didi 120gsc shorthanded racing version of didi 120 i designed the didi 120 for david edmiston of sydney australia as a covid project he built his passion xi to this design and launched it last year a few months after the launch of passion xi i was contacted by a sailor in romania victor mora asking about potential modifications to make it suitable for competing in the 2031 edition of the global solo challenge this is a non stop single handed race around the world via the 5 great capes along with the changes that victor wanted i added some variations of my own to make her more comfortable for racing through the southern ocean the resulting boat is the didi 120gsc and the design is now complete and ready for building changes made from the base design are a thicker skin with a layer of biaxial glass on the outside a layer of kevlar in the crash zone 4 watertight bulkheads a pilothouse configuration with dodger cuddy over the front of the cockpit and interior accommodation optimized finished and fair hull she is a didi 40cr with the stern topsides flared out to provide a wider aft end to the deck but with the same underbody david is a very competent and careful builder who commissioned the design modification in 2014 and launched her in early 2017 passion x is fully certified for ocean racing by the australian sailing authorities and was raced in the sydney and australian east coast area until the world was shut down by the covid pandemic that included shutting down sailboat racing and rather than sitting at home wasting time david commissioned a new design circumnavigation via the 5 great capes and the sothern ocean bohdana grew up with dinghies and as a child was ukrainian champion in optimists her dad philip moved into larger and more capable boats for ocean sailing and built a didi 34 in kiev named estra which he launched in 2012 philip used estra for racing local cruising on the black sea and among the greek islands as well as for charter work since start of the war with russia she has been out of the water in mykolaiv bohdana will transport estra by road to romania before sailing to the start point for the circumnavigation in spain didi 34 estra bohdana is an accomplished sailor with multiple trans atlantic voyages patagonia and cape horn under her belt we will liaise during the preparation of her boat about potential upgrades to ready
