girl scout cookies for avalie they had a huge suitcase each which would come back to bite them later as they dragged their luggage around london and oxford while we waited for our flight i took them into the admirals club so they could experience that bit of fun melaina waited out in the terminal and she ran into her friend ellen who happened to be on our flight tuell and livian left on a direct flight about three hours after we did and arrived in london about 30 minutes before us on our flight to jfk we ended up seated by a group of 15 older couples going to israel for a tour a very country guy next to me kept up a running commentary the whole flight including showing me pictures of his granddaughter killing a feral hog so that was fun we landed and had just over an hour till our connecting flight to london the englerts were on different flight to london so we said goodbye and melaina and i went to the admirals club to get her some cheese silly girl while they found dinner we had booked business class for this flight with nice lay flat seats next to each other we both watched a movie and then tried to get some sleep we arrived at heathrow sunday morning at 8 30 and went through customs while trying to connect to wifi to text tuell and livian who were waiting at baggage claim the englerts came in 30 minutes later to a different terminal so to make things easier for them we four took a train over to their terminal and waited just outside the tube station while they waited for their luggage once we were all finally reunited we spent the next 1 5 hours dragging our suitcases around the tube one of the main lines was closed for construction so we had to rethink how to get to the station to catch our train to oxford we finally made it to the train unfortunately it was very crowded especially with luggage and we were packed into a six pack of seats facing each other it was not the most pleasant ride but we got to see sheep horses and cows in pretty meadows along the way after some confusion finding our way out of the oxford train station we finally made it to oxford and avalie avalie met us at the station in oxford and she led us along the canal about one mile in some heavy mist to our airbnb we put down our luggage and walked to vinny s for a late 3 p m lunch shanna and lauren stayed in a different hotel so they met us there too once they checked in we sat outside and it felt so good to sit and eat after a long night day of travel after lunch we walked to the acu house for a tour then back to our flat for an hour of rest melaina stayed behind while we went to dinner at white rabbit pizza where we accidentally sat next to fellow student drew and his parents who were there too after dinner we walked to the city center stopped at the grocery store for a few things and then avalie came back to our hotel with us and stayed over an hour chatting and showing us some of her pictures it was wonderful to see her and hear her adventures we got tired pretty early because of the six hour time change so we sent her on her way with some cookies and jellybeans to share with her flat mates while we showered and went to bed by 10 30 step count for the day just under 20 000 monday we awoke to a misty rain which was pretty much constant the whole week we got used to being consistently a bit cold and wet that week we all met up on a central corner and then avalie walked us over to knoops for hot chocolate and then crosstown for donuts she had class at 11 so she walked back while we poked around the shops admired the cool architecture and looked for souvenirs we ventured into a covered market that avalie had suggested visited a huge bookstore called blackwells and walked around the boudlien library courtyard once avalie was finished with her classes she met us at blackwells and we went to the mall for lunch after lunch we walked back to our flat for a rest with avalie parting ways with us at tesco as she needed some groceries a little side note livian was obsessed with all the moss growing on everything and started collecting bits of it everywhere we went her plan was to create a moss terrarium with it once we got home cool after a much needed hour nap to help us deal with the time change we walked in the rain to a restaurant called victoria for dinner their meat pies were delicious and we had an cozy upstairs room all to ourselves although we had to fit all seven of us around two tiny tables we tried to stop for ice cream on the way back but the place closed right as we got there bummer we went back to our flat to hang out with avalie and do a load of laundry which took 2 5 hours to wash and then had to hang to dry because there was no dryer step count 17 000 tuesday was a clear but cold day perfect for a day trip to bath avalie had class today so she stayed in oxford the bus we wanted to take to the train station was running late so we all speed walked to the train station at the last minute stressful we had one transfer and then arrived to frigid 38 degree temps we first walked to pulteney bridge one of only four bridges with shops on both sides over the water then we walked down the steps and along the canal and played on a cement maze nearby back on the bridge i got hot tea with milk and we poked around in some of the shops we walked by bath abbey and the entrance to the roman baths on our way to find lunch there was a lady singing opera outside the baths which was pretty cool except she was wearing a kiss inspired shirt that had cats representing the band i found the juxtaposition of opera and kiss pretty amusing anyway for lunch tuell and i had fish and chips with mashed peas and hot tea and livian and melaina got pizza take away at a nearby pub after lunch shanna and lauren did some shopping while we walked through bath abbey then we met at 2 00 for a tour of the roman baths the baths were so intricate there were so many different rooms and pools with various functions for the tour there were numbered stations at various places and you could punch in the number on a phone they provided and listen to the description of what you were seeing melaina and livian were not really into it and got bored quickly so they sat by the main pool a lot of the time we spent about an hour wandering the baths and then shanna lauren and melaina treated themselves to a spa they were hoping it would be relaxing but i think they were all a bit disappointed because it was crowded and the water was only lukewarm however they still were glad for the experience and especially enjoyed the pool on the roof with an amazing view of the city while they were at the spa tuell livian and i walked uphill to the royal crescent as well as passed by the jane austin museum where avalie and her friends had visited a couple weeks before unfortunately on the way back down the hill those super cool but terribly uneven cobblestones did a number on my knee something in my knee popped and then it immediately starting swelling not great at any time but especially not when you still have 3 5 days of a trip left while we waited for the spa goers to finish we found a coffee shop to hang out in to rest our feet and get out of the cold once we met up with them again we decided to end our day a little early and caught an earlier train back to oxford the trains were really crowded so we didn t get to sit together but by this time we were all so tired that we didn t really care once back in oxford we walked through the rain to wendy s for dinner then took a short bus ride on a double decker back to our flat for showers and bed my knee gave me trouble that night even multiple doses of advil didn t help dull the pain enough to sleep steps 19 100 wednesday we had planned on taking a day trip to blenheim palace but decided to hang around oxford instead we felt like our time in oxford was going too fast and we weren t going to get to see everything we had hoped avalie had class until 12 30 so tuell and livian spent the morning touring a couple of the colleges christ church and magdalene and also were kind enough to track down a knee compression sleeve for me to try to keep the swelling under control melaina opted to stay at our flat and sleep and because of my severely swollen knee i stayed behind too and iced elevated avalie walked us over to the summertown suburb and we had lunch at gail s followed by crepes and gelato at a cute little store across the street that afternoon we walked over to port meadow a park about half a mile from the acu house that features some gorgeous meadows and the river thames flowing through it avalie had gushed about this park being her favorite place so we were excited to get to see it and even though it rained on us the whole time it was worth it because there were more than 20 horses out in the fields apparently the owners live nearby and let their horses roam freely on occasion and we happened to be there at the right time they were so fun they were not shy at all they licked our coats nuzzled our hands one feisty one kept pushing into our faces and one subdued mellow guy almost fell asleep while we petted his face and neck it was so cool but so cold and wet we decided to celebrate avalie s 20th birthday early while in oxford shanna and lauren had brought avalie some real dr pepper from the states as their gift apparently the dr pepper they have in england doesn t taste the same isn t as sweet she was a happy girl after our frolic with the horses we went back to our flat so livian could nap and i could elevate my very swollen knee melaina wanted to go back into town to get a souvenir so she and tuell rode the bus back to the city center the store she wanted to go to was closed but she found a sweatshirt in another store so all was not lost that evening we took the bus to the city center for avalie s birthday dinner at wig and pen steak and ale pie yum weirdly enough once again we ran into someone from the study abroad group but this time it was her professor dr womble and his family then we walked in the rain and cold to swoon for gelato we decided to catch the bus back so while we waited for the next bus avalie took us into tesco to show us where she grocery shops she then came back with us to our flat to get our leftover food as we were headed to london in the morning steps 15 500 thursday was our day to head to london but we had heard that the train workers were holding a strike and the train schedule was not running normally we were scheduled for a 10 30 train that morning and were worried we either wouldn t get on or would have to stand the whole 1 5 hours fortunately except for missing our bus to the oxford station we caught a second one after a little speed walking all went well the train was not full and we had an easy on off we did have one incident at our transfer station of a man stealing from a store on the platform assaulting a worker and then jumping on our train to hide but after much shouting and lots of random cops coming onto our train we were on our way again sheep shanna and lauren left oxford an hour earlier than us because they had a lot they wanted to do in london since we had been there before we didn t feel the need to go to all the usual tourist spots they got to the hotel we all were booked in and freaked out a bit apparently it was too dirty and not at all what they were expecting they left their luggage in the room and met us at marylbone station to figure out what to do they were super stressed and were really thankful we mostly tuell could help make decisions after some panicked searching on our phones we each found nicer rooms although not at same hotel after cancelling our other reservations our four went to our hotel and dropped our bags off shanna and lauren went back to get their bags then took a bus to their new hotel and checked in they met us for lunch at moreish cafe deli where i think i was the only one happy with my meal can t go wrong with fish and chips we then walked to kings cross station and visited platform 9 3 4 the harry potter store and then sat at a charging station for a while to recharge our phones after that we split up our four went to the british library next door where there were so many cool things beatles handwritten notes for their songs chaucer original texts religious texts and the magna carta after our romp through the museum we checked into our hotel and the girls and i crashed tuell wasn t completely exhausted so he went by himself to trafalgar square and the national museum the girls and i rested and i elevated my knee till 6 then it was off to piccadilly circus london s version of times square for dinner we had shakes and fries at shake shack because none of us was hungry enough for a meal then met up with shanna and lauren after our snack we all visited the huge four story m n m store then rode the tube back to our hotels steps 15 700 shanna was very unsure of the tube they ended up taking the bus most places here tuell is trying to explain to her how the tube works friday was the day avalie was able to come hang with us so she took the 10 a m train to london while we waited for her our four visited the british museum again we went there the last time we were in london but there was so much to see that we wanted to hit it again there was a long line to get in and it was raining pretty hard so we were very wet by the time we got in melaina and i got bored pretty quickly so we set a meeting time place it s easy to get lost separated and she and i went down to the atrium to hang out and munch on muffins avalie joined us around 11 30 and everyone but melaina toured more exhibits during this time shanna and lauren were busy marking things off their bucket list changing of the guards buckingham palace etc i found me and my siblings in this exhibit and we found avalie in this one once everyone was done at the museum we walked down museum street to gio s cafe for lunch it was a tiny place but the food was pretty good it also had finally stopped raining yay after lunch we took the tube to buckingham palace then walked through hyde park enjoying the ducks squirrels and even a pelican after a bit of a rest on the benches there we decided to do our own little walking tour to hit all the big tourist spots westminster abbey big ben parliament buildings and the london eye there were too many people to go on the bridge over the thames so we kept walking to trafalgar square to do some souvenir shopping by the time we got there we were tired and needed to sit so we found a spot in front of the national museum where we listened to some really good street performers unfortunately a very drunk homeless guy decided he liked me sat down about five feet in front of me and stared at me oddly his friend came over and told us he was harmless but it was so weird that we all got up to leave my drunk friend held out his hand like he was going to hand me something so like a dummy i put my hand out and he kissed the bac...
