e i could sleep in longer when it only took me 10 minutes to drive from my driveway to the dell parking lot i m not sure how long it took me to notice but after a year or so of driving to the office i began to realize one morning that none of the cars i travelled with along the road looked familiar to me i began to take notice of the cars around me each day i left the house at the same time so it made sense to me that i should be seeing the same cars each day like i did when i was driving to the power plant even when i was paying attention to the cars i saw each morning after about a month i realized that i still didn t recognize any of them i thought about this further and realized that the number of cars we would pass on our way to the plant was a lot fewer than the cars i encountered on the road to the office it seemed like when i was waving at people on highway 177 we only encountered about 25 or so cars on my way to work i was traveling with several hundred cars when i encountered the cars on highway 177 in the morning it was pretty clear that they were all on their way to stillwater to go to work in the evening they were returning home when i was traveling to dell the cars i encountered were going to any number of destinations some would be going into austin to work others would be going to or from hutto taylor pflugerville georgetown cedar park or leander some might be traveling across town to work at apple others might be going to work at ibm some might be going to the university of texas others might be going to saint edwards university this was an entirely different scenario well it was only for 10 minutes each way besides when i arrived at work i entered a building that had 1 000 employees instead of a power plant with 124 employees dell had 30 000 employees when i first arrived dell s peak number of employees was in 2023 nine years after i left at 133 000 employees today they employ about 97 000 i decided after several months of trying that it was a lost cause to build a roadway community like we had in oklahoma i did however watch as the two lane highway between my house and the office turned into an eight lane toll road with two lane frontage roads on both sides i watched as the empty field at the corner of red bud and gattis school road turned into an albertson s with a strip mall then later into an h e b grocery store i watched how gas stations popped up alongside new apartment buildings unlike my drive in oklahoma where we watched over 20 years as the trees grew and the crops were harvested in round rock over the past 25 years the town grew from 70 000 people in 2001 to 142 000 today fields turned into neighborhoods roads turned into highways h e bs turned into h e b plus three miles from my house i can hop on a highway with an 80 mile an hour speed limit if i take it south 5 miles past the tesla factory it speeds up to 85 miles an hour what does a person do in this environment to build a community the catholic church where we went for 12 years went from about 3 000 families to 25 000 families that s families not individuals today their community became so big we moved to a smaller church in pflugerville i believe they only have 7 000 families currently to put this into perspective when i left oklahoma in 2001 the entire diocese of tulsa had 62 000 catholics today the austin diocese has about 725 000 catholics don t get me wrong i was able to make very good friends with coworkers and people at church over the years now that i am retired since march 2023 i still keep in touch with my friends since the power plant men have decided to host regular reunions of power plant retirees i have been attending those this has allowed me to reconnect with my friends from 25 years ago all old men david evans along with a lot of old power plant men now that i m retired i have a regular routine where i go and eat lunch at different restaurants each day of the week after two years now when i walk into those restaurants the people working there know me and greet me i say hello back to them and know a lot of them by their names a few weeks ago i walked into the culver s on highway 79 about 4 miles from my house neil and nikki said hi after i ordered my usual and i sat down neil who is an older gentleman came up to me and said hey kevin don t you come in here wearing a cannon beach tee shirt sometimes i told him i do wear a cannon beach tee shirt sometimes cannon beach is in oregon and i had bought a tee shirt when i visited there a few years ago then neil said that his daughter had told him that the movie goonies was filmed in cannon beach he had told his daughter that this customer kevin comes in wearing a cannon beach tee shirt sometimes he just thought he would tell me that it made me smile that neil wanted to share what his daughter had said about cannon beach oregon since he had seen me wearing a cannon beach tee shirt so after i finished my lunch and drove home i logged into amazon and ordered a cannon beach tee shirt i had it delivered to neil at culver s two days later i watched online as the amazon truck drove to the culver s parking lot and delivered the tee shirt it s crazy what you can do these days the cannon beach tee shirt i saw neil 5 days later when i returned to culvers when he saw me he pointed his finger at me and said you sent me that package didn t you at first i acted a little confused package yeah you sent it to me you must have he walked around the counter and showed me a picture his wife had taken of him wearing the shirt he said it fit him perfectly after i sat down to eat my lunch neil came over to my table to talk to me he asked me why i had sent him the shirt i told him i just wanted to put a smile on his face after office in the power plant shortly after i left after my first power plant job as a summer help in the maintenance shop in 1979 i returned to school where i declared my major at the university of missouri i had decided to work toward a bachelor of arts i had decided to obtain a degree in psychology three years later as i already had gone to my first year of college at oklahoma university before i arrived at the power plant i had my degree after working my fourth summer as a summer help i asked eldon waugh if i could stay and work at the plant as a janitor i figured with a major in psychology i would make an exceptional janitor i had worked as a night janitor when i was in high school at the hilton inn restaurant i had worked alone most of time during that job i had also worked as a janitor with pat braden during my time as a summer help when they needed help waxing floors over the weekends pat braden on the left with dick dale and mike gibbs after being a janitor for 6 months charles foster one of the foremen in the electric shop asked me if i ever considered being an electrician i had not he thought i would be a good electrician since i liked to clean things and electricians were always cleaning one thing or another so charles suggested that i take the correspondence courses offered by the company to learn all about electricity charles foster after i took the correspondence courses because online courses hadn t been invented in 1983 i also took a house wiring course at the indian meridian vo tech in stillwater while i was still taking that course i became an electrician in november 1983 an electrician bill rivers who was one of my three carpooling buddies see the post how many power plant men can you put in a 1982 honda civic started teaching me about the electronics that controlled the precipitators he suggested i take an electronics course so when i was done with the house wiring course i took that next when i completed that i realized that even though i had taken calculus in college i never fully understood it so i called up oklahoma university and asked them if i could take a correspondence course in calculus at first they were reluctant until i explained that i was just a working person at a power plant once they realized i wasn t just a student they bent over backwards to accommodate me they assigned a professor to me and sent me the large calculus book which i worked through during the next 6 months i keep mentioning correspondence courses let me explain to those who don t know a correspondence course is where you do your homework and you put it in an envelope and put it in your mailbox where it is sent to the school then eventually the teacher receives it and grades it then sends the graded material back to you in the mail this was the world before the internet i hadn t been in the electric shop very long when my second electrical foreman howard chumbley sent andy tubbs and me to oklahoma city to a course to learn how to troubleshoot a microprocessor motherboard what yeah this was in 1984 here lies howard chumbley i don t have a picture of howard we actually used a digital probe to determine which pins on the main processor were on and which were off we traced the logic across the motherboard from the cpu to the memory chips and the system control chips we weren t worried about graphics and sound because these early computers didn t hook up to a complicated monitor or sound device other than something that beeped at you we could follow the circuit to create a beep you can imagine my excitement andy tubbs my dad came home from work one day and showed me a book that came with his new ibm pc at work in 1982 it was called basic he was the first professor in the veterinary college at oklahoma state university with a pc he wanted to learn everything about it so he could write his books on the computer instead of the typewriter i thumbed through the basic programming book and realized immediately the potential of what i was seeing i wanted to learn to write programs for the pc i took his book and read it i didn t have a computer but that didn t matter i started buying the compute magazine each month it included basic computer code in the magazine to create different programs each month i would read through the code even though i didn t own a computer just to see how it was done it wouldn t be until december 1987 before i actually owned a personal computer i owned a sharp calculator that could be programmed in basic in 1984 i wrote a program called battleship and another called space program using the 4k that s 4 096 bytes of memory a sharp calculator like i used to program the battleship game actually mine was an el 5500ii on my honeymoon during early january 1986 while my new wife kelly and i were on a train travelling between london and edinburgh i was busy reading a thick magazine called byte that s how obsessed i was with computers i read every article in that magazine in 1989 my dad asked me if i would like to work toward a master in religious education degree from loyola university in new orleans with him i said yes the classes were held in tulsa each week with other educators in the evening it took us until may 1993 to obtain our degrees at this point i had a bachelor of arts in psychology and a master of theology in religious education mre from loyola i worked on a computer programming certification in the 1990s from the national radio institute nri just by the name you can imagine that this company no longer exists i mean radio repair used to be a thing the company would pay for education at this point so i was regularly taking courses at the vo tech during the nri certification i learned visual basic 3 c java and unix i was creating computer programs at work and getting myself into trouble regularly by 1997 see the post power plant birthday phantom that is when my wife kelly came home from school one evening she was going to oklahoma state university working to obtain a master in healthcare management a speaker in her class who owned a software company in stillwater explained the type of person he wanted to hire kelly said that he had described me perfectly she said you need to go back to school and get a computer science degree i considered this option for 5 maybe 6 seconds and replied ok at this time the electric company paid for 100 of the tuition and fees for an accredited school they also paid 75 of the books for the next 4 years i worked toward the degree in the business college at oklahoma state university called management of information systems mis while working this was a bachelor of science i graduated in may 2001 by that time i had the offer to go work for dell this was when ray eberle made his prediction we were sitting in the master print room working on making sap more usable he was working on bill of materials bom and i was working on task lists for all the jobs in the maintenance shop see the post how many different power plant man jobs ray eberle ray turned to me so i took his picture see he said he was going to make a prediction then he said i predict that within three years you will be going back to school it just seems to be how you are you won t be able to help yourself i thought no i m done no need to go back to school these are the abbreviations after my name now ba bs mre that s enough within 3 months i was gone i had left to work at dell when i arrived at dell i quickly learned that dell would only pay 3 000 00 per year toward continuing education that would not even pay for one class if i was trying to work toward a degree well that was a lot different than the electric company that had spent about 100 000 to educate me over the years after spending that money they their own set of training courses online you could take them whenever you wanted they also had required courses that an it person had to take every year these included classes on how to stay in compliance when dealing with other countries how to remain ethical there were some safety classes thrown in there also one good thing was that if you were sent to a course in order to do your job then the company paid for it i found a lot of opportunities to do that most of those were scheduled through the companies learning site on september 2 2003 two years and one week after i had been working
