the miles you drove to the plant on overhaul if you weren t working all 7 days then you would be driving home each weekend then on mondays you would drive back to the plant each time you drove to a plant on overhaul that wasn t your own plant or drove back home you were paid mileage i know at one point mileage paid 53 cents per mile i think it started out around 32 cents the miles were calculated from your plant to the plant where you were driving so if you drove from our plant to the plant in muskogee both ways you would be paid for 254 miles at 53 cents for each mile that comes to 134 62 each week for a minor overhaul that s an extra 538 48 for a major overhaul you would be paid 1 615 for mileage the fourth incentive was that you were paid overtime for the time it took to drive to and from the other plant that could actually be at double time for part of the time especially since the time you would drive to the plant would be early in the morning when power plant men were eligible for double time so someone that made 20 an hour normally would be paid 40 an hour for their driving time to the plant and 30 an hour driving home at the time the speed limit was only 55 miles per hour so it took 2 1 2 hours driving time to go to muskogee for instance this means that a person would be paid 175 each week for driving to and fro during a minor overhaul this adds up to 700 for a major overhaul it would be 2 100 you can see that power plant men that had to work in the boilers welding boiler tubes might be able to make over 30 000 extra by going to a major overhaul a regular electrician working 5 days each week and 10 hours per day could make an extra 10 000 ok that s the end of all the boring calculations about the extra pay the first year i was eligible to go on an overhaul was in the fall of 1984 bill bennett sent me on overhaul to muskogee then the next year in 1985 bill bennett sent me to muskogee for a minor overhaul in october then to horseshoe plant for another minor overhaul shortly after that in november and december i finished the horseshoe plant overhaul on december 20 the day before i was married then in the spring bill bennett sent me to the mustang plant on a major overhaul where i stayed in oklahoma city for 3 months other electricians were not happy that i had gone away on 3 overhauls in one season and one the year before they were missing out on a lot of extra pay there was one major difference when it came to sending me on overhaul i was only making about 10 per hour and they were making around 20 so it was a lot cheaper to send me bill bennett was helping me make enough money so that i could go on a honeymoon i spent every last dime i had to take my wife to europe for 3 weeks i was counting on the paycheck i was going to receive while i was gone to completely pay for our trip then when i came back from our honeymoon our plant started an overhaul when that was finished bill bennett sent me to mustang for 3 months the good thing about that was that my wife was living in oklahoma city while she was finishing her last semester at oklahoma university nursing school so i was able to live with her while i was on overhaul this worked out for me because no one wanted me to go on an overhaul after that for the next few years and i didn t want to i wanted to stay home with my wife and let someone else travel across oklahoma to spend the week living in a trailer one of the great benefits of going to another plant on overhaul was that you met other electricians from all the other plants i became very good friends with some of the men from other plants i have mentioned some of them in previous power plant posts i stayed with steve trammell from horseshoe plant in a trailer at the muskogee plant where since that time we refer to each other as roomie see the post something in the water at the muskogee power plant for more about my time during that overhaul another lifelong friend i made was when i was working at horseshoe plant just before i was married that s where i worked for bob kennedy see the post bobbin along with bob kennedy so what happened when i left the power plant to work for dell needless to say dell didn t have overhauls they did have these things called moratoriums every three months they had minor moratoriums and a major moratorium sounds familiar doesn t it well it isn t moratoriums aren t where everyone works extra hard to try to get their work done by a certain date no moratoriums are when you can t put anything in production because you don t want to do anything to upset the apple cart maybe someday i will write a post about the folly of moratoriums i m writing myself a note when i went to work for dell i became a salary employee that means no overtime when i started at dell i was making 1 000 less a year than my base salary at the power plant since at the plant i was making at least 10 000 to 15 000 more a year in overtime then i had to adjust to the decrease in salary the first few years i worked there i had planned on this and that was why i put 50 down on my house so that the monthly payments were something i could afford just because dell didn t have overhauls that didn t mean that they didn t send you to go work somewhere else around the world in the post two weeks ago i mentioned that i went to a number of other cities for training see the post power plant learning to dell education there were a few times when i was sent across the world to work with others in order to accomplish something some people were constantly travelling around the world for work the first time i was sent to the other side of the world was in april 2007 i was sent to penang malaysia i had to go there to train the it support people there how to support the timekeeping application i wrote a very long post about my trip see the very long post letters to the power plant 126 travelin at dell one of the first things my manager told me to do when i arrived at dell was to go online and order a corporate card this was a regular credit card that you were supposed to use when you had expenses that the company should be paying because we were using a corporate card we didn t need a per diem when you were on a trip and you went out to dinner you just whipped out the corporate card and voila the company would pay for it you still had to go in the concur application and fill out your expense report so no overtime no per diem when i was on a trip i could still put mileage on an expense report but when i was traveling far i would fly there using the expense report app to help me book the airline and rent a car so generally no mileage that means that all the perks you would get by working somewhere else on an overhaul in the electric company didn t translate over to working at dell maybe later i ll explain the difference with filling out an expense report at dell i ll write myself another note there was one great perk that did translate that was the ability to make new friends when you traveled to another location and worked with people from around the world i want to share one short story about a time when i made a new friend first i ll mention that just like when working at the power plant where people would come from other plants to work at our plant people often traveled to round rock texas to work with us so i was able to make friends with coworkers from india malaysia and brazil that came to work with me at various times just to name one from each of those countries for now i ll mention others later venkatesh years working in the power plant in north central oklahoma i had learned a special skill let me give you an example one time when i was in penang malaysia and we were out eating dinner in a malaysian mall when we were finished with our dinner we were walking around the mall and this one lady was obviously done with her drink and began looking around for a place to throw away her trash this other guy spotted a trash can at the same moment i did we momentary locked eyes and then grabbed for her cup i was a little faster so i was able to grab the cup before he did he quickly grabbed a wrapper she was carrying in her other hand and we raced to be the first to throw away the trash nothing was said we instantly understood each other do you see what i mean about how working in a power plant had honed my skills weren t we always constantly aware of how we might help out someone in need the safety slogan look out for the other guy was ingrained in our subconsciousness from that moment on vijayan chengaloor and i were the close friends that was all it took vijayan chengaloor i can go 8 years without talking to vijayan but when i do it s just like we saw each other yesterday i only personally met vijayan that one week in malaysia when he came from india to work with us to gather requirements for the expense reporting tool concur for the asian countries people came from india china philippines indonesia and australia where we gathered the requirements to add them to concur one other quick side story during this same trip we stayed in a hotel called the eastin hotel it was next to the queensbay mall in the lobby of the hotel they had a bar that had a lady that would sing songs if you requested them so while we were sitting there listening to her sing american songs i filled out a request to have her sing fernando by abba i m sure you know the one here is the youtube video yeah i was being rotten making this small asian singer sing fernando i ll have to say that she did a good job the next morning however while we were riding in a shuttle that took people from a lot of different companies from the hotel to various business in the business park where dell had their office word had gotten out that i was the one that requested that the singer should sing fernando a couple of guys from some other companies were razzing me about how cruel i had been making the singer sing that song i shrugged and with a serious look on my face i said that is all in the past i believe in looking forward to the future one guy replied that i must be an excellent manager because that sounded just like something a great manager would say most of the shuttle was laughing after i said that it seemed that someone even offered me a job after they said we need more managers at our company like you this reminded me of the day i was offered a job when i was on the labor crew and the porta potty company was working with us on sucking out a sump pit after we had been working all afternoon the boss of the vacuum company said hey we need more guys like you how would you like to come work for us i thought yeah like that s going to happen i m already working for the best company in the world now it was 27 years later and i was still working for the best company in the world this time it was dell so anyway you can see that while we had all that fun living in the trailers down by the river at the muskogee power plant during overhaul and going out to eat frog legs every wednesday in wagner i was able to bring some of that levity to the corporate suits on the worked at the power plant from 1979 to 2001 when i wasn t living in ponca city there were countless days when i would wake up in the morning and drive my honda civic down to the frontier lanes bowling alley where they had a large parking lot that was never full this was where i met with my carpooling buddies on our way to the power plant 21 miles north on highway 177 even in years when we met at different locations such as at a church parking lot or in front of fred turner s house no matter where our starting point we always ended up taking highway 177 north out of stillwater oklahoma travelling toward ponca city to the power plant sooner power plant during the thousands of times we traveled this route we saw the same countryside each time over the years we would watch the trees as they gradually grew taller we watched as wheat would grow up in fields then combines would come and harvest it then it would repeat over and over each year we watched as a small gas station opened then after passing by that gasoline station year after year we would see it eventually go out of business someone eventually surrounded it with a security fence then gradually vines would encompass the building and drag it back down into the ground after it became an empty shell this is the old gas station today throughout all of the cycles of growing and collapsing and growing again we continued on our way to and fro north and south down highway 177 depending on the time of the year we would be traveling during daylight at other times it would be dark back and forth as it is under normal circumstances the people on the roads in north central oklahoma are friendly drivers most of them travelling between ponca city and stillwater in the morning and evening are on their way to work so each morning as we travelled north if you looked into the eyes of those driving in the other lane going south you would notice that most of them had a blank stare as their minds were busy planning their days day after day year after year you begin to notice that since you are travelling at the same time of day each time those you pass going south are the same people here comes the guy
