burden a writer need have no such ideals unless he makes them for himself and this one has quit right at the end he says something interesting he says that he seems to have had an unnatural gift for happiness now he realises that the the natural state of the sentient adult is a qualified un happiness but this wisdom has come late and hard for him because he has spent most of his adult life prey to what he now realises was an unnatural degree of happiness my own happiness in the past often approached such an ecstasy that i could not share it even with the person dearest to me but had to walk it away in quiet streets and lanes with only fragments of it to distil into little lines in books but i think that my happiness or talent for self delusion or what you will was an exception it s a very telling comment on his own character an unnatural gift for happiness and then goes on to make the association so many friends and critics and commentators did from that day to this that in some magic way fitzgerald s personality matched mimicked or echoed the spirit of the age it was not the natural thing but the unnatural unnatural as the boom and my recent experience parallels the wave of despair that swept the nation when the boom was over commentary at the end of reading these three little essays are we any closer to understanding what caused fitzgerald s crack up no not really he doesn t so much explain as describe and half the description is of his own puzzlement at its causes and do we understand how he got himself out of it no not really the second half of the final essay is pretty funny in its vehement satire in his insistence that he s going to become a cynical hard boiled tough guy but it fools no one and more to the point it s not a method anyone else suffering from depression could remotely learn from it s a kind of literary solution to the problem of the essays of the text he s created rather than any solution viable in real life andré le vot it was in the changed and this article is about that first wild wind of success and the delicious mist it brings with it it is a short and precious time for when the mist rises in a few weeks or a few months one finds that the very best is over how typical of fitzgerald with his sense of loss of failure of the wonderful times slipping through your fingers anyway it was the autumn of 1919 when he got a letter from a publisher saying his first novel had been accepted for publication i liked the detail that he d gotten a labouring job repairing car roofs at the northern pacific shops i ve had so many labouring jobs dustman postman factory worker warehouse operative lab cleaner prison orderly so many but the point of the account is describing his transition from amateur to professional as an amateur writing was something he did in his spare time the letter from the publisher transformed him in his own opinion into a professional and that meant suddenly he was on the alert for anything which could be turned to fiction everything became grist to the mill and he gives the example of a party he missed in order to write something and friends ringing up to tell him he missed the incident of an acquaintance who dressed up as a camel but went to the wrong party now he s a professional this is now longer a funny anecdote to share but material the metamorphosis of amateur into professional was taking place a sort of stitching together of your whole life into a pattern of work so that the end of one job is automatically the beginning of another that june i was an amateur in october when i strolled with a girl among the stones of a southern graveyard i was a professional and my enchantment with certain things that she felt and said was already paced by an anxiety to set them down in a story it was called the ice palace and it was published later so far so personal but then he does that thing he did so often of coining a phrase to describe the era of history his country was entering with the end of the winter set in another pleasant pumped dry period and while i took a little time off a fresh picture of life in america began to form before my eyes the uncertainties of 1919 were over there seemed little doubt about what was going to happen america was going on the greatest gaudiest spree in history and there was going to be plenty to tell about it the whole golden boom was in the air its splendid generosities its outrageous corruptions and the tortuous death struggle of the old america in prohibition isn t he brilliant at describing it eight years after it all crashed in tears he still conjures the magic of the roaring twenties and immediately after pinpoints his schtick his thing his obsession the theme he returns to over and over in all the novels and so many of the stories the sense of inevitable crash and collapse all the stories that came into my head had a touch of disaster in them the lovely young creatures in my novels went to ruin the diamond mountains of my short stories blew up my millionaires were as beautiful and damned as thomas hardy s peasants just as quickly and casually he knocks out another absolutely vital fact which is that he wasn t actually quite of the jazz era generation he was just a bit older then the really wild young things who dominated the decade for a couple of bewildering years he found himself at the centre of the decade s media circus but all the time felt just a little outside it all i was pretty sure living wasn t the reckless careless business these people thought this generation just younger than me for my point of vantage was the dividing line between the two generations and there i sat somewhat self consciously when my first big mail came in hundreds and hundreds of letters on a story about a girl who bobbed her hair it seemed rather absurd that they should come to me about it on the other hand for a shy man it was nice to be somebody except oneself again to be the author as one had been the lieutenant of course one wasn t really an author any more than one had been an army officer but nobody seemed to guess behind the false face he finds himself not only bombarded with fan mail but giving numerous interviews in which he said all kinds of foolish things came across as arrogant and boastful surprisingly maybe he devotes a page to describing how only a few weeks after this side had been published and he was being swept along on a wave of euphoria and publicity he was very upset when the faculty and alumni of his old university princeton turn on the book this was because princeton looms very large indeed in this side and the faculty didn t like either the publicity or their portrayal some fracas he was in got magnified by the press into an orgy and he was suspended from his club undergraduate life at princeton involved competition to be a member of various members only clubs the university magazine which his fictional hero amory blaine so badly wanted to write for wrote a negative review of his novel and the 23 year old suddenly felt rejected and deflated but this too was part of becoming a professional having to cope with the fact that lots of people simply won t like your stuff not everyone is going to love you you have to suck it up one gradually developed a protective hardness against both praise and blame too often people liked your things for the wrong reasons or people liked them whose dislike would be a compliment no decent career was ever founded on a public and one learned to go ahead without precedents and without fear so what about the theme of the essay what are the qualities of early success well if it comes very early you are likely to over attribute it to fate and destiny to believe the world has a special place for you premature success gives one an almost mystical conception of destiny as opposed to will power at its worst the napoleonic delusion the man who arrives young believes that he exercises his will because his star is shining the man who only asserts himself at thirty has a balanced idea of what will power and fate have each contributed the one who gets there at forty is liable to put the emphasis on will alone so early success is likely to give you delusions of power a napoleon complex but there are upsides too the compensation of a very early success is a conviction that life is a romantic matter in the best sense one stays young and so he ends this fantastically evocative little essay with a typical image one of the many images of romantic wonder which lace his stories and make them so wonderful to read in the mid twenties he went to live in the south of france and one evening was driving along the coast road with the lights of monte carlo twinkling in the distance and the view is so breath takingly beautiful that he has to stop the car and whisper ah me ah me it was not monte carlo i was looking at it was back into the mind of the young man with cardboard soles who had walked the streets of new york i was him again for an instant i had the good fortune to share his dreams i who had no more dreams of my own and there are still times when i creep up on him surprise him on an autumn morning in new york or a spring night in carolina when it is so quiet that you can hear a dog barking in the next county but never again as during that all too short period when he and i were one person when the fulfilled future and the wistful past were mingled in a single gorgeous moment when life was literally a dream typical fitzgerald combination of naive wide eyed wonder with bitter sweet notes of regret what an amazing piece the entire feel of the man in just six pages credit the collection the crack up with other pieces and stories by f scott fitzgerald was
