life itself felt overwhelming and i had long considered myself a flawed individual i used to say being myself was hardwork still the strength of empathy and a desire for fairness which often accompanies adhd fueled my passion for politics and we all know where that led yes i m talking about jeremy corbyn s leadership one year later january 2024 i overcame my impostor syndrome a common struggle for those with adhd enough to approach my gp about my suspicions armed with the asrs checklist i had filled in and a detailed symptom list from childhood to the present day i requested an assessment to my relief i was referred to psychiatry uk for an nhs funded assessment highlighting the need to address the inadequate provision of adhd assessments within the nhs in house assessments often mean many years languishing on the waiting list i undertook numerous online questionnaires and my husband as someone who has known me very well for a long time was asked to add his thoughts about my symptoms via questionnaires also during the actual in person part of the assessment the psychiatrist delved into my life experiences mental health history and childhood his diagnosis on the 1st of september 2023 of combined adhd shed light on the unique blend of inattentive and hyperactive adhd characteristics i have always displayed without knowing they had anything to do with adhd medication specifically elvanse became an option and the difference it made was transformative stimulant medication which paradoxically calms the adhd mind offered me more focus and control over my thoughts it helped me organise tasks focus on conversations and reduces my usually constant fidgeting even my sleep pattern improved previously i d lie awake every night for hours with racing thoughts an experience that i assumed was universal but now know is related to adhd unfortunately a national shortage of elvanse led to a switch in medication to a short acting stimulant which has not been as effective due to the inconveniences of taking it 3 times daily leaving room for it to be missed or forgotten but it is still better than nothing adhd a condition of extremes leads to bouts of hyperfocus on topics of interest while making mundane tasks unbearable it s a common precursor to anxiety depression and even substance abuse studies have shown structural differences in the adhd brain emphasising the biological basis of this condition with a deficit in dopamine being the most commonly known and understood the notion that 40 of the prison population might have adhd and an execute due to the avoidance of boring and detailed admin work while some may view adhd as a superpower the prevalence of low self esteem anxiety and depression among undiagnosed individuals demonstrates the suffering that arises when support and validation are lacking the financal impact can be huge due to its often times negative impact on work as well as the often accompanying adhd tax caused by impulse shopping or the multitude of lost items we have to replace raising awareness particularly for women and girls who remain underdiagnosed is paramount only 0 5 of the population is diagnosed while 3 5 may have adhd assessments should be adequately funded and all bought in house the nhs is not saving money outsourcing their assessments and it s certainly not saving money on people with undiagnosed and untreated adhd when so many are struggling with their mental health which requires medication which doesn t always help because they are not treating the right condition that s what has inspired me to write this article and share my diagnosis publicly as awareness grows so does self recognition and the opportunity for life changing interventions accepting my adhd diagnosis has been a watershed moment in my life i am more compassionate toward myself past and present having moved beyond the self deprecating labels so commonly attributed to those of us with adhd i am grieving for what might have been had i discovered my adhd earlier in my life than 53 at the same time i am celebrating finding out at all when it s obvious to me now that my dad who died at 59 had adhd and never received any help or support with that the world isn t designed for those with adhd but understanding it has allowed me to start to live more authentically and i want that for all my fellow adhders adhd rather than being a character flaw is a neurological reality with growing awareness perhaps society can embrace neurodiversity more comprehensively ultimately offering support and acceptance to those who need it most unmasking adhd reveals not only our challenges but our strengths and it paves the way for a more inclusive world when i started to suspect i had adhd i made list of all my hobbies and compared it to my husband s list symptom list made to support referral request i discovered adhd can be associated with some sensory issues which made a lot of sense based on my own experiences i also had huge difficulty knowing my left from my right 70 of people with adhd have employment difficulties i am one of them after my referral for an assessment i kept suffering from imposter syndrome and was convinced i was just imagining all my lifetime of struggles and was just making excuses for my many character flaws a friend suggested i try to log things that happened bridging differences with simple acts of humanity i m going to start this article with a statement that might be controversial but shouldn t be racists are human beings who deserve to be looked at with empathy what do i mean by this exactly let s start by unpicking the term racist when we call someone a racist we are summarising someone s belief that one race is superior to others and the prejudice that stems from it aimed at those not part of that superior race however it might be more accurate to say that a person has racist views they are more than just their racism before i m accused of being a racist sympathiser i can say without any equivocation that i abhor racism a person with racist views is a person capable of inflicting great harm on other human beings not all of this will be in the form of physical violence some of it will be in the form of prejudice and discrimination but whatever form it takes that harm has devastating consequences and has to be resisted using any means at our disposal the issue i am exploring today is not a particularly comfortable one for people on the left who like me abhor racism slogans like bash the fash are born out of the understandable and justifiable angers socialists instinctively feel when their brothers and sisters are being targeted and scapegoated for no other reason than their race or skin colour anti facists have risked their lives on many occasions to protect the target of facist demonstrations and deserve our full respect for that i don t want to take anything away from those acts of heroism when violence is an imminent threat you do what you have to do to defend the potential targets of that violence what i m trying to look at today is another way of fighting facism a way that requires us to humanise those who dehumanise others i say it like this because the left does on occasion dehumanise racists let me give you an example during the recent racist riots i watched footage of someone who was part of a facist demonstration being struck on the head and in the groin by a brick a well known left wing commentator with a successful youtube channel laughed at the footage too bloody right i hear some of you say the idiot is reaping what he sowed and trust me i am not sitting on high righteously judging anyone who laughed too i get it however i didn t laugh and i didn t laugh because i didn t see a racist being struck on the head with a brick i saw a human being being hurt and my innate dislike of seeing other human beings come to harm kicked into gear and then all of a sudden i saw the child inside that man the child he had once been i saw him probably struggling at school maybe due to an undiagnosed neurodiversity such as dyslexia adhd or autism i saw his self esteem being slowly leeched from him this was possibly being compounded at home by parents who struggled to parent him adequately for a myriad of reasons including undiagnosed and therefore unsupported neuro diversity mental illness addiction poverty social isolation physical ill health etc now carrying around a painful feeling of inadequacy that child is a walking open wound begging to be healed sadly children in these situations are not taken under the wings of healthy mentally stable adults with a positive attitude and progressive politics they are much more likely to be swooped into the dark world of crime and facism they are easy prey for predators of all types criminal sexual and political farage is such a predator with his suave manner and easy answers a person who has carried a deep seated self hatred his whole life is relieved to finally turn that hatred outward no longer the pariah now part of a gang a team a political organisation who has figured out who the real pariahs are now you are just accepted for who you are because no one really cares who you are they don t care that you left school without many or any qualifications they don t care that you struggle to stay employed or live in a grotty bedsit they don t care that you drink too much in fact that s something to be applauded you are white and you re one of them you finally belong ok michelle nice psychological theorising i hear you say but what has this got to do with socialists who have a duty to defend the victims of racism we are political activists not therapists and that s a fair point to make we can t smoke bomb the next facist demo with some elixir of enlightenment that will remove all the horrible racist opinions in those hundreds and possibly thousands of heads i wish we could this is not about easy answers it s about holding the human being in mind as well as the persons beliefs it s about recognising that most of the people on that demo are not wealthy well educated men and women who have an inflated sense of their own worth and are exploiting the poor and ignorant to hate the wrong people they are the poor and ignorant they are me or my neurodiverse children in a parallel universe growing up with a different family and experiencing different life circumstances i have adhd only diagnosed last year at the age of 53 i went through school being labelled as lazy over sensitive or careless and had barriers put in my way if i even so much as thought i could achieve more because teachers had grown frustrated with me and didn t think i deserved to have chances my self esteem was so low and i could have been moulded into a racist if certain things in my life had gone differently despite growing up in a non religious family i turned to religion at 11 to find that sense of belonging and then in my mid teens i joined cnd and began to develop a deeper understanding of politics yes it s possible personality plays a role intelligence too maybe because i know i m reasonably intelligent however we know from stories about people who have held racist views and then left them behind due to an awakening bought about by conversations with friends romantic partners work colleagues and yes political activists that racism isn t in our dna it isn t who we are it s much more likely to be who we become if we don t like ourselves like the iconic anti vietnam war protesters who put flowers in the gun barrels of the military police guarding the pentagon in 1965 we have to find a way of killing hate with love because hate begets hate and the more we use slogans like bash the fash the more powerful these people feel and for people who have felt powerless all of their lives that s an intoxicating feeling do we want to fuel those new found feelings of power or do we want to redirect it do we want to feel good about ourselves as we shout abuse at the racists or do we want to win their hearts it s not dissimilar to the choice we face when we lock up convicted criminals these people have often been let down by schools parents and wider society they too are often filled with self loathing and that evolves into a callousness that allows them to inflict suffering on others through the crimes they commit they are of an age of criminal responsibility they should be held accountable the same way that someone who tries to hurt someone because of their skin colour should be held accountable that s not in question some have been exploited by the wealthy and the well educated some have been abused and used many will have undiagnosed neuro diverse conditions the joint inspectorate evidence review in 2021 estimated that up to half of the adult prison population is neurodivergent are these people criminals or are they people who have committed a crime should they be locked up in a 10 foot by 10 foot cell with a thin mattress one itchy blanket and a stinking hole in the floor and definitely no tv or game consoles should we shame them by shouting shitty crims in through the prison bars every few hours or should we take the time and care to use their time in prison to try to unpeel at least some of the layers that led to their criminal behaviour do we punish or rehabilitate setting the prisoner aside for a minute which is better for wider society and all future potential victims of crime of course people on a demo are not in the system we don t have the time or resources to diagnose the neurodivergent or the mentally ill we don t have therapist couches on standby with an army of caring empathic therapists ready to conduct a bit of cbt dbt counselling art therapy or whatever combination of psychological and emotional support this person needs to process a lifetime of trauma low self esteem and isolation a demo won t be the place to do this work yet even on a demo we can tweak our approach to douse the fire of racism rather than fuel it we can hold placards aimed at the other protesters they can bear slogans such as
