he beginning of june just before the lancashire match that the press became aware of what was happening when it became known that seven nottinghamshire players would be absent from that game there was some speculation for example in the burton and derby gazette on 1 june that the seven rebels would make up an eleven and take the representation of the county out of the hands of the committee when the story emerged publicly in june holden offered his side of the tale to the press he argued that all interest in nottinghamshire and yorkshire matches would be lost if any yorkshire town could advertise the county sides as playing there he also said that the committee have evidence to prove that one of the seven said as far back as 1879 that he did not see why the eleven should not arrange their own matches take the gate money c as for a nottinghamshire match organised by the then captain richard daft in 1873 cited by shaw and shrewsbury as a precedent for players organising county matches independently holden said that the committee had objected at the time and that in any case the game predated the practice established by 1881 of the county secretaries meeting at lord s to arrange fixtures he also noted that the committee would not have objected to another match suggested as a precedent between nottinghamshire and sixteen of derbyshire because such games were not official county ones holden defended his efforts to secure benefits for the players and noted that because the rebels had agreed at the time of the early season colts match to play on the usual terms they had broken their word he concluded i can only add for the committee and myself that we are acting and have acted as we believe for the true interest of county cricket and in a manner which will ultimately prove beneficial to professional cricketers present and to come the claims and demands made by a shaw and shrewsbury are not such as have sprung up at a moment s consideration i have heard rumours of them for a long time i much regret that other and younger players should be drawn into a course which if persisted in must be greatly to their disadvantage henry perkins the mcc secretary in the 1890s image charles alcock famous cricketers and cricket grounds 1895 if both sides had publicly hardened their positions negotiations continued in a more private sphere before nottinghamshire s next game against middlesex at lord s the mcc secretary henry perkins was asked to mediate by holden he had authority in the matter because five of the seven rebels were members of the lord s groundstaff and therefore employed by the mcc as well as nottinghamshire according to perkins s own account written to the surrey secretary charles alcock the rebels agreed to make themselves available for selection but holden omitted scotton and flowers supposedly owing to their lack of form they played instead for the mcc flowers scored 40 and scotton a century the other five would not play without them and so the intervention by perkins failed to resolve the dispute even so perkins told alcock that the five rebels who were part of the lord s groundstaff had placed themselves in a right position with our club this might indicate where perkins placed the blame he went further in his support at the height of the dispute in june holden wrote urging alcock not to select any of the seven rebels for the annual gentlemen v players match at the oval for which the surrey committee selected the two teams alcock asked perkins for his opinion the mcc secretary responded that he had no objections to their selection yet alcock in turn perhaps revealed his sympathies because none of the seven played in the oval match but they continued to have the support of the mcc the following week four of the seven played for one side or the other at lord s for a match between the mcc and an england team and three played for the mcc selected gentlemen v players match at lord s a week later and alcock cannot have been too concerned either because shaw and two other rebels played for the north against the south at the oval a few days later on 18 july the match that had provoked the dispute was played at bradford tom emmett s xi defeated alfred shaw s xi by seven wickets all seven rebels played for shaw s team but none especially excelled in a low scoring match perhaps that was unsurprising as they played much less cricket than usual that summer although barnes 18 first class games and morley 16 first class games played only slightly less than normal that season the others had a substantially reduced workload shaw and flowers made twelve appearances each and selby eleven but scotton seven matches and shrewsbury three matches barely played even if those who were part of the mcc groundstaff would have been paid regularly each must have keenly felt the reduction in income professionals were paid by the match as might be expected the wider reaction to the dispute was mixed there is no real evidence of how the public felt about the situation but the press were split bell s life for example said it is very difficult to see how the conduct of the professionals can be excused the publication also observed that the rebels seemed to be trying to usurp the powers hitherto invested in the committees of the county clubs the demand for benefits it said displays a want of gratitude such opinions would have been widely shared among most county committees and among county members but other newspapers sided with the professionals the referee whose writer had clearly been in contact with the rebels said on 12 june it seems passing strange that a county which has benefited so much by the services of its professionals which owes its position in the world of the willow entirely to them should by means of its committee treat these same professionals with insult and contumely the writer suggested that the demands of the rebels may at first sight look like dictation but was merely a necessary effort at self protection he had also been told that the dispute was caused by a long period of petty tyranny culminating in the problems with the bradford match the writer suggested that the feeling of the cricketing public is almost entirely with the ill used professionals but doubtless both sides claimed to have the backing of that silent body publications with connections to the cricketing establishment unsurprisingly sided with nottinghamshire the cricketer s companion condemned the professionals these professionals formed themselves as it were into a union each member of which declined to take part in any of the matches unless all the members were specially retained for the entire season the committee very naturally objected to this dictation of terms by their employees and as being the persons to whom the conduct of affairs had been entrusted by the county club only exercised their common sense in holding to the view that they better than their opponents knew how to carry out the work the writer seemed to view it as a challenge to the established order and while he admitted that he did not know if there was any truth in suggestions that the professionals at nottinghamshire were badly treated he was critical of them for rebelling against the rightful authority of the club that had discovered trained and played them he was also critical of their refusal to heed the advice of perkins charles alcock image wikipedia writing in lilywhite s annual for 1882 alcock suggested that the success of the australian teams was to blame for the sudden and extraordinary change which took place in the bearing of professionals who had comported themselves most becomingly he suggested that the deliberate combination against recognised administration vitally affected the interests of any club of any importance other writers in the same annual were more equivocal while clearly siding with the authorities and arguing the rebels were trying to challenge recognised administration incog suggested that the mcc should have intervened far sooner to prevent the situation escalating the rest of the press particularly outside nottinghamshire mainly expressed regret that the matter had got out of hand and hoped that it would be resolved but to do so someone would have to back down nottinghamshire s committee clearly had no desire to do so and results justified their stance nottinghamshire lost the lancashire match heavily and lost the middlesex game too but the heavily disputed team defeated surrey by nine wickets in the next game without any of the rebels playing throughout most of june and july without the seven the county s results were mixed but far from disastrous of seven matches played at the height of the strike nottinghamshire won two lost four and drew one but improved steadily after the initial shock nottinghamshire had easily been the strongest county for some time and there was doubtless some relief among other teams that the relative weakness of the champion county offered them opportunities from the rebels viewpoint part of the problem was that the county had the depth to field a strong team without them young players came in while other professionals were either unwilling to rock the boat or happy to take advantage of the absence of the first team regulars for the seven who had stuck to the premise of all or none when they refused the offer which omitted scotton and flowers to defeat the committee it would have required all of the nottinghamshire professionals to join them that was never likely to happen given that for professional cricketers the game was their lifeline both they and their families depended on it for most of those employed by nottinghamshire risking their livelihood to support the demands of shaw and shrewsbury was not an attractive prospect and as it happened in the absence of the seven several new professionals were uncovered who went on to long and productive careers including william gunn william attewell and walter wright william gunn benefited from the absence of the strikers image wikipedia when it became clear that the committee would not change course and their long term cricketing futures were in jeopardy the rebels began to come in from the cold at the start of august flowers agreed to return to the nottinghamshire team having been pressured by holden as perhaps the least committed of the rebels presumably after offering an apology in his first match back in the team he took twelve wickets and was the key figure in a ten wicket win away at gloucestershire selby and barnes returned for the next game and scotton and morley for the match after that a practically full strength team drew the final three matches and nottinghamshire s final record for the season played 12 won 4 lost 4 drawn 4 was respectable enough to disguise a turbulent episode shaw and shrewsbury still held out refusing to play or perhaps not being given the option for the remainder of the season the cricketer s companion released before the 1882 season even suggested it was unlikely they would play for nottinghamshire again but the two admitted defeat at the start of the 1882 season shortly after returning from a tour of australia that they had organised they both sent letters to the committee the committee minuted their apology for their conduct in 1881 which was listed as being given with scotton and selby who had already returned and would almost certainly have had to apologise before doing so and were therefore reinstated in the eleven the seven rebels also signed an agreement to play in any notts county match it was a complete climbdown they received no concession except forgiveness there was no realistic prospect that nottinghamshire could have let the rebels win if they had other counties would have had to agree similar terms for their professionals as ric sissons wrote in the players 1988 no doubt every county secretary was relieved to see the strike collapse the strike therefore ended with holden and the nottinghamshire committee the undoubted victors although the seven were accepted back it is difficult to believe that there was no long term effect especially for scotton who was never quite as crucial to nottinghamshire as most of the other rebels and had not then fully established himself in the team it may not be a coincidence that despite playing for nottinghamshire for fifteen years he was never awarded a benefit and was unceremoniously dropped from the team in 1890 he killed himself three years later the other rebels were more fortunate but coincidentally or not they had to wait for the rewards that most professionals expected the first to receive a benefit was selby whose 1887 benefit was worth 184 but the amount was immediately seized by creditors as he was declared bankrupt that year shaw received 130 in 1892 shrewsbury 600 in 1893 barnes 350 in 1894 and flowers 457 in 1895 all of them had been with the county at least 17 years before the benefit was awarded an unusually long waiting period and the sums raised were dwarfed by those of other counties lancashire surrey and yorkshire professionals often received four figure sums in this period and bobby peel received 2 000 in 1894 yet perhaps for some of the rebels the break had positive outcomes shaw and shrewsbury used the time to organise a very long tour that winter encompassing north america australia and new zealand it was an all professional affair with a guaranteed fee of 200 four of the seven shaw shrewsbury scotton and selby were part of the tour which proved to be a controversial one suspicions of match fixing by the english team cannot have improved the image of those professionals in the eyes of the public however holden s time as secretary did not last much longer another australian team visited england in 1882 one of the matches was against nottinghamshire but as the visitors came off the field for lunch on the first day they discovered that holden had not ordered them a meal when challenged he said that as amateurs they should provide their own lunches he also overrode normal custom during the game by insisting that only he had the right to determine how long the roller should be used on the pitch between innings in the aftermath insults against holden were found chalked on the door of the australian hotel after the first day although he accused the team manager of having written them the words had originated from one of the supporters travelling with the australians this was one controversy too many and holden resigned on 1 july although he remained in the post for the rest of the season perhaps holden won the battle but lost his personal war shaw and shrewsbury continued to play for the county for many years until 1887 and 1902 respectively long after the former secretary s departure but for professional cricket in general the events of 1881 would have cast a long shadow
