in which she stands naked by a river pours cow s blood over herself then rolls in a pile of white chicken feathers before standing up to reveal herself transformed into a bird woman it s one of four films dramatically projected onto screens suspended in a big darkened gallery space running alongside each other and creating a dynamic interplay as your attention switches from one to the other silhouette in the central and right hand ones photo by the author between 1971 and 1981 mendieta made over 100 film works showing them across the us and europe the works displayed here are digitally remastered from the original films and are being shown in the uk for the first time it s surprisingly difficult to find them online it s a little irritating that having gone to the time trouble and expense of producing remastered versions tate and the mendieta estate don t make them freely available online isn t art made to be seen rather than hoarded in galleries limited to those who can afford sculpture as an enduring object and towards experience and living process mendieta experimented with making siluetas through imprints and outlines of her body in the sand of beaches for this work mendieta dug out a silhouette form in the sand on a beach and filled it with red pigment red as general human blood or menstrual blood as the tide came in she photographed it being washed away by the mendieta made this silueta consisting of 47 black votive candles for her first solo exhibition at 112 greene street in new york she sourced the candles from a botanica shop specialising in spiritual supplies and medicine the title references ñañiguismo a fraternity that is part of the afro cuban santería tradition and offers spiritual protection to its members the curators tell us the candles will be lit periodically throughout the duration of the exhibition following the cycles of the moon so that the shape of the melted wax builds up over time they weren t lit when i visited shame then 1976 tree of life as you ve seen by now the mendieta s siluetta series evolved into a strategy of creating deliberately ephemeral female silhouettes in numerous natural settings on the beach in the grass of fields carved onto rock faces and as here against a venerable old tree in the mid to late 1970s she made a series of works called arbol de la vida or tree of life for this particular work mendieta plastered herself in mud before standing with raised arms at the base of a living tree making herself almost but not quite invisible merging into the natural background maybe as much as any exhibition features a recreation of a large installation from the silueta series which brings a forest like environment into the gallery space initially made in 1978 at the state university of new york college at old westbury the work is assembled from branches leaves soil moss and stones for this exhibition the work has been re imagined in the spirit of the artist s practice using locally sourced natural materials rather than a forest that can be entered the piece is designed to be viewed from afar and is an example of mendieta s ephemeral sculptures and the whole point is the way that amid the fake woodland all brown and beige stands out like a beacon the white and green silhouette of a body the artist s body or someone s body installation view of ana mendieta tate modern showing the recreation of untitled silueta series 1978 photo by the author 1982 yemaya gifts as the exhibition hits the 1980s it s noticeable that the female outline she s been working with has become more schematic almost abstract you can see this in yemaya gifts which is a flat sculpture made of sand shaped to resemble a highly stylised symbol of the female form and decorated with coral shells the name highlights mendieta s ongoing interest in anthropology being a reference to yemaya the maternal yoruba orisha deity of the ocean creation and fertility next to it on a big screen on the wall is running ochún an 8 minute film which shows a sculpture made of two ripples of sand on a beach open at both ends as tide water pours into it dancing in shimmering wavelets we watch the form based as always on the human figure disintegrate to the sound of healing dissolving ocean mendieta created ochún in the straits separating two islands key biscayne in florida and cuba her homeland it is titled by the author 1984 leaf art from 1983 to 1985 mendieta had a bursary to study at the american academy in rome she had already started experimenting with drawing scratching or marking leaves while in miami in 1982 now in rome she began to do this more systematically drawing on leaves she gathered from local trees she could write on the wide thick leathery leaves by scratching their surface when she returned to new york where she didn t have easy access to woodland or rural spaces she brought many of these leaves with her and began to develop them as a distinct form here she began drawing small versions of her iconographic female figure scratching and drawing on the leaves using needles pencil ink and sometimes her fingernails untitled by ana mendieta c 1984 the estate of ana mendieta that a big part of their impact is the way the leaves are displayed on linen rather than canvas and in stylish stained wooden frames it s the gestalt of the three natural elements three types of natural meterial which made them really sing for her 1985 totem grove her late turn to trees wood and leaves is exemplified by this final work made by selecting and marking different species of trees she sourced plane and linden trees from l aquila and rome she then hollowed out the trunks and burnt them with gunpowder one of the last works she completed in italy la jungla was likely a prototype for an unfinished project set to be installed at macarthur park los angeles her assistant carmine tornincasa explained i think the idea was to create the skin of the tree as if it were the protection carve and burn in the shape of the primitive human body had reached a kind of perfection in these tree works as in the nearby photos of rock carvings and some of the beach sand works it s not immediately clear how much is the artist s creation and how much she is working with features and shapes already present in the environment it felt to me like nature and artistic intervention had become so meshed so unified that it is often hard to tell where one ends and the other begins in these last works which are in fact the first ones you encounter in the exhibition it feels like she had succeeded in integrating art completely into the natural world and so maybe achieved that return from exile healed that breach achieved reunion with the great earth mother which she wrote about so feelingly in the piece i quoted early on comparison with antony gormley it s not a particularly fair comparison but at some stage thinking about how mendieta used her own body again and again to create shapes and sculptures this all reminded me of antony gormley whose many sculptures up to and including the huge cardboard one at this year s royal academy summer exhibition are based on his own body the obvious difference is that gormley s works from the angel of the north to the 100 cast iron figures on crosby beach to the massive sculpture by imperial college london these are all permanent they are made in the hard core industrial material of cast iron with all its associations of mastery and industry and control manufactured with great engineering expertise designed to last and in some sense exercise that mastery and control over their environments well you can guess what i m going to say next which is how gormley s huge metal permanent industrial highly engineered artefacts feel indelibly male assertive designed to sit over nature and how by dramatic contrast mendieta s many siluetas are not only female in outline and shape but feminine in many other ways made cheaply and easily designed to be impermanent designed to blend into or disintegrate back into the environment which temporarily hosted them unoffending unassertive ephemeral and as i pointed out regarding the room of final works so closely attuned to nature that it s sometimes hard to tell where natural forms of rock or sand end and her intervention begins a feminine at oneness with nature rather than a modern the pat hobby stories by f scott fitzgerald jack looked at him he saw a sort of whipped misery in pat s eye that reminded him of his own father a man in the way pat was forty nine with red rimmed eyes and a soft purr of whiskey on his breath fun in an artist s studio the penguin collection of pat hobby stories contains 17 stories they were published in esquire magazine one a month from january 1940 to may 1941 hobby is a scenario hack a script stooge i e a writer employed in a hollywood studio to write continuity for film scripts fitzgerald s reputation was at its lowest point when he wrote the first story as a one off for his editor at esquire magazine in september 1939 within weeks he d written another and began to realise he might have a character and a series on his hands the introduction to the penguin edition is by the very esquire same editor that fitzgerald sent the stories to and discussed them with arnold gingrich gingrich tells us that as fitzgerald sent each one in to the magazine he began to request changes to earlier ones as he came to think of the stories as creating a series the stories are pat hobby s christmas wish january 1940 a man in the way funny and or consistent character does fitzgerald manage to portray mediocrity shading into failure and the answer to all of them is up to a point if you re in the right mood but not all the time pat hobby key facts pat hobby is 49 years old he s been in the movies for 20 years so started in 1919 he s a writer of a particular type he writes continuity he gets other guys to write the dialogue he has 30 credits to his name but the point is that nobody cares he belongs to a bygone generation and the movies have evolved fast he worked for ten years in silent movies and hasn t adjusted too well to talkies which rely much more on dialogue which is kind of ironic considering that over half the work in a pat hobby story is done through dialogue pat still has passes for the major studio lots knows lots of the execs by name used to drink and party with them back in the day he was on 2 500 a week but he should have saved ...
