counsel s office in charge of hiring law firms although i don t know but if it was the gc office probably with input from human resources it would seem almost impossible for the new ceo to say no or italian wikimedians came and did an editathon and then there was a public event in a beautiful old theater and then the next day a bunch of us including my wife and children visited an important archeological site that was recently discovered there it was all so so lovely and for me personally after all the stress of recent months a real renewal sweet lovely wikipedians excitedly meeting and talking about wikipedia and introducing new editors including my daughter to how to edit and then an event and then drinks at a lovely outdoor bar by the library it s what it all means to be a position and even i get the occasional rant that i should resign or whatever let me pull back from this situation and talk for a minute about the wmf community relationship from a greater distance long experience shows a systemic problem that goes back basically forever and that is likely always to be a recurring problem there s a very long history of unfortunate issues between the community and staff at the foundation note that i m not saying management or executives here but staff there s a longstanding problem we need to innovate we need to adapt to changing technology christophe henner former chair of the board and a very long term french wikipedian has been publishing really great stuff about the challenges we face today in the rapidly changing internet landscape in the age of ai i should say i don t agree with every single thing he says but he s right about a lot and even when i think he s wrong his arguments are totally worthy of grappling with but there s also a long history of the developers at the wmf getting attacked in a rather unpleasant way for proposing things or designing things that at least some people don t like observing it quietly from my basement like the old fashioned nerd that i am sometimes i think the things proposed or done are bad superprotect sometimes good that isn t my point my point is that we have far too often not had an environment of assuming good faith and cheerful and kind discussion about how to make things better then what happens is a very unfortunate spiral staff afraid of the community community suspicious of staff even though on both sides everyone actually wants the same thing in the end when staff are afraid of the community it gets really hard to talk to people to answer questions in a tense environment where trust has been lost things get performative all around how to say look i m not sure if someone s ready to pounce on anything you say how much harder still is it to say i think we
