was a fish and chip dealer working for himself rachel was listed as assisting him in the business in 1912 moss apparently had another daughter touchingly named minnie after his first wife she was listed as his daughter on the 1921 census and when she married in 1935 she named moss as her father however minnie s birth records indicate that she was actually moss s granddaughter her mother was the 18 year old jessica beatrice moss the younger of moss s two surviving children the last trace of moss as a player comes when in 1914 padiham applied to the league for permission to play him as an amateur that season but it was denied because he had played for read cricket club as a professional in 1913 moss s cricketing retirement was not a long one at the time of the 1921 census moss his wife and their daughter minnie lived in featherstone where he was working as a boot maker by then moss s son samuel ernest moss had begun to play professional cricket himself he followed in his father s footsteps by first playing for batley he also seems to have been monitored by yorkshire one report suggested that he had played for the yorkshire second eleven although there is no record that he did so in any official matches on 7 august 1923 a bank holiday monday rachel moss and jessica moss had travelled to watch ernest play for batley moss had remained in featherstone and was on his way to watch the local yorkshire council match between featherstone and whitworth to reach the ground required passing over a railway track and while moss was using the designated crossing point at churchfields he seems to have been distracted by the events on the cricket field and stopped to watch by then he was very deaf and therefore did not hear an approaching train it struck him and knocked him eight or nine yards his skull was fractured and he died instantly police informed his wife and daughter what had happened the inquest heard how the crossing was notoriously dangerous and wisden despite never having played first class cricket the almanack stated that moss was reputed to have been at one time the fastest bowler in england and mentioned the two occasions on which he took all ten wickets for padiham and barnsley no mention was made of the doubts regarding his bowling action other obituaries also recalled the notion that he was the fastest bowler in england but such opinions had been given in print since at least 1899 for example in the manchester evening chronicle the issue of moss s bowling action was never satisfactorily settled and with his tragic death it ceased to matter but given his fame or notoriety a great deal was written about him and his bowling style both during and after his career the most thorough description of his bowling came in a sympathetic article published in the lancashire daily post in 1899 the writer noted that like the majority of our fast trundlers his delivery is not above suspicion and the terrific pace which he gets up at times completely bewilders the average spectator and perhaps the average batsman too but unlike other pace bowlers the article observed that moss was 5ft 9in slightly above average for the time but not tall and was not particularly broad or thick set but his shoulders are open and free and his lithe sinewy frame gives one the impression that he is possessed of more than ordinary strength and staying power the writer described how he delivered the ball he does not take a particularly fast or lengthy run but upon reaching the wicket he indulges in a peculiar twist his arm comes round like lightning and if you are facing him at the wickets the ball is past the stumps before you can realise it his deliveries keep low as a rule he does not bump or pitch short and to obtain wickets depends more upon upsetting the pulpits stumps than upon catches in the slips it is the pace that kills and he can bowl a surprisingly long time before tiring it was this peculiar twist that gave rise to suspicion about his action other writers also noted moss s preference for aiming at the stumps and the unusually high proportion of his wickets that were bowled given his pace when moss struck the stumps the results were often spectacular stories were legion one said that at accrington he bowled a batter with a delivery so fast that the bails landed on the adjoining railway line some landlords took to displaying sets of stumps that he had shattered in their public houses playing upon his fame and notoriety a writer for the haslingden gazette recalled at the time of moss s death the amusement that used to be caused by a batter only just playing the stroke when his stumps had already gone flying such was moss s speed he discussed the fairness of moss s delivery but in the calmer atmosphere of 1923 when throwing was no longer the issue it had been he concluded that it had been moss s pace that raised questions because many slow bowlers had a more jerky delivery he suggested that the umpire who had no balled moss at bacup at burnley later apologised to moss and told him that he had been the dupe of others who wanted to check the fast bowler s career while this story might be slightly questionable the writer also added moss was always respectful to umpires for there is no doubt that he dreaded their capricious ruling once a bowler is marked by some umpire seeking notoriety then he is a marked man for the fancy seems to spread an article in the blackburn times in 1901 at the height of the controversy discussed moss the writer another to class moss as probably the fastest bowler playing had heard one old cricketer once suggest that moss got nine out of ten of his wickets through sheer funking by batsmen and the writer shared the view that the opposition were intimidated by moss s pace into playing poorly he also suggested that any bowler of moss s pace would have to throw openly and indisputably this had not been the case with moss he had heard a prominent lancashire amateur declare with emphasis that moss is the finest bowler in the world moss around 1894 the same writer also had a story about an amateur in the lancashire league facing moss for the first time due to come in at number six he had watched with mounting horror as moss bowled several of his team mates and had asked for advice how to play such pace one old player suggested as soon as ever you see moss lift his foot to run to the wicket strike blamed hard and perhaps you will be in time the trembling player eventually made his way to the wicket but was bowled first ball by moss when he returned to the pavilion he said ruefully to the old player well i struck before he commenced his run but by jove i was a lot too late another tale in this article was of a mother watching her son playing his first lancashire league game and having seen moss bowl begged him not to bat in this case the son scored 26 moss s record in the lancashire league is the only measure by which he can be compared to other good players the standard in the other leagues in which he later played was doubtless not especially high but in the lancashire league he played with and against other bowlers who went on to or had already played county and test cricket in 114 matches between 1894 and 1900 moss took 552 wickets at 7 29 of all the bowlers who have taken over 500 wickets in the lancashire league he has by far the lowest bowling average the next best is the 8 54 of walter hall a medium paced bowler who played between 1893 and 1907 and had a mediocre first class career for derbyshire in the 1880s the english test bowler cec parkin averaged 8 74 between 1910 and 1934 the yorkshire spinner ernest smith averaged 8 83 between 1921 and 1932 and s f barnes averaged 8 91 between 1895 and 1933 no one else with over 500 wickets has averaged below nine across their career it could be argued with some validity that pitches got better as time went on and that it was a greater achievement to have a slightly higher average in the 1920s but even so no contemporary of moss could match him in the same conditions moss remained a legend after his death and was mentioned fairly frequently in the press whenever the question of the fastest bowler emerged he was fondly remembered but his family never quite managed happy endings his daughter jessica died not long after him in 1924 she had been working as a tailor in padiham and never married she was a victim of an influenza epidemic she was one of sixty deaths in the burnley area from the illness in a single week his son ernest never quite made it with yorkshire but he managed something his father never did he played a single first class match for glamorgan in 1923 he also played regularly in the lancashire league from 1924 until 1932 representing todmorden and ramsbottom he took 193 wickets in 72 matches at 11 70 he too died young at the age of 42 in 1934 three years later moss s second wife rachel died in pontefract in 1937 aged 68 his granddaughter minnie only 12 when her real mother died married in 1935 had at least one child of her own and lived until 1979 by then moss had long been forgotten few cricketers who have never played at first class level are remembered for long but moss was one of a handful whose reputations persist after their retirement because there cannot have been many the opposition as such he was spotted by lancashire county cricket club and engaged on the groundstaff although he played for the county second eleven he was not quite as successful as might have been hoped but a bigger issue at a time when there was renewed scrutiny of the fairness of bowling actions was the widely held suspicion that he was throwing rather than bowling the ball despite later rumour these suspicions played no part in his departure from lancashire but with a growing family to support moss gravitated towards the well paid lancashire league where he was an immediate success for haslingden in 1896 taking countless wickets and devastating the opposition without anyone expressing any concern over his bowling action after a falling out with haslingden over his treatment during an injury he signed for bacup for the 1897 season and continued to sweep batters aside moss was re signed by bacup and because the questions over his bowling action had apparently been satisfied no one publicly raised doubts in 1896 or 1897 the stage was set for a long and successful league career and yet three years later moss played his final match in the lancashire league and not long after he was quietly banned by the league committee such a rapid fall was not connected to cricketing success because moss was extraordinarily successful his record surpasses any cricketer to play in the lancashire league instead the seeds of his downfall were sewn thousands of miles away in a melbourne test match when the umpire jim phillips no balled the australian fast bower ernie jones in january 1898 phillips had taken action to address growing complaints about the legitimacy of bowling actions among the australian test team but there were an equal number of questions over english bowlers inspired by the example of phillips who was also an umpire in county cricket there was a crackdown in the subsequent english cricket season there were four instances of a bowler being no balled for throwing in the 1898 county championship albeit that three of them involved c b fry by four different umpires newspapers covered the matter minutely and there was endless discussion over the rights and wrongs of the situation in such an atmosphere it was inevitable that moss would come under increased scrutiny and many of those issues occupying national newspapers were rehearsed in the coverage of the lancashire league in 1898 moss took 95 wickets for bacup at 6 00 he headed the bowling averages for regular bowlers and was second to s f barnes in the list of wicket takers
