me on the phone to ios 18 so it would support my apple watch we re glad that we made the move the display is larger and sharper if i m not near my iphone text messages show up on my apple watch the battery life seems longer while i don t need to worry about putting it on the charger every evening i m still doing so as part of my daily routine i don t miss that old home button at all navigation is much smoother without it it is easier to flip through multiple photos in a text message and the startup is faster there are a couple of minor downsides i lost a few apps that are no longer available in the app store but i didn t use them much and they were easily replaced for most apps the passwords carried over although for a few i had to re enter my login information the purchase process was enjoyable we had to wait a bit for a salesperson at the verizon store but once she showed up we had her full attention she got us the phones and accessories we wanted and she even transferred all our apps data settings and contacts to our new phones the one thing our salesperson failed to do was to offer us ac adapters for our usb c cables that would have been nice because with the iphone 15 apple provides the usb c cable but no ac adapter but i quickly addressed that issue with a couple of orders to amazon and ebay we re happy with our upgrades and i think we re good to go virtue i don t agree cheap and quality don t often sync up on the other hand martin mull in his parody of mid twentieth century middle class america a paler shade of white talks about the family who furnished its living room from sears paying full retail that s not my parents exactly but it comes close to the vibe i grew up with that too may not be the ideal approach when i lapse into cheapness i generally regret it case in point i recently wrote about getting a smart watch i m taking a telephone and zoom pulmonary rehab class and i need to count my steps each day a smart watch is easier to manage than keeping up with a pedometer i bought an off brand model from amazon for less than fifty dollars calibrating it against my oximeter it did a good job of measuring my pulse and oxygen what i didn t factor in was the fact that it was under counting my steps by twenty five to fifty percent that means that i m telling the pulmonary rehab folks that i m making less progress than i actually am so i bought an apple watch for just over four hundred dollars doing so meant that i had to upgrade my 2017 vintage iphone 8 to a new iphone 15 that s been a fun upgrade more on that later now i m getting a more accurate step count and it supports many of my iphone apps not only that if i m sitting at my computer or spend too long taking a nap it tells me to stand up all good stuff meanwhile terry took my original smart watch and calibrating it against her pedometer it s giving her more accurate readings than it gave me who knows so being cheap rarely works out i didn t buy the cheapest leave a comment the age of loneliness essays laura marris graywolf press august 6 2024 242 pages kindle edition 9 99 amazon paperback 15 99 i m always up for a good collection of essays and the age of loneliness did not disappoint laura marris writes about nature her significant other and her late father what i didn t see in the book was a lot of loneliness early in the book marris writes about tardigrades tiny creatures that have survived all five mass extinctions and have been sent into space i noted tardigrades played a role in a recent book i enjoyed alien earths which explores the possibility of life on planets beyond our solar system matt the guy that became marris s boyfriend did an art exhibit that involved a tardigrade marris writes about gps about the oxford junior dictionary dropping words to make way for new ones related to science and technology and about horseshoe crabs she has a lot to say about horseshoe crabs in fact they play a key role in the testing of medicines they are often harvested illegally and their future is precarious the author writes fondly of her father he was a british national and came to the united states in his role as a sociologist but he was a nature lover and taught marris about sea creatures and showing respect for them he was also an active bird watcher and marris describes learning about the avocation after his death from one of his friends her father once took a solo road trip from the west coast to the east coast to take a break from his wife fortunately they reconciled to which marris says she owes her existence marris includes a long essay about love canal including its history and the toxic mess it became informative but not the most enjoyable essay in the book american geography is not the author s strong point she writes about route 80 when it is in fact interstate 80 or i 80 she says that route 66 became i 40 it did not interstate 40 follows roughly the path of the old highway 66 but it is not the same and i 40 ends in barstow route 66 went all the way to santa monica lack of knowledge of the us highway system notwithstanding if you re in the market for an eminently readable essay collection pleasure choose courage become victory valarie kaur read by the author and harjit dolly kaur brar random house audio september 10 2024 14 hours and 28 minutes 19 69 for audible members more for nonmembers purchased with an audible credit if you have read valerie kaur s first book see no stranger and were expecting something similar in sage warrior adjust your expectations this is a very different book while see no stranger was mostly autobiography sage warrior delves into the sikh story in india the book has a structured format there are eleven sections each section has two chapters the first chapter is kaur s retelling of a portion of sikh history and legend kaur doesn t differentiate the second chapter recounts a trip kaur and her family made to india where they visited the places described in the narratives she ends the second chapter in each section with a guided meditation kaur has a couple of themes that run through the book one is that when we encounter a new individual who might be a rival or when we discover an aspect of ourselves with which we are uncomfortable we should respond you are a part of me i do not yet know the other is a carryover from see no stranger when we encounter darkness we should ask is this the darkness of the tomb or the darkness of the womb the author keeps us challenged she says that there are no monsters only people who are wounded perhaps that is true of the guy with the orange hair who is running for president again but i have trouble accepting it still kaur is a fighter for equality and for wiping away discrimination based on race class religion or gender in my mind i gave see no stranger a rating of nc 17 mostly because of sexual content and descriptions of intimate personal interactions sage warrior comes close to the same rating but due to the violence in the sikh tales in one chapter near the end of the book i skipped to the end because there was too much violence for my taste valarie kaur does a superb job of reading her own work as she did in see no stranger but i had trouble keeping straight all the characters in the sikh stories that might have been easier seeing the names on the printed page or e reader screen harjit kaur brar recites the punjab poetry and scripture in the original which kaur then renders in english given kaur s presentation skills however i would recommend the audiobook sage warrior is not what i was expecting but it offers insight into sikh tradition and philosophy as well as a presentation of kaur s revolutionary love philosophy living on earth posted september 24 2024 329 pages kindle edition 14 99 amazon hardcover 23 19 in his book other minds author peter godfrey smith writes about intelligence and consciousness particularly from the perspective of the octopus a book i very much enjoyed he also wrote metazoa animal life and the birth of the mind which i somehow missed when it appeared in 2020 smith considers living on earth the third book in the series although he makes clear that you don t need to have read the first two for this last to make sense smith writes about james lovelock s gaia hypothesis which posits that the earth is a living organism while smith does not fully support that approach he points out that while the temperature of the sun has varied the average temperature of earth has remained constant in a range to support life he writes about cause and effect smith notes that the purpose of a sponge drawing in and expelling water is to provide it with nourishment but that process also helps to filter seawater he writes about the difficulty in making distinctions smith notes that a coral polyp secretes a material that creates a matrix around it he asks whether this is a home for the animal or actually a part of the animal itself he also provides an interesting tidbit in the ocean animals have different body plans on land all animals are bilateral the author writes a lot about evolution for example how birds evolved from dinosaurs smith has an interesting take on taxonomy he writes on one side are horses deer dogs on the other primates with a collection of rodents and rabbits not the divisions i learned in high school biology smith writes about factory farms and animal experimentation sections i skimmed he asks whether we should manage predation in nature the author covers a lot of ground but i m not completed the greater part of my massive recipe project i had migrated from mastercook the desktop version of which is terrible to cook n which has a modern dynamic up to date user interface i had to do a lot of reformatting and restoring the chapters that were lost when i migrated from the late lamented living cookbook to mastercook but by that date i had completed migrating my primary poultry seafood beef pork cookbook that only left my much smaller vegetarian cookbook to reformat i had planned to make the updates over time but my mind doesn t work that way there was work to be done so i dove in and i forged on to complete the project i finished that task last friday the complete project cook n tells me took 194 days that s over six months but it s now done in going through the vegetarian cookbook i observed a few things first i was sometimes sloppy in my classification i found a recipe containing shrimp there fortunately it s easy to move recipes from one cookbook to another using cook n unlike mastercook then i was surprised at some of the recipes i had saved i found several recipes containing sweet potatoes i don t like sweet potatoes terry doesn t like sweet potatoes why did i save those then there were recipes containing eggplant i don t like eggplant either and i m not comfortable cooking it easy enough though to delete those recipes so now my project is complete and i only need to add new recipes and update existing ones as i prepare them and add ratings and comments now i need to restructure how i use my time great opportunity to do some writing of alexander the great michael scott abrams press 1st edition september 16 2010 314 pages kindle edition 9 99 purchased during a bookbub sale for 1 99 author michael scott writes that the least written about period of greek history is the time between the end of the peloponnesian war and the rise of philip of macedon and his son alexander the great this is no doubt the case and scott a popularizer of classical antiquity sets out to fill this gap he does a good job of doing so scott explains that sparta was in a position of strength after athens lost the peloponnesian war and it forced autocratic rule upon it athens eventually wrested back its democracy though in a rather clumsy and incompetent manner it was that assembly that condemned socrates to death the author writes about shifting alliances as sparta became weaker and thebes started recruiting allies to its cause there was a lot of duplicity diplomacy and war as city states and individuals changed sides it was in the environment of these city states falling into disarray that first philip and then alexander replaced local governments with rule from macedon in the north just as virgil was dante s guide through the inferno scott uses as his guide through the period the writer isocrates in four years as a classics major at pitzer college i don t recall ever reading a bit of isocrates but just as scott says my education in greek history ended with the end of the peloponnesian war scott uses isocrates s insight to provide some useful context for the period after the war if you re interested in this
