matches the tour was an enormous cricketing and financial success and a follow up was organised in 1880 both tours and australian tours of england for many years to come were organised on the basis that the players who formed a private company and collectively contributed money to pay the initial tour expenses shared all profits between themselves this success grated with some english professionals including shaw and shrewsbury who resented the official amateur status of the australians with all its attendant respect and honour at a time when they were pocketing large sums of money one early clash came during the 1878 tour when a match was arranged at the oval between the touring team and a team of leading professionals organised by shaw most of whom had been part of the all professional tour of australia in 1876 77 organised by james lillywhite which included the retrospectively recognised first ever test match but after the match had been publicised nine of the professionals publicly withdrew via a letter to the sporting times their reason was that they had asked for a fee of 20 which the english team of 1876 77 had paid to australians in an equivalent match on their tour but the australians had only offered 10 the signatories of the letter were harry jupp and ted pooley of surrey and seven nottinghamshire players shaw shrewsbury william oscroft john selby fred morley william barnes and wilfred flowers having secured a substitute team for the oval match the australians eventually paid the replacement players 20 instead of the agreed 10 the against them part of the reason was a quasi official cold shouldering by the county clubs a result of the hostility faced by an english touring team led by lord harris in 1878 79 during a match at sydney several english players including harris himself had been struck by spectators during a pitch invasion arising from unhappiness over umpiring therefore harris openly and deliberately ignored the 1880 team for the first part of the season and the establishment followed his lead but during the season relations thawed to the point that a representative match subsequently recognised as the first test match played in england was organised in early september in the aftermath of that very successful game and because the australians had proven an attraction for spectators there was a rush to arrange fixtures nottinghamshire were eager to organise a game but holden and the australians could not agree on financial terms and so the matter drifted in the meantime the owners of the park avenue ground in bradford were keen to host the australians and they asked shaw and shrewsbury to organise a team to face them this match caused a crucial rupture in nottinghamshire cricket the bradford authorities had initially planned a match between yorkshire and nottinghamshire and approached holden to arrange something when holden was uncooperative they invited the australians instead who were keen to return to bradford having had an excellent reception when they played there earlier in the tour against a bradford xviii and had been highly complementary about the pitch because of holden s hesitance the bradford authorities asked shaw and shrewsbury to bring their own nottinghamshire team if they could not secure the full eleven it was arranged that yorkshire players would be available to make up numbers such a background was certain to irritate holden but there was little he could do in the end a north of england xi played the australians newspapers used various titles including shaw and shrewsbury s team even though yorkshire s tom emmett captained the side but historians have labelled the team as the players of the north the match was a rain affected draw albeit very much in favour of the australians details of the arrangements for the bradford game are scarce but it is likely that the all professional team pocketed a healthy share of the gate receipts and in the interim holden had finally agreed terms with the australians after playing in bradford they travelled to play the official nottinghamshire team the normal wage for a nottinghamshire professional at the time was 5 for a home match with a potential win bonus of 1 as the australians were expected to take away at least 19 each shaw shrewsbury and five other professionals stated they would only play in the game if they received 20 holden had little choice but to accept or he would have been unable to fulfil the fixture but he paid the other four professionals who had not been part of the group holding out for more money 21 for playing in the game to compound the insult he informed the press that he had done so after such a breakdown in relationships deeper trouble was perhaps inevitable and it took just a small spark the following year to ignite a dispute variously known as the nottinghamshire strike or the nottinghamshire schism shaw and shrewsbury encouraged by the success of their bradford game against the australians attempted to organise another game at the ground for the 1881 season this time it would have been between the full nottinghamshire team and a yorkshire side which had been the original desire of the bradford authorities and while the arguments in 1880 had played out away from the public the correspondence over this matter was released to the press by shaw and shrewsbury at the start of june 1881 giving a very full picture of the background to the schism in fact much of the dispute was carried out by letter which provides a very full picture of what took place what began as an apparently easily resolvable question over the name of a team in an unimportant match spiralled into the question of who ran nottinghamshire cricket financial security for professionals and how much say those cricketers had in their own destinies on 9 february 1881 holden wrote to shaw and shrewsbury i have been informed that you have arranged or are about to arrange a match nottinghamshire v yorkshire to be played at bradford i therefore think it best to write at once and say that the nottinghamshire committee strongly and decidedly object to any county match being arranged by anybody except those home and home matches arranged at the annual meeting of county secretaries at lord s shaw and shrewsbury replied three days later to assure holden that it was simply a case that nottinghamshire s players were to be involved and that it was not in any sense an official nottinghamshire match after a meeting of the nottinghamshire committee on 14 february holden wrote to inform the two professionals that the objection was to the use of the name nottinghamshire in relation to the team the committee insisted that they were the sole authority to organise nottinghamshire matches the matter rested for two weeks before shaw and shrewsbury replied that they had informed the bradford authorities but were still awaiting a reply holden replied by return of post urging that the matter be settled before the next meeting of the committee but apparently no answer was forthcoming yet for all the sharpness of the correspondence a new cricket season was approaching and routine business continued holden wrote to shaw and shrewsbury on 16 march asking if they would be available for the easter monday match between nottinghamshire and a colts team in which they usually played for free he also inquired if they agreed to play for the county in any match for which you may be selected on the standard terms of 5 or 6 for a win when the correspondence later appeared in the press this mundane administrative letter was printed alongside the rest but professionals at most counties would have regularly received similar communications both shaw and shrewsbury replied that they would be available on the usual terms at this stage nothing appeared irretrievably broken on 26 march shaw and shrewsbury finally replied to holden and the committee about the bradford match they suggested there were several precedents for such a game of which they listed only one a match played in huddersfield and organised by richard daft in 1873 and listed as nottinghamshire v yorkshire which was not part of the official county programme acknowledged by the then secretary they wondered if county members and players were aware that the rules had been changed since that time and asked whether holden had been aware of this precedent when he wrote to them they concluded by informing nottinghamshire that the bradford club declines to alter the title of the match the argument was not the most robust the nottinghamshire guardian which published the correspondence in june observed that the 1873 match had been the subject of protest and objection and no similar games had been played since holden wrote back on 29 march to ask if they intended to style the match nottinghamshire v yorkshire against the wishes of the committee they replied immediately before holden s deadline of noon the following day to restate their position and make clear the title of the match was the choice of the bradford club and they have no choice in the matter after a meeting of the committee holden replied the same day to inform them that no players who appeared in such a match would be selected by nottinghamshire at the same time each nottinghamshire professional was sent a letter informing them that the conditions of engagement of all county players all counties had something similar which professionals were required to sign before playing had been altered to include a new provision i undertake not to accept an engagement to play in any county match styled nottinghamshire v any other county such match not having been arranged by the county committee the players were required to sign and return a document accepting the new terms if shaw and shrewsbury had relied on a weak argument in citing the 1873 match the actions of the committee at this point revealed their own weakness there had been no provision in the rules for players to forbid them appearing for rival nottinghamshire teams shaw and shrewsbury could not have broken any formal and therefore legally enforceable rules but already the dispute had moved beyond the particular issue of that bradford match john selby image wikipedia there was a cricket in conflict 1984 during the game shaw and shrewsbury requested a meeting in the trent bridge pavilion with any three of the committee as long as holden was not present they were to be joined by their team mate john selby perhaps the addition of selby was to balance out the proposed number of committee members but the plan was rejected by the committee holden later denied having heard of any such proposal negotiations continued until a meeting was agreed according to holden shaw and shrewsbury insisted it could not be held in his office a provision he reluctantly accepted but later expressed regret over instead it took place at nottingham town hall on 23 april at this meeting shaw shrewsbury and selby handed over a letter offering their own terms it had been signed by seven nottinghamshire professionals shaw shrewsbury and selby had been joined by fred morley william barnes william scotton and wilfred flowers there were three demands the first largely concerned shaw and shrewsbury the match at bradford was to go ahead under the name nottinghamshire v yorkshire but the others went beyond that and would have made committees of other counties sit up and take notice fred the state of county finances in later years ten years service became the generally accepted norm but it remained an expectation rather than an entitlement guaranteed benefits were however a common element in professional contracts at the lower level of club cricket press rumours suggested that the inclusion of this final element was a response to a reported remark of holden that he would withhold benefits from the seven he later told the nottinghamshire guardian that he had made no such remark each side now suspected the other of acting out of retribution the players interpreted holden s stance on benefits as an attempt to punish the committee saw the demand as a challenge to authority positions had hardened what had begun as an argument over the title of a match at bradford had become a question of control and security in the newly amateur dominated world of english cricket neither side was willing to back down the last serious challenge to amateur control was under way
