things but the pantone party that project run play holds every year might be my favorite favorite i have a hard time pin pointing why but maybe it s because solids are my jam maybe because having one color to sew with but complete creative freedom otherwise is actually an easy constraint without being limiting at all maybe it just makes me happy because i love color any way it shakes down here s my first set of outfits using the peach fuzz pantone color of the year as my inspiration cali fabrics sponsored these looks and there were plenty of options to choose from i think the seersucker shorts is the closest match to the color of the year and the rest of the fabrics built off of it we had warm enough weather for a few days that we could take pictures comfortably and these sets are so cute i can t wait for summer the shorts are a perfect fit i made no adjustments and with the woven or knit waistband options i know these will be a staple for my boys cali fabrics had several colors of this seersucker fabric and now i need them all for some summer sets the jacky v tee has the perfect v neck not too low and it s a nice design upgrade from a basic tee this pattern also has a color block option which is another upgrade the fabric is cotton spandex jersey the saltillo is the sweetest little suit and this floral print was just perfect with the peach shades in the other outfit the tis shoulders option is the cutest and makes fitting adjustments so easy so obsessed with how these turned out this is the beginning of the tour so make sure you re following project run play on all excited to be back sewing for a project run play mini season they selected 6 former contestants and paired us up for 3 weeks of head to head competition it s some fun camaraderie with a little bit of inspiration from wherever we can find it i love that pr p s goal is positive inspiration over competition and the sewing contest is just a reason to be creative and push myself i wondered if my girls were getting too old to be considered models for children s fashion but i was assured that they still count and we re all thrilled to be doing this together again sydney s burgundy dress is from a vintage cotton woven solid i collected from my local remnant shop faithful remnants if you re local the owner is a local gem and her shop is stocked with thousands of yards i can always find what i need but you get what you get in terms of amount this fabric was about 4 yards but narrower in width so i did have to plan carefully it s a beautiful earthy color perfectly capturing the vibe i was hoping for the bodice began from the timeless tunic pattern from patterns for pirates thoroughly modified with a gathered neckline bias bound openings fit tweaks and a cut out back with a bow at the neck two bodice muslins came first and then tweaks on the final version as well the waist band was inspired by patterns for pirates grace dress pattern and the skirt was self drafted high low with a high low ruffle also i made those as wide and as long as my remnant allowed but getting creative within constraint is always rewarding i added the elastic at the bottom of the triangle opening at the last minute picking out the topstitching to add it just to match the vibe of the inspiration better but it did pull the armscye in a bit my initial inspiration piece was the floral swimsuit it became a dress with a handkerchief hem plus ruffle for maia the fabric was found after a lengthy search and ended up coming from raspberry creek fabrics custom print shop i was able to scale it to match the look i was hoping for i initially found a woven that was perfect but after lots of mental gymnastics i decided i really did want to make a knit dress and not a woven the bodice began from the hepburn pattern from patterns for pirates again heavily modified fit was modified the flutter was self drafted neckline and armscye modified neckband added and the skirt is a self drafted gathered circle skirt cut into the handkerchief hem shape with attached ruffle the sleeve flutter is only a single not a double like the inspiration because my daughter is ruffle averse and one was pushing her limits sewing to match the taste of the person wearing it is important i used nearly all of the 4 yards of knit i purchased wow how fun please go vote for your favorite this week i love how mine turned out comment project run play is near and dear to my heart and i always love sewing along when they drop a new collaboration collection of patterns and sometimes fabric and digital files this time both put together a bunch of talented designers give them a theme add some sewists and bam a fun event that celebrates creativity in the world of children s fashion sewing and more this theme is under the sea and the colors are gorgeous i made quite a few of the patterns and i was dying to get to more but i couldn t do them all let me start with this gorgeous purple knit eyelet top it s the lagoon pattern and one of the reasons i love this designer audrey from pr p is that my teen can still fit because they go to size 16 there are also a lot of options and i took it a step farther and tweaked it yet some more i cut this halfway between the crop and shirt length and hemmed instead of cutting at the crop length and adding a waistband as designed easy tweak the bodice is also lined because of the fabric i used if i would have used a knit that didn t have holes i wouldn t have lined it can i just stare at those sleeves i love it next i made a super cute sibling set in a fun color theme these patterns are the lagoon this time in a dress sand surf boardshorts explorer raglan and two of the ocean friends plushies so adorable the plushies just took a little bit of woven fabric and it was fun to whip up these whimsical creatures everyone needs a stuffed axolotl the last pattern i made is the gorgeous calliandra dress this one does not have a million options but it doesn t need them it s so is my favorite party of the whole year i love a good theme and when it involves color fabric and patterns how could it get any better first up is the incomparable rimini romper it has so many options and i love the size range nb 16 i made a few tweaks to the pattern the biggest being i removed layers the bodice isn t lined i just used 3 8 elastic at a 1 1 ratio on the neck and arm openings and folded them under to finish the ruffle and tie are also one layer and hemmed i also skipped the pocket bag and just stitched the back of the pocket bag to the front of the pants i thought my tween would appreciate less bulk especially since it s made out of bullet knit which is already a little thicker it s such a statement in one bold color this is the wine bullet knit from knitfabric com who sponsored my makes next i used a burgundy cashmere sweater knit and the prettiest floral rib knit for a coordinating sister brother set the jacky v sweater has color block and fun pocket options but i thought a basic look was good for a nice shirt he can wear to dress up a little it matches perfectly with this large scale floral rib knit which i sewed into an indigo dress this pattern is also packed full of options and it s been a few years since i made one it was love once again i love the generous length on the skirt and the deep v neckline in the back pantone helps us celebrate the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up i have always been fascinated by how children see the world i wonder how they will do things before they ve been told how to do something i wonder how far their creativity will take them before the world shows them which box to fit in when i had to pick an art inspiration for project run play s latest collection project art studio i couldn t choose anything other than my kids and their affinity to create art we have a family culture of painting and any other creative pursuit we might be intrigued by but ever since my oldest was probably 2 or 3 we ve pulled out the paints often for them to make messes create something from the overflow of their soul picasso is a favorite of mine and it seems his outlook on creativity was the same i sewed several patterns from the new collection which has 13 whole patterns but i ll tell you about the nods to picasso before i share pattern details you will often see him pictured with a cardigan layered sweater or jacket so my first look includes the blank canvas cardigan over the easel tee his famous contribution cubism is represented in the contrasted black and white fragments in the checkerboard multi hue henley and the butterfly dress the same henley pattern is a nod to his line drawings between those inspirations and my kids i made things that suited each one s own preferences and style always letting them express themselves the blank canvas cardigan has the best oversized pockets and was an easy sew with no hemming i used a brushed ribbed sweater knit for maximum coziness one of her highest priorities and the easel tee has a curved hem in the back for a nice design detail it s a great basic in a fall color that she can layer easily the multi hue henley has so many options and the nicest placket i ve ever made the shirt and dress are made from bamboo spandex from raspberry creek fabric i skipped the placket on the dress and made the quickest twirly dress in butterflies in a color that she looks so good in the shirt has a nicely curved hem i skipped the side vents the pants are the 4 seasons joggers and i love the pocket it s a quick sew and i used clay french terry from raspberry creek fabric the fit on everything turned out great based on measurements all the other art inspiration blogs are fun to read so go check them out and get a few new again and this time the theme is travel i was excited to sew up a few of them and pick a location for inspiration let me back up a bit though we used the pantone nyfw spring summer colors for our color palate and to be honest this is where i started let me show you what i got this swim print is a gorgeous one from the fabric fairy it matched perfectly pale and basil exactly and the print felt very resort to me so i thought it was perfect for the travel theme i also got this solid red swim fabric from the fabric fairy i asked megan to let me know which was the closest to poinciana and i so appreciate that she s always willing to lend her expertise and match colors for me the crochet knit is a beautiful tie dye from pretty posh prints and it s exactly what you want to wear all summer long pretty lightweight and comfy after patterns and fabrics were selected then i decided on a location kaifeng china is wichita s sister city and we have a beautiful friendship garden designed as a tribute to kaifeng in our local botanical gardens what an amazing culmination of colors patterns and location inspiration the patterns i sewed are the rimini romper it comes with so many options but my daughter liked this style best a pants length version with pockets i sewed it out of swim fabric and i think i ve discovered my new favorite it is a sturdy comfortable piece and holds shape where it needs to i have forever been stuck trying to imagine sewing regular clothes out of swim fabric and i think i crossed that hurdle the saltillo swimsuit is classic in red i love the flounce that goes all the way around and there are multiple strap options since i was sewing swim from a new to me designer i m new to their swim patterns not others i chose the halter strap option for easier fitting tweaks but there are a lot of options including glamorous bows that my practical daughter did not want but i love how they look cancun is a super simple cover up i made it in between his and knee
