found my mind wandering into the realm of leaders who seem trapped in a state of rage and anger i further journeyed a bit into my past for examples of when i first witnessed this mode of behavior if you were a young sports fan growing up in northwest indiana during the 1970s it was likely that you were well aware of bobby knight 1940 2023 the celebrated head coach of the indiana university men s basketball team his many accomplishments included leading the 1975 76 squad to an undefeated record and a national championship the likes of which still elicit soggy memories from iu alums and indiana basketball fans of a certain age unfortunately knight was also a well known rageaholic a distinctly non clinical term that refers to as wiktionary defines it a person who feeds on expressing rage and aggression or a person with a highly volatile temper knight s most infamous moment came in february 1985 when iu was playing in state rival purdue angered at calls by the officials he jumped out from his chair and it went downhill from there as recounted by mike schumann for the daily hoosier after being called for a technical foul for arguing with the officials about those early whistles knight burst from that ill fated chair and continued to roar his thunderous disapproval meanwhile purdue s steve reid was preparing to shoot the technical free throw shots seemingly unwilling to accept what was unfolding before him knight hurled the flimsy mass of metal legs and red plastic seat past reid across the free throw lane and into a row of photographers the chair flinging incident was the most enduring of knight s public and private outbursts many of which are recounted in his wikipedia bio tales of these behaviors have tarnished his reputation as one of the best coaches in college basketball history many associate him more with his temper than with his championship banners imitators at least the rage part my junior high school and high school years overlapped with knight s glory years at iu many of my friends played on our basketball teams and so i was present for a lot of games consequently i got to see a lot of junior high and high school coaches in action let me tell you the bobby knight syndrome at least in terms of personal behavior was in full bloom among northwest indiana s high school hoops coaches of the time while certainly not every coach emulated knight s angry rages more than a few did especially towards officials and players they stomped up and down the basketball court sneered and yelled at players who made mistakes and argued vociferously with officials at times their hotheaded comportment during games was regarded as mildly entertaining but at least for some of the players their conduct during practices and games alike bordered on if not became abusive and drained the kids enjoyment of the sport furthermore unlike bobby knight a good number of these coaches weren t very successful at least as measured by wins and losses they failed as people and as coaches unnecessary by sharp contrast at least from my more distant perch it appeared that the women s basketball coaches of the day generally did not behave in such a manner i thought that overall the women s teams operated a stronger culture of teamwork and camaraderie furthermore we have seen plenty of very successful hoops coaches at the junior high through college levels who do not behave in angry raging ways among the legendary college basketball coaches john wooden ucla mike krzyzewski duke and pat summitt tennessee are just three exemplars of how great successes on the court can be matched by good character and strong mentoring relationships with players well beyond sports athletics are hardly the only field of endeavor where angry seething leaders get promoted and celebrated we are living in what public intellectual pankaj mishra has called an age of anger with authoritarian leaders manipulating the cynicism and discontent of furious majorities rageaholic behavior is the norm for some of these guys and yes they re mostly guys at the ground level these folks can be adroit practitioners of in your face incivility bullying and like bobby knight even violence at work and while some are said to be geniuses and thus granted a free pass there are many more mediocre rageaholics than brilliant ones why people are drawn to them makes for an important and complex discussion but we can surely say that notwithstanding any of their successes rageaholic leaders often leave a trail of damaged psyches in their respective wakes share this print opens in mine were touting the possibility of a big win for the democrats my judgment was telling me all along that this was going to be a very close election and yet it is hard for me to describe my deep sadness and concern over america s decision to return donald trump to the white house a smug intolerant and mean spirited energy has increasingly gripped this country since that fateful day in 2015 when trump announced his presidential candidacy it has fully manifested in an authoritarian cult like bloom now that this unstable raging cognitively deteriorating man and his ominously creepy running mate j d vance will be assuming their positions of enormous power grasping the twisted psychological dynamics of what led us to this terrible place will require deep study and a capacity for complexity and nuance i intend to be part of that inquiry after all the trump phenomenon embodies so much of what i have already learned about bullying abuse cruelty misogyny bigotry dishonesty and trauma during the course of my career this toxic force is accompanied by a deep contempt for the rule of law especially when applied to trump s own many proven and alleged offenses i realize that for the moment i am emphasizing the disturbing personal qualities of america s next president but make no mistake these qualities will drive public policy in awful ways posing fundamental threats to the rule of law democratic governance human dignity and the health of the planet personalities have consequences i mourn for this country and apologize to the world for what we have unleashed america a nation whose origins were inspired by the enlightenment has now empowered an authoritarian strongman and chosen to enter a new dark age i can only hope that somehow we will find a way to reverse
