston statue here with jenna expressly opposed the american president ever becoming a king figure fueled by her understanding of authoritarian rule jenna also frequently supports important protests and demonstrations that call out abuses of power like rev pavlovitz she made a persuasive case that no kings day easily rose to that level so donning my tricorn hat i hopped on the subway to meet up with her your mission sir is simply to show up we quickly discovered that boston s no kings day demonstration had become a sort of mash up with its annual pride parade a major event in this city the pride parade element made the gathering more festive and celebratory and less one of protest lots of people brought their children and many kids were part of the parade nevertheless that dynamic had its own poignancy i e seeing folks from the lgbtq community a group savagely and cruelly targeted by the trump administration celebrating their identity so openly and joyously while being greeted by nothing but cheers and applause while the political messages may have been mixed at times they were wholly compatible and a lot of garb and signs blended both themes quite successfully please excuse the language but he has a great point while surely both events drew people of all ages we observed a slight generational pattern with younger folks somewhat more likely to be celebrating the pride parade and older folks somewhat more likely to be demonstrating against trump s excesses the day s drizzle did not keep folks away at one point we met up with two of jenna s friends who happened to be impressive young activists i enjoyed learning about their interests l to r jenna josie and sadie by the way in the background of the photo above you can see some of the boston police officers assigned to the event we noted that the police we encountered were in a non confrontational stand down mode much like with any other parade or big event on the streets this contributed positively to the day a message for all of us i think that the message pictured below is of vital significance this critical historical moment demands that we save the core structure of our democracy first and foremost it doesn t mean abandoning heartfelt principled positions on social and political issues that are dear to us but it does mean that we must prioritize rescuing and then strengthening a democracy that allows everyone to have freedom of expression and be safeguarded by the rule of law no kings day went nationwide we in boston were not alone in simultaneously holding no kings day and pride events in fact one of my friends reported a similar festive vibe with a joint event in her ohio hometown in addition a casual scroll through my facebook feed revealed friends posts about participating in no kings day events across the country by comparison video footage of trump s self celebratory military sources have reported that the cost of his little parade was some 45 million tragedy and assassination in minnesota i would feel much better about today s events were it not for the awful news coming out of minnesota politically motivated assassinations and attempted assassinations targeting former and current democratic state legislators as reported by the associated press hundreds of law officers fanned out across a minneapolis suburb saturday in pursuit of a man who authorities say posed as a police officer and fatally shot a democratic state lawmaker in her home in what gov tim walz called a politically motivated assassination authorities said the suspect also shot and wounded a second lawmaker and was believed to be trying to flee the area democratic former house speaker melissa hortman and her husband mark were killed in their brooklyn park home sen john hoffman also a democrat and his wife yvette were injured at their champlin address about 9 miles about 15 kilometers away authorities said the suspect had no kings flyers in his car and writings mentioning the names of the victims as well as other lawmakers and officials though they could not say if he had any other specific targets a minnesota official told the associated press that the suspect s writings also contained information targeting prominent lawmakers who have been outspoken in favor of abortion rights the official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing summing up it was so gratifying to experience today s gathering in boston with one of my dear friends this was by the very sense of community commitment and celebration it generated a sharp rejoinder to the authoritarian cruelty of the man marking his birthday with a quiet military parade in washington but the any other supervisor responsible for evaluating a subordinate employee in any federal agency this latest opm missive is a cruel joke it evidences the reckless retreat from rationality in government we re seeing every day part of a break it and make chaos approach that would seem clownish if it weren t so destructive these public servants and their counterparts in every federal agency deserve our appreciation and respect not the trauma induced by a man wielding a chainsaw iied indeed in my first law review article about the legal implications of workplace bullying under american employment law georgetown law journal 2000 i reported the results of my study bemoaning the lack of success of workers who had sued their employers for severe bullying behaviors using a legal theory called intentional infliction of emotional distress iied over and again courts found that even the cruelest and most malicious workplace behaviors often were insufficiently abusive to meet the standards of this legal claim in even the worst of these cases employers did not announce their intentions to traumatize their workers however in the case of russell vought now a leading trump administration official traumatization is not a mere by product of demonizing vilifying and terminating public servants but rather an express objective back in 2018 journalist adam serwer observed that donald trump s only real authentic pleasure is in cruelty adding that his maga supporters are right with him on this as well the president s ability to execute that cruelty through word and deed makes them
