applications i wondered how they found out about that this was something new i thought this would be very neat our vp ben hasan our first meeting to discuss how we would do this was held across town in an office building that was close to michael dell s house compound in the room where we met there was one of those long wooden tables with fancy comfortable chairs you see in movies where all the executives or mob bosses are meeting to discuss important things it was all very fancy they gave us shirts to make it official because you know it s not official unless you have a shirt dell i t school volunteer we found out that there were two schools we were going to help one was the rich school on the southwest side of austin the other one was the poor high school just off of highway 290 east of i 35 it seemed that after teaching at the wealthier school we didn t deem it necessary to go back because the teachers there were pretty well versed in microsoft office apps the poorer school was quite different i remember when we first met with the people at the reagan high school which today is called northeast early college high school they were excited to have us teach the teachers they warned us that some of the teachers would be resistant to learn something new it was just the way it was we decided that we would focus on one application at a time first we would teach word then on a separate occasion we would teach excel and finally we would teach powerpoint word and excel were taught in a computer lab the teachers sat there like students as we walked around behind them helping them learn the different shortcuts and features of word and excel we taught them how to use mail merge so they could create one document in word and use excel to merge in the name of each of their students when it came to powerpoint i knew this was going to be a bit more challenging to some i wanted to teach the class using a projector since using powerpoint would be replacing the overhead projectors they were using with transparencies because of this we held that class in the high school library where they had a projector and screen i was the main teacher for powerpoint evidently word had spread at dell about my final powerpoint presentation at the power plant i don t know how they knew unless some maintenance supervisor jim something at the plant had called dell to complain about me sending copies of the presentation to the other plants after i left see the post power plant final presentation when the teachers were filing into the library one older man said i don t need to learn this i never have needed it and i don t need it now he sounded just like jasper christensen when i was giving him his 360 assessment what this teacher didn t know was that i had brought a secret weapon with me it was going to be so compelling that this teacher was going to be shocked into learning powerpoint before the class was over as i started the class i set my secret weapon down next to the projector and set it in motion then i began teaching all about how to make slides and use wordart and how to animate things so they would slide onto the slide from different directions i taught them how to copy slides and group objects on the slide together so you could move them around in a group as i was doing this my secret weapon was busy ramping up a surprise that would change everything i let the secret weapon continue working quietly then suddenly the grumpy old man that didn t want to be in the room yelled out hey how did you do that yep he had been shocked you see i had brought my daughter with me that was in the 7th grade at the time i had used her years earlier when i was teaching the switchman training classes at the power plant using powerpoint here is a picture of her in the switchman presentation elizabeth the switchman trainer in the switchman training i had short videos of elizabeth that would slide in and she would make comments about the material they were learning she had phrases that she would say like i know this is boring but you have to learn it and this will be on the test each time she showed up she brought life into the most boring topic power plant men were subjected to sitting in the high school library that day was my daughter creating all sorts of masterpieces in powerpoint she was creating animated images that would move around the slide things would come in and out the entire screen would change and then something else would happen all without her even touching the computer i had pulled elizabeth out of her middle school that day so that she could teach high school teachers the fine art of powerpoint presentations the old man was so impressed that he asked her show me how you do that so she walked him through step by step by the end of the class that grumpy old man was excited to go back to his office and start creating things that were going to impress his students one of the people that was teaching the teachers in word was jodi goike she was the admin for our vice president ben hasan jodi goike after we had spent a semester teaching the high school teachers i think we decided that we had just trained the trainers and the teachers that we had taught would teach the other teachers after all they are teachers jodi goike called me up and asked me if i could meet her at a local starbucks there was something she wanted to discuss with me i think she knew a little of my background that is that i used to work at a power plant and had changed careers to go into it jodi s boss ben hasan had suggested to her that since she was very smart that she should look into going to get some education and do something more fulfilling than being his admin she wanted to talk to me about it since i had done something similar a few years earlier i remember the subject of managing money came up in the conversation because i remember explaining to her the benefit of paying off a mortgage early by just increasing the monthly payment a little i think i had my financial calculator with me at the time my texas instrument baii financial calculator sometime after we talked she changed jobs at dell to become a training analyst i suppose our time training the teachers had made an effect on her as she was doing this job jodi went to austin community college and became certified as in interior design from there she went on to become a successful businessperson ben hasan must have some superpowers to be able to look at people and see their talents somehow he thought i would be good teaching adults he could tell by working with jodi that she had the potential to make a bigger difference in the world i have been quietly following her career and praying for her since that day we met at starbucks to discuss her future one more thing i want to mention about jodi if you go to her linkedin profile you will see in her featured section a powerpoint with slides showing examples of her interior designs i think it is great that even today she is using powerpoint to exhibit her talent now i want to go back to how i began this post at the beginning i talked about how i had applied for the new trainer job at our plant when i applied for that job i had just started going back to school at oklahoma state university to work toward a computer science degree i eventually ended up with a business degree called management of information systems mis degree that was one of the degrees that dell was looking for when they hired me i knew that if i had been hired as the trainer then i would have had to drop out of college the trainer was going to have to spend three months at each of the other power plants as they figured out how they were going to organize the training i had already planned on how i was going to create a computer application that we could use to train the employees with the help of the maintenance crews in the shop i was sort of relieved when i didn t get that job even though i thought it would have been a dream job during the next 3 years i watched as the company spent millions of dollars on a computer training application that i could have whipped up for them and that would have been a lot better it would have cost a lot less than it did since it would have just cost my salary they probably would have been able to sell that application to other power plants across the country so they wouldn t have to use the crumby one they bought that was created by people that didn t know anything about how a power plant worked the trainer job would report directly to the plant manager that meant that the trainer would be a member of the staff i also know why i didn t get the job toby o brien was in the room when it was discussed power plant engineer and good friend toby o brien toby told me that jim arnold wouldn t be able to stand kevin breazile being on the staff as a direct coworker of his did i ever mention that jim arnold had a sort of animosity toward me it might have something to do with the day that i told him you may be dumb but i m not that was after jim arnold who was the supervisor of engineers at the time told me that it didn t matter how much memory was in a pc it was only going to be able to use the first 640k i remember glancing over at toby when i said that and he was sinking down into his chair trying to become invisible anyway i can safely say that jim arnold was the reason that i didn t become the trainer instead i finished school and was hired by dell where i worked for 12 1 2 years then for general located the next stop is usually the control room where a clearance is requested so that the equipment can be properly locked out this will prevent someone from being killed inadvertently when an operator closes a breaker sending electricity into a motor while someone is holding the bare wires in their hands or they are holding a wrench on a coupling that suddenly begins to spin at 3 000 rpms a person performing maintenance on the equipment in a power plant is eager to lock out the equipment in order to protect themselves i wrote a power plant post about this power plant lock out tag out or just tag out a typical clearance tag our tags had the word clearance at the top besides taking out a clearance as an electrician we took extra steps to ensure our safety just in case someone inadvertently removed the hold tag and turned on the breaker we would physically remove the connection from the bottom of the breaker to the motor or circuit so that even when all the rules are broken we are protected this was a matter of life or death when i was going through the bootcamp at dell during the summer of 2001 we learned about the importance of change management whenever we made a change to a computer program in production we learned about the change control board and change windows moratoriums and deadlines we had to meet in order to go to the change control board meeting to throw a wrench into the process the following summer on july 30 2002 something known as sarbanes oxley sox came into effect that made it change management even more complicated after sox requirements developers were no longer allowed to have access to finance application code in production dell extended that to every production system because someone thought that was a good idea dell s change management was a little more involved than going to the shift supervisor s office and signing a form to clear the equipment that we would work on granted there were times when the shift supervisor wanted more control over when to request a clearance so they required a day or two notice before the operator would spend an extra 5 minutes to go downstairs to the swithgear or 15 minutes to go up to the coal yard to hang the hold tag on the breaker a picture of a clean switchgear this was usually ignored in those instances when the shift supervisor was the one that needed the equipment back online as soon as possible there was even that time when a step by step procedure was created in order to take out a clearance here is the process clearance procedures note that in the procedure above there are 13 steps that had to be performed before the step that says begin work this is what happens when everyone has too much time on their hands so they stretch out the process or there is a threat of a downsizing and you have to justify why you need so many operators this procedure could be ignored in an emergency so after this procedure came out just about everything became an emergency this is actually relevant to what happened at times when i was working at dell one thing to note about taking a clearance at the power plant is that the shift supervisor assumed you knew what you were doing they didn t generally question how you were going to fix whatever needed fixing it was our job to know and the shift supervisor s job to give us the safe environment to let us work on it when i first arrived at dell change management consisted of going into the change management application and filling out a change request i had to write a description of the change why it was needed how long would the application be taken out of service who would be doing the change when would the change begin when would the change end i had to verify that the change was within the designated change window for that particular application i had to indicate if this would affect any other applications i had to describe the backout plan ...
