st please look for the answer to your peafowl question before sending an ask or i will just link you again i love answering questions but many i get asked repeatedly despite the answer being readily available since it s come to light that they re going to be lowering support for tumblr i m letting you know that i exist on other social sites already as backups i will be on tumblr until the lights turn off but if things do go south here and the doors close these are the other places i can be found i intend to wait and see how it falls out and where the communities i m in go if anyhere or if tumblr just manages to survive i ll just keep being here until the end my other socials are below the cut keep reading tumblr 2 years ago with 364 notes iiixkitsunexiii kedreeva bug has been on eggie watch for the last 2 days since she started to drop her wings and raise her tail today was the day i fumbled my phone trying to get a video of her laying and grabbed this photo of her mid lay instead ignore the egg already in the nest that s an empty shell to show her the blankies are a nest but she successfully and quickly very little fuss compared to last year laid her eggie and drank a bunch of water and went back outside hopefully i will catch the rest of her eggs and she ll nest down again where i can be there for hatch day again i have secret plans to swap in an ev chick this year and have her raise her so i can have an obnoxious ev hen to match mantis we ll see if it works navigatorsnorth yay for eggy time is your plan to swap in ev eggs or am already hatched baby are evs feather sexable at hatch kedreeva a freshly hatched baby if i can the way i ve done the breedings this year earl x wendy heather i will get by phenotype blue males blue hens and ev hens so any chick that hatches ev will be a hen this means that if an ev hatches in another clutch i can yoink a baby and shove it under bug as long as it s baby enough and she doesn t have babies already i m hoping that she ll accept the adoptee it s trickier with peafowl than with chickens with chickens you shove almost anything under them when they re broody and as long as they don t suck and there are sometimes have that do and won t raise babies at all they ll just adopt it ducks will take other ducklings generally geese too peafowl are way pickier and many people aren t able to graft offspring like this at all however i ve generally had success with my birds and bug s mom took a few lateh hatch babies over the years and bug s sister is great about all babies belong to eris now but there s still not really a way to know for sure till it happens so fingers crossed i m lucky and skilled and if not i will take the baby back to the other hen and split a nest that hasn t hatched so bug can have a different baby from the egg so i have plans and backup plans iiixkitsunexiii you ve probably explained this before so i apologize if i just missed it but out of curiosity why do you do the baby swapping kedreeva i have it s because ev is an allele to purple so when paired the male offspring carry one of each gene they look so similar that most people aren t going to be able to tell the difference in the offspring and will sell one as the other i know this is going to happen at some point but i m also not going to be the one responsible for starting it since bug is purple and earl is het ev half their sons would be the compound het and i would have to cull which is not like the biggest deal in the world now that i have a butcher that will process extra males but i don t want to have to do that to bug s bio kids i also can t know what color will hatch from eggs bug sits on even if i gave her safe eggs she might not hatch an ev and then i will be raising more friendly birds i shouldn t be keeping because i will run out of space so i want to try to give her an ev hen because i know i want to keep at least 1 more ev hen possibly 2 source kedreeva replies peachicks 2026 the entire internet so shitty that the only reason to use it is because it s where all the people are and now they re getting rid of the people like i m straight up logging off and going to the library there s nothing on here anymore mumblesplash here s how to tell if an image is ai signs the person you re talking to is a bot how to tell if a song is ai generated ah but consider this i am shutting my laptop and walking outside jedusaur i saw a bsky post last year where someone said their grandma couldn t tell what was real on the internet anymore so she stopped using it and i really genuinely think the techbros currently ruining everything have never even considered that possibility their projections and pie charts and market share research and whatever simply do not take into account a scenario where people lose interest in being online like yeah we re pretty much all gonna keep using the internet to book travel and look up words and order pizza but in terms of how we spend our leisure time i m still extremely online but in the last few years i ve been learning candlemaking and carpentry and sewing and i was already spending a lot of time cooking and reading books and skating at the rink and hiking and an afternoon spent on any of those things always leaves me feeling better about myself than an afternoon spent doomscrolling i think my daily life is going to keep reflecting that more and more as the slop encroaches and it sounds like i m far from the only one feeling that way silver lining the everything i suppose source mumblesplash the only real reason online spaces are going to stick around is for communication because humans crave that and local communities can t always provide but hopefully that means online spaces without ai develop ai life bean bags swans birds good things 8 hours ago with 32 336 notes anonymous asked i joke a lot that my dog had a return policy in the contract with the breeder ie we could return her for a refund or replacement if she experienced some of a list of issues that a responsible breeder would health test for like hip elbow dysplasia or early cancer but to be honest i don t think i d trust a breeder who didn t have something like that in the contract for a dog since quail live for such a short period of time is it viable to health test and guarantee in an equivalent way or do issues tend to be discussed post mortem the short answer is no testing is not done no guarantees are rarely offered and no issues are not generally discussed post mortem the longer answer buckle up is that we re not just talking about two kinds of animals we re talking abut two completely different types of animal classes with completely different sets of expectations and purposes dogs are pets quail are small livestock raised for food they are also comparatively slow producing animals vs fast producing animals these two factors in combination are really important to understanding how each are dealt with most animals that are pet type animals are not hard culled if they get sick injured or have genetic health issues if a dog gets sick it goes to the vet if a dog gets injured if it s not something minor they can shrug off in a couple days they go to a vet because it s taboo to hard cull puppies and because they only in the care of a responsible breeder only produce a handful of pups a year tests have been developed to look for deleterious genes so they can avoid breeding dogs together that have those things and vaccines are pretty standard to avoid dogs getting common illnesses meds can be given liberally to treat things like parasites or illnesses that do pop up basically everything possible is done to avoid hard culling a companion animal instead animals that cannot or should not become breeding animals get pet homed and cared for as pets and responsible breeders will take back stock they ve bred rather than allow it to go to a shelter or be euthanized livestock are not the same and small animal food livestock are on the other side of the planet with food stock livestock a responsible breeder s job is to cull against defects if a quail here is hatched and something seems wrong with it in any way that quail is hard culled and either frozen for reptile feed given to bug mantis if it s small enough for them to eat or given to my local crows in tribute nothing leaves here or is bred here that isn t to the naked eye perfect depending on what is wrong there s a good chance i will also cull the parent stock that s part of why i track lineages there is also very little health testing available to birds there s pullorum testing which while a good precaution only really tests for 1 disease pullorum thyphoid that has all but been eradicated through the npip system which i test for and then there s tests which cost between 8 and 30 per bird to test stuff like low pathogenic ai and mycoplasma there are very few easily accessible vaccines for fowl you can get the marek s vaccine but it s leaky and means your flock is now closed to anyone that isn t marek s vaccinated which is not many people because most people know better some people live in places where stuff like the newcastle vaccine is prudent but that s not local to me mycoplasma technically has a vaccine but it s not one you can give at home so it d be a 70 vet bill just to walk in the door and that s if you can find an avian vet that will see livestock birds my town is 4k population and we have at least 3 cat dog vets in town that i can name off the top of my head the nearest avian vet that sees fowl is an hour away to put it very bluntly it s literally just not worth it for a bird that costs anywhere from 2 15 could i or anyone do all that testing and vaccinating and such yeah sure but a no one cares on the buying end and b no one is going to pay for it on the buying end no one is going to pay 300 for a bird that s health tested and vaccinated they would look at me like i d grown a second head if i asked them to a lady who has therapy quail she raised herself had a quail break a leg and wanted to get it amputated and came to ask if anyone else had ever done that and she was raked over the coals repeatedly for not just culling the animal on the spot partly because spending that kind of money on quail is incredibly rare but also legitimately because quail are ground birds that don t do well with less than 2 feet and shouldn t be subjected to that it s part of why livestock are not advisable to keep as pets until you get to the very large livestock such as horses which are big pets classed as livestock so they can zone stuff and have different rules about them not because most people are eating horse on top of the cost most medical interventions just straight up cannot be given to food producing animals because they aren t approved for human ingestion and the meds used to treat animals usually aren t the same as the ones treating humans they come with what is called lifetime withdrawal a withdrawal period is a period of time after giving a medication or other substance that science has researched and found the medication is present in the meat or eggs and so the animal cannot be processed for meat or have their eggs eaten during that time you literally just throw the eggs away they cannot be given back to the birds without reintroducing the med some meds like amprolium don t have a withdrawal period some meds like toltrazuril technically have been researched to have a withdraw...
